25.01.2022 Today is the anniversary of the death of William Thwaites, the person responsible for establishing our city’s world-class sewerage system. Born in 1853, William was the first engineer-in-chief for the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works. He passed away on this day 19 November in 1907. William’s descendants approached us asking for a contribution to repair the broken memorial over his gravesite in Melbourne General Cemetery, that had been damaged in a storm, and to c...ontribute to a plaque to recognise William’s contribution to the health of Melburnians. We were delighted to help out and the plaque commemorating William’s service and his legacy to the city is now in place. The entrance to the Western Treatment Plant at Werribee which he oversaw construction of as part of the sewerage system in the 1890s is now named William Thwaites Drive.

24.01.2022 Annulus billabong is getting a drink this month! It doesn't get the water it needs to be healthy, so we're giving it a helping hand. We are delivering water to this important billabong working with the Victorian Environmental Water Holder. Billabongs are important cultural, ecological and liveability features in our landscape and those along the Yarra River are generally former paths of the river. Many of Melbourne's billabongs are now more frequently dry due to lower river flows. With the changes to their wet/dry regime, these ecosystems are threatened, so it's important we work to improve the health of the Yarra River billabongs!

24.01.2022 Melbourne Water is planning to complete a proactive safety upgrade to Cardinia Reservoir in the summer of 2023/24. This is to ensure that the reservoir continues to comply with best practice dam safety management in line with national standards for large dams. To help inform the detailed design of the upgrade project, geotechnical investigations, involving drilling several boreholes, need to be undertaken on the dam embankments. In order to ensure public safety while these ...works occur, closure of the Cardinia Reservoir Park is required for five days, between Monday 14 December and Friday 18 December 2020. We thank the community for their patience and understanding while we complete these important works. For alternative walking and picnic locations in the area, we recommend visiting Parks Victoria, and for more information about the geotechnical investigations or the Cardinia Dam Safety Upgrade Project contact us via phone, email or your preferred social media channel: https://bit.ly/3l1nEK4 Cardinia Shire Council Yarra Ranges Council

23.01.2022 We are planning works to manage weeds and vegetation along a stretch of the Little Yarra River in Yarra Junction and we want to hear from you! We are targeting climbing and scrambling weeds such as blackberry, honeysuckle and ivy, as well as a range of larger woody weed species such as willows, holly, elms and sycamore maples, and we’ll also carry out minor revegetation to stabilise river banks and provide habitat for native animals. A trail proposal to include a new trail t...o link into the existing Warburton Rail Trail has reached concept design stage and we are commencing engagement with the local community. If you are a local landholder, community member, business owner, trail user or visitor to Yarra Junction, we want to hear your thoughts on the proposed trail, so we can further develop options and prepare Detailed Designs based on your feedback. 19.01.2022 Another revegetation project completed! Our South East NRM crews have successfully installed 4,800 indigenous plants along the boundary of the proposed Eastern Treatment Plant solar farm. These plants will create a screen barrier, protecting nearby road users from glare, while also providing great habitat for the abundant birdlife from nearby ETP, such as black shouldered kites, swamp harriers, nakeen kestrels, golden-headed cisticolas, grey fantails, superb fairy wrens, willie wagtails, black swans, white-faced heron and purple swamp hens all spotted during the planting!

19.01.2022 The Grasmere Creek Revitalisation project to realign and naturalise the straightened western branch of the creek has been many years in the making! It was a commemorative moment for project partners Parks Victoria, City of Casey and Melbourne Water to meet on site recently and see the waterway and wetlands planted out - just goes to show what persistence, determination and a good dose of vision can achieve. We look forward to seeing the roots take hold on these young plants and this new environmental and community asset thrive. A job well done, team!

16.01.2022 We're proud to support Reconciliation Australia and the 2021 National Reconciliation Week theme `More than a word'. Everyone has a role to play when it comes to reconciliation and taking action in making a difference. Making a difference is also something that drives our new Principal Aboriginal Engagement Advisor, Dean Heta. Born and raised on Wiradjuri country in Albury, Dean’s mother and grandmother - who was a Wiradjuri Elder from Narrandera - always instilled in him a ...strong sense of cultural pride and identity. Giving back to his community is at the heart of much of Dean’s work and he's passionate about sharing his strong sense of cultural pride and identity. "It’s a week where we get to showcase the positives and impact of our culture on wider communities, society, and across the nation. But I’m a big believer in not just celebrating our culture for just one week we should be celebrating and sharing stories of our first nation's culture and our shared history as Australians all year round." We're so proud to have Dean on board!
