25.01.2022 A quick note regarding Paris-Roubaix. For the last 5 years I've worked with small group of people to organise a public screening the race at The Local Hotel in South Fremantle. Its a tradition I hope to continue. With the recent outbreak of the Coronavirus a lot of sporting events have been cancelled and its unclear if the race will still go ahead in 2020. The race is scheduled in just over 4 weeks from now. We'll make a decision closer to the date if we go ahead with a screening at the hotel.

25.01.2022 Please read our statement regarding changes to our workshop and precautions to reduce the spread of COVID-19. We will remain open, but we ask customers to consider the following before visiting the workshop.

25.01.2022 A behind the scenes report from the recent ETRTO & ISO meetings in Brussels regarding tyre and rim standards for bicycle wheels. The bike industry is a bit of a outlier in the broader tyre/wheel industry with a lack of consistent standard for tubeless tyres and rims. Full report in the link below

25.01.2022 A quick note that I am still open and will remain so unless circumstances change. I've made additional changes to my workshop. I'm asking customers not to enter the main workshop area which is partitioned. I'm leaving cleaned wheels (disinfected) in boxes available for collection at the entrance and most customers are doing payment by EFT. I am still accepting wheels for repair and service and will be wanting to keep meetings brief. All wheel build consultations will be done on the phone or email. Social distancing, as I understand it, doesn't mean giving up on cycling all together (indoors or outdoors). For many it will be a welcome relief to de-stress and get some endorphins flowing. Thinking of all those affected by these difficult times.

25.01.2022 Yes, we're back and very busy with a large number of repairs in the last two weeks. But we did manage to build some wheels. Here are some recent builds and rebuilds for Sue, Lee, Scott. Wade and Matthew.

24.01.2022 Please note that due to recent events I've changed my workshop hours. I'll now be open: Monday: 8am to 3pm Tuesday: 8am to 3pm Wednesday: 8am to 3pm Thursday: 9:00am to 7pm... Friday: 8am to 3pm The Covid19 crises has affected almost all people. across the world and it's impacts have been making tidal waves. So far, these changes have not significantly impacted my operations and I've been able to continue working as usual. However, broader changes have meant that my kids are now out of school and daycare, so I've needed to change my working hours. My business is running as a door service only. I look forward to welcoming customers back into the workshop when all of this passes. Stay safe. See more

24.01.2022 A quick note that I've had a large number of wheels come in for repairs, rebuilds, and servicing in the last week. I'm happy to take on further work, but please note that I am currently unable to start any new jobs until Monday 8 April.

24.01.2022 A quick note that we're open on Friday and Monday (8am to 3pm) over the Easter break, and regular workshop hours all of next week. Its probably not a great time to drop in for a chat, but if you need something fixed to keep your wheels spinning, get in touch and we'll see what we can do.

24.01.2022 A quick mention that I've changed my shop hours and will now be opening slightly later at 9:30am. No, I'm not being lazy! The timing means I can now do school drop-offs in the morning. I'll be closing at 5:30pm weekdays, and 9pm every Thursday night. Please note that on Thursday nights I keep my work schedule open for general wheel repairs and servicing. If you need something fixed in a hurry, that's the best time to see me.

23.01.2022 Preparing our spokes to build a wheel is not as simple as pulling them out of box. The process involves 4 stages: 1) measuring each wheel component and calcuating the correct spoke lengths; 2) cutting and threading (rolling) our spokes to exact lengths (to less than 0.5mm); 3) cleaning and priming the spoke threads; and 4) applying a teflon based thread selant to prevent disimilar metal corrosion and vibration loosening, then allowing it to cure. Of course none of this work can be seen in the finished product. "To be prepared is half the victory."

22.01.2022 The last few months have been extremely busy with growing demand for work involving repairing peoples wheels. However, we've also built and rebuilt a significant number of wheels. Here are some of them.

22.01.2022 Please note that I'll be closed for a short break from Friday 15 November to Wednesday 20 November. Still open to 9pm this evening! I will reopen on Thursday 21 November.

21.01.2022 Make sure you check out the Swansea bikes show in Fremantle this weekend.

20.01.2022 Its that time of year again! I'd like extend a warm welcome to our friends and customers to join us and watch Paris-Roubaix at The Local Hotel, South Freo, on Sunday 14 April.

20.01.2022 If you're not suffering from post-grandtour, post-AFL grandfinal, rugby world cup fatigue... we have another cycling race scheduled to watch live at The Local Hotel next Sunday evening 29 Sept. Join us for a beer and a meal from 7pm. The Yorkshire course should be a cracker!

20.01.2022 A quick note that we're open regular hours to 8pm this Thursday night. Closed Good Friday, Easter Monday, and ANZAC day public holidays.

