17.01.2022 Did you know that taking your little one outside and exposing them to sunlight actually helps with their sleep? Exposure to sunlight increases the release of the hormone, serotonin from the brain. In the dark, a chemical reaction takes place where the serotonin is actually converted to melatonin, which is the hormone responsible for helping your little one fall asleep and stay asleep. Of course this process is much more complicated, but the premise is... that by taking your baby outside in the morning, this will result in a boost to their serotonin which will inevitably help them to sleep more soundly when they are put to sleep in a dark room. Research has found that morning sun exposure in particular, results in melatonin production occurring earlier in the evening, leading to easier settling to sleep at bedtime. On the flip side, it’s important that sunlight doesn’t enter your child’s room TOO early in the morning as that will trigger their brains to stop producing melatonin and start releasing cortisol, the wakeful hormone. Installing black out blinds will ensure the room stays dark when when the sun begins to rise, so that your little one doesn’t wake prematurely, ready to start the day! Let me know in the comments below if this tip has helped your little one settle more quickly and easily at bedtime! https://www.sleepfoundation.org/bedroom-env/light-and-sleep See more

05.01.2022 R O U T I N E S Routines often get a bad rap as many new parents may worry that they’ll become ‘trapped’ and unable to leave the house! However implementing a routine can actually be quite the opposite! It can be hard not knowing from one day to the next what your child needs and when they need it. By establishing a routine, your baby learns to anticipate what is coming next, which they really thrive on. ... Routines also give parents some direction and a sense of control over how their day will run, making it much easier to make plans that fit with their baby’s schedule. But how do you even know where to start with a routine? When your baby is very new, the best thing you can start with is a simple bed time routine that prepares your baby for the longer stretch of sleep that follows e.g. bath, massage, feed, book/song, cuddles. From the day you bring your baby home from the hospital, you can follow your baby’s natural pattern of feed-play-sleep. Establishing a predictable series of events from the very beginning will help your baby to feel safe and secure and it also reinforces their natural circadian rhythms. Once your baby’s internal clock develops, days become a bit more predictable and your baby may start to wake up at around the same time each day. This might be a good time to decide to get your baby on a more consistent feed and sleep schedule. When establishing a routine with your little one, it’s important to take into account their awake windows, ensuring these are an age appropriate length. Also keep a watch on their tired signs too so you learn to put them down before they become overtired. There isn’t a one size fits all approach when it comes to routines for babies and a bit of trial and error can help you figure out what’s right for your baby. What do you love about routines?
