14.01.2022 A testament to the timeless and global appeal of Rebetika. When Japanese people listen to rebetika, they often say that it is similar to Enka (, a Japanese traditional style ballad).

13.01.2022 The Melbourne Rebetiko Festival team want to thank everyone for making this year’s Festival a success. We want to let you, our audiences, musicians, volunteers, the Greek Community and our other partners, that we will be coming back in 2021. We are shifting the festival to a biennial. We will be able to curate a deeper and more diverse program that represents Rebetiko music from across the Mediterranean region, the Middle East, and the Hellenic Diaspora communities. 2021 i...s also a significant historical landmark marking the 200 years since the Greek War of Independence against Ottoman Rule. It is crucial in seeding the rise of Rebetiko as the war of liberation in all its bloody morphology took over 100 years to end. The final chapter being the horrific Population Exchanges between a new Greece and new Turkey that gave birth to Rebetiko. In order to meet our original vision of performance narratives that talk to Rebetiko’s social, political and cultural impact, we need time to reflect, develop more partnerships and curate effectively. We want to add, forums, discussions, workshops and performances across Melbourne in intimate and large venues. Putting on a Festival with limited resources and intense passion is what we do well. However, as lovers of the form, as professionals, we know that to build a Festival that is resilient, and one that has international impact we need more funding, more discussion, more partners and that takes time. When we have developed a program that we feel genuinely reflects the most current as well as most innovative and authentic forms of the art ranging from traditional, modern, contemporary, jazz, rap and even punk Rebetiko, we will let you know first. Rebetiko with love!

09.01.2022 Live at the 2019 Melbourne Rebetiko Festival! Mandolins of Smyrna Multi-instrumentalist, Paddy Montgomery along with award-winning musicians Thomas Kendall and Daniel Watkins breathe new life into the century old cherished songs of Smyrna (Izmir). The three musicians ironically, have strong backgrounds in American Old-Time and Bluegrass music, which heavily features the mandolin. As an instrument that can be found in nearly every pocket of the world, it is no surprise that i...t found its way into the Smyrneika and Rebetika music of Greece. A very unique aspect of these genres, is that the musicians played whatever instruments were at hand, wherever they were. Thus, finding mandolins, banjos and other instruments of the like was not uncommon. The repertoire will be predominantly instrumental, featuring old Zeibekika, Hasaposervika and Mpalous. This will be an inimitable performance.