19.01.2022 Recent builds for Tom, Rod, Roger and Steve. Please note that we will be open this Monday 24 December from 9am to 5pm. We'll then be closed for two weeks and reopen on Monday 7 Jan 2019. Wishing all of our customers a joyful Christmas break.

19.01.2022 Fifty-One. Its an important number in cycling folklore... and it also happens to be the number of jobs I currently have on my list. I'm now fully booked for builds and repairs for 2020 and I have started scheduling jobs for early January. For minor fixes I am still available on Thursday evenings from 5pm to 9pm for small repairs and general trouble shooting. I'll be closing at Christmas and then re-open on Monday 11 January.

19.01.2022 Learn to build your own wheels at our introduction to wheel building course. Registrations are now open at our two day course on Jan 9 & 10, 2020.

19.01.2022 For the last decade road cycling has been dominated by one size fits all approach to bicycle wheel sizes despite a number of known limitations. In the latest slowtwitch feature, Tech Editor Greg Kopecky puts the case forward that we will see a return to smaller wheel sizes in road and triathlon, but not as we knew it.

19.01.2022 While I would love to have the best of everything when it comes to workshop tools and equipment, the reality is I find myself incrementally chipping away when it comes too new tool purchases. My latest acquisition is a spoke tensiometer calibration jig designed by a fellow wheel builder, Black Cat Handcrafted wheels in Switzerland. This clever device allows me to test any spoke and come up with a unique tensiometer calibration chart for greater accurately with specified spoke... tensions. While my P & K Lie tensiometer does have its own test stick to check against the original factory calibration, it's associated spoke tension calibration charts are limited to only DT Swiss or Sapim spokes. The new tensiometer calibration jig is critical here in allowing me to test existing calibration charts and come up with unique calibration charts for many unknown spokes, including the proprietary spokes used in many popular pre-built wheelsets. I can also assist any builder or shop wanting to check that their tensiometer is reading accurately. This tool has been on my bucket list for some time and Im thrilled to finally have it in the workshop. See more

17.01.2022 I guess you could say our work is very eclectic. A gallery of some of the wheels we've build and rebuilt during March and April. .

16.01.2022 Recent builds and rebuilds for Nikki, Dan, Byrn, John, Steven, Anthony, and Jarred.

16.01.2022 Please note that from 1 July we’ll be increasing our build labour prices by 10% to $120 per wheel. This will not affect any quotes that we've prepared from before 1 July.

16.01.2022 Recent builds and rebuilds for Jo, Jo, Jochen, Daniel, Luke, Clive, Owen, Joe, Matt, Matt, Kurt, Adrian, Brett, Phillipp, Bryce, Stuart, and Stu.

15.01.2022 Recent builds and rebuild for Andrew, Ross, Tobi, Ian, Andrew, Frank, Mark, and Ian.

15.01.2022 A quick update from the workshop. I'm quite busy at the moment with a large number of wheel repairs, rebuilds, and eBike builds coming in. Bike shops are experiencing a mini-boom in these strange times with many people taking up cycling for their health. Hopefully this will be part of a long-term trend. Turnaround times for repairs are generally 1-2 weeks. If you need a wheel serviced/repaired in a hurry, I take bookings at least a week in advance and offer a loaner wheel service for many wheel sizes. Unfortunately, I've had some of jobs delayed recently due to issues with getting parts to WA. While most courier-freight companies are still achieving air-freight deliveries within 1-3 days, others especially road freight have become much-much slower. Photo includes my backpack on the floor, because it's 9pm and its time to go home.

15.01.2022 We've been pretty quiet on The Facebook but a lot is happening. To be honest, I don't really have the time to photograph custom wheels at the moment. One important big change is this. Our new Wheel Fanatyk Morizumi spoke cutting and threading machine. What's the change?... havent we had a Morzumi for the last 5 years? The change is our new machine is dedicated to 12g and 13g spokes which are specifically used for heavy duty cargo bikes and electric bikes. We now have the cap...acity to custom cut and thread almost any gauge of bicycle spoke in house (I'm not aware of aware anywhere else in Australia with this capacity). Covid lessons have taught us the importance of being more self sufficient and not being so dependant on just-in-time airfreight to complete our work. We are also optimistic about a future where eBikes become a bigger part of the transport mix in our daily travels. See more

15.01.2022 A quick update from the workshop. At the moment I am limiting my contact hours for consultations and minor repairs to Monday mornings and Thursday evenings (unless by appointment), to focus on progressing with my current backlog of wheel builds and repairs. I am very grateful to have a lot of work on at the moment. I hope you are keeping well.

14.01.2022 Recent builds for Steve, Tim, John, Grant, Romney, Graeme, David, David and David!

14.01.2022 Please note that I'll be closing early at 1pm today to attend my kids end of year school function. Back to normal hours on Monday. I'll be open right up until Christmas eve.

