23.01.2022 Project Showcase: The Balmain House site, which is located on the north-eastern end of the Balmain peninsula, terraces down from the street to meet the harbour. It has extensive views over Goat Island towards the Harbour Bridge. The concept was to provide a process of discovery through the site. A discreet street entry connects into the original central hallway that offers glimpses of the view. The pavilion’s narrow plan provides access to the northern sun and excellent cross ventilation. It gains a sense of scale, filtered light and indoor/outdoor connection from the adjacent lawn and features eucalyptus. The strength and simplicity of the concrete form reflect against the warmth of the timber, the bark of the eucalypt tree, the sparkle of the water and grounds itself into the site against the ever-changing context of Sydney Harbour.
22.01.2022 Interesting article about the Australian Dream and how architecture needs to meet the changing dynamics of the new family groups.
19.01.2022 With a super tight budget and taking its cues from the existing barn, we love this award-winning country house
16.01.2022 Project Showcase: The original heritage-listed, semi-detached building in Kirribilli required modern solutions to continue to house a young, dynamic and expanding family. The site presented many difficulties including a lack of privacy from neighbouring apartment blocks, poor external connections and a lack of accommodation. Melocco and Moore’s solution was the addition of a new three-story zinc-topped contemporary tower sleeved into a portion of the rear garden. The result was a seamless, sophisticated home and a happy family.
14.01.2022 Project Showcase: The Roseville House project involved alterations and additions to a large Federation family home in a conservation zone. The new works included bedroom accommodation, living spaces, landscaping, pool, and car access. The existing street facade is retained and enhanced with a new modern colour scheme. The addition to the rear sits respectfully under the existing eave and cantilevers over the kitchen to reach into the garden. The outcome was a beautiful renovation to a heritage-listed building that allowed the family to enjoy the seamless indoor/outdoor spaces that are synonymous with an Australian summer.
03.01.2022 What happens when an architect designs his own house based in the inner west of Sydney? The project received an architectural commendation in the Marrickville Medal with the judges commenting that it was a bold contemporary infill, utilizing a traditional form within an eclectic historic context. Importantly the house works very well for a grown household of four with separate living areas and indoor/outdoor spaces.