14.01.2022 Recent builds for Richard, Richard (again), and Alex.

13.01.2022 Tonight at The Local Hotel from 7pm in the Whiskey Bar.

13.01.2022 Recent builds for Gesine, Mike, Lee, Nicholas, Mark, David, Joey, John, Jerry, and Brett. Please note that my backlog of wheel builds, rebuilds and repairs is filling up before Christmas. Tuesday 10 December is the last day I can schedule any new jobs to be completed before the Christmas break.

13.01.2022 Please note that I'll have reduced workshop hours this coming week, due to moving house. My temporary workshop hours will be: Monday 9am to 5pm Tuesday 9am to 5pm Wednesday 9am to 8pm Thursday Closed... Friday Closed. See more

13.01.2022 Recent builds for Stuart, Scott, Duncan, Tobi, Fabrice, Todd, and Kurt.

13.01.2022 Recent builds for Jimmy, Keith, and Tony.

12.01.2022 January has almost gone in a flash. This has been a really busy month for me with the first introductory wheel building course, some sweet custom builds, and a lot of repairs... did I mention lots of repairs! Today I enjoyed a quiet public holiday Monday catching up on repairs and making a few workshop improvements. The nature of this industry is that you always want to be able to help customers right away, but when you're a one-man-band you can only spread yourself so thin. Some jobs have taken a lot longer that I would have hoped, but I'm trying to keep on top of it.

10.01.2022 Built up some very unusual wheels today. Beautiful wooden rims made (and still made) by Cerchio Ghilisallo in Legno, Italy. We call it nature's carbon fibre. These were laced to some vintage Fratelli Brivio (F.B.) hubs. They are part of a Gloria (Milano) Bicycle restoration project built around the unusal Campagnolo Cambio Corsa rod operated gear shifting system. Thanks to Stuart for allowing us to be part of this wonderful restoration project.

10.01.2022 Building a workshop is comparable to painting the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It's a job you can never really finish, but you have to do it anyway. Recently I spent a number of nights reorgansing my 'service' workbench tool drawers with a special foam called Kaizen foam. The word 'kaizen' is Japanese for 'continuous improvement' and is a popular business management philosophy. The foam is designed to allow for tailored tool organisation to improve access to tools and general workflow. So far the results have been fantastic. I'm already noticing improved speeds in which I can finish jobs, without having to sacrifice quality or cut corners.

09.01.2022 While most people would be aware that I build a lot of wheels, fewer people may know that for every new wheel I build, I’ll repair 3-4 others. Having built and repaired many thousands of wheels I am in good position to do this work. My large inventory of wheel components and specialist tools means that I'm able to fix most things without needing to make a special orders with a supplier. It feels like the right thing to do for our customers, and for society in general. More re...pairs, less waste please! However a problem with this work is that there is no such thing as a standard wheel service or a standard repair job. Many wheels, including proprietary wheels have become increasingly complex to fix. The amount of time it takes to complete a wheel repair can vary massively from one job to another. Often wheels get brought in because of one specific issue (wheel is out of true), however there are multiple things that need to be addressed for the wheel to be in good condition (see the list below an example). Rather than have a fixed fee for say wheel truing, I'm proposing a different approach with a with a minimum service fee of $50 and maximum service fee of $100 per wheel (not including the cost of any additional components). If you have any thoughts or opinions regarding this approach, please feel free to make a comment below. ----- EXAMPLES OF WHEEL SERVICES AND REPAIRS Wheel Truing Minor wheel truing corrections Major wheel truing (including tensioning, dishing and balancing) Major wheel truing with spoke and nipple replacement Hub Servicing General hub cleaning and lubrication Minor hub service including bearing preload adjustment Major hub overhaul including bearing replacement Freehub body servicing and overhauls Hub and freehub body troubleshooting and diagnostics Cleaning Rim, hub and spoke cleaning and inspection for wear and damage Cassette removal, cleaning and installation Rotor removal, cleaning and installation Removing debris from inside the rim cavity Tubeless tyre removal and sealant cleanup Tyre and rim maintenance Removal of glass from tyres and inspection Rim tape removal and installation Tubeless tyre and rimtape setup and trouble shooting General repairs and service Loosening and replacing seized components Thread repair including axle and rotor mounts Sourcing brand specific replacement parts and components to complete the repair

09.01.2022 A quick mention that I'll be changing my workshop hours to 'by appointment only' on Mondays and Tuesdays from this week onwards. This is a trial so I'll see how it goes. The precarious nature of time management in my work is finding a balance between being available for customers and having uninterrupted periods of time on the tools. I'm sure not the only one who experiences this challenge. It was far less complicated when I opened my workshop in 2015. https://melodywheels.com.au/contact/

09.01.2022 A quick heads up. I've had an unprecedented number of wheel repairs come in during August. A significant number of the apparently minor jobs have escalated into full wheel rebuilds and as a consequence my backlog of builds and repairs has blown out. I try very hard to get all repairs completed within a 1-2 week time period but I've been struggling to achieve this. My apologies for the delay. I hope to be back on track soon.

08.01.2022 First day back in the workshop for the new year (& the new decade)! A couple of things to mention. I'm currently backed up with wheel repairs. Wait times for wheel repairs are at more than two weeks, so its very difficult for me to fit in any further pre-Tour Down Under repairs or services. l wont be available this Thursday and Friday during the day as I'm teaching a wheel building course. I'll still be available Thursday evening from 5 to 9pm - only for minor repairs/fixes and consultations. Lastly, most people are aware of the current Bushfire Crisis in Australia. This month I'll be donating $50 from every wheel built to the Red Cross disaster relief and recovery fund. I encourage everyone to think about what they can do to support the bushfire appeal. https://www.smh.com.au//here-s-how-you-can-help-australia-

06.01.2022 From Kerry at kLite.com.au.

06.01.2022 Please note that we will be closed today and reopen Monday.

05.01.2022 A quick note that I am currently fully booked for the month of October. For the last two months I've been working 5 nights a week trying to keep my job schedule under control. However its only blown out further since then. I am generally in a good place, happy, healthy, am very grateful to have a lot of work. However I can't do any more than what is already on the books. I am still happy to meet to discuss future custom builds, but I can't squeeze in any more urgent repair jobs and be fair to the people who are already waiting. Thanks for you patience.

04.01.2022 So we've been a little quiet on the Facebook but lots of things have been happening! I'm excited to have Patrick from BikeWise joining us in our bicycle themed co-working space. I used to work with Patrick teaching cycling education programs when I lived in Sydney. He'll be running more cycling education courses including bike mechanics once he is setup. We also have new neighbours at 4 Pritchard St with Sophie and her team at Alf the Label moving in next door. You'll never have seen so many vibrant colours in an industrial backlot in O'Connor. Its's a really welcome change. I'm loving being part of such a great community of small businesses.

04.01.2022 Recent builds and rebuilds for Darren, Jerry, John, Justin, Stuart, Andre, Toby, Chad, Greg, and Lawrence.

03.01.2022 Please note that I'll be running the 2 day Introduction Wheel Building course on 9 & 10 January, 2020. This will be a pilot of a new course with a new curriculum within the 2 day intensive format. Places are limited to 6 participants with 2 instructors. It you can't make it to this course, don't worry. I'll be running several more wheel building courses throughout 2020. For more details go to: https://melodywheels.com.au/wheel-building-course/

03.01.2022 Please note that I'll be closed this Monday due to sickness. I've taken the Covid test as a precaution. I'll be back soon.

03.01.2022 This coming Thursday night is the Queen Stage of this years Tour de France. The race will be screening again from 7pm in the Whisky Bar @The Local Hotel, South Fremantle.

03.01.2022 Recent builds (and rebuilds) for Mitch, Peter, Tim, Gerry, Bryan, and Mark. Please note that I'll be closing on Tuesday 24 Dec at 5:30pm. I'll be reopening on Monday 6 Jan. Wishing you all a safe and happy Christmas holiday break.

02.01.2022 3 years ago on this date I was featured in an article on CyclingTips about wheel builders and their tools. At the time I'd only been at the O'Connor workshop a couple of months and I'd forgotten how sparse everything was. Today I share the workshop with two other businesses. There is an internal partition and almost every bit of floorspace and wall space has been occupied. I'm sure there is a law that describes the process of accumulating things. Where did all this stuff come from? I still love working in this space. https://cyclingtips.com//a-look-at-the-tools-professional/

02.01.2022 Recent builds for Andrew, Damon, Ryan, Chris, Marty, Greg, Clive, and Philip.

02.01.2022 I posted this earlier in the week, but in case you missed it (its only 37mins long!), this was interview I did with Cody Osborne of the Bicycle Media podcast.

01.01.2022 An interesting week of builds with a carbon CX tubular wheelset, classic alloy road, loaded touring bike wheelset, 29er+ wheelset, and gravel dynamo wheel.... plus some rebuilds we forgot to take photos of. Variety is the spice of life! Recent builds for Teneal, Tobi, Neil, Andrew, Kieron.

01.01.2022 Calvin and Truman on form.

01.01.2022 Recent builds for John, Chris, Aidan, Greg, Peter, and Mark.

01.01.2022 There are a lot of misunderstandings about the amount of work involved in professional wheel repairs. I hope this makes it more clear.

01.01.2022 A quick mention that I'll be closed for a short break from 8 - 16 July for some family time and to make some workshop improvements. The regular programming will return shortly.
