24.01.2022 Is Gluten Free the healthy option??...

22.01.2022 Monday Myth #3 "Doing Ab Exercises Will Give You a Flat Belly." I started my health & fitness career as an Aerobic Instructor in 1995. Back when 'Bums n Tums' or 'Butt n Thigh' toning classes were popular. The reason being most ladies still thought spot reduction worked....If spot reduction worked we would all have slim toned jaw lines from talking, or at least I would!! Spot reduction is a thing of the past. It has been scientifically proven time & again to not be true.... Whilst it's currently on trend to have a toned, slim waistline, we all do come in different shapes and sizes & I'm quite accepting of that. However carrying extra body fat around your middle may have health implications such as higher risk for heart disease & type 2 diabetes. So my concern isn't with the aesthetic but more-so a healthy body. Yes, ab exercises do 'tone' your abs, but for most of us, our abs are hidden with an outside layer of body fat so ab exercises won't give you the results you're looking for. If you would like less body fat around your middle, then rather than just ab exercises, consider how to reduce your body fat as a whole....improving your nutrition including portion sizes, & increasing your regular cardio exercise & weight training regime are all part of a healthy lifestyle.

22.01.2022 Happy Sunday!! Great day to get off your butt and enjoy some outdoor activities!!

20.01.2022 Merry Christmas!! Hoping your day has been filled with love, laughter and fun. Thank you for your support and encouragement this year, we're already planning what's in store for next year!!

20.01.2022 How long since you have taken time for things that light you up? How often do you prioritise your health & wellbeing? How often do you plan your day to fit in a workout?... How often do you do something that is only for you? How often do you avoid looking at yourself in the mirror? How long since you've gone shopping and purchased clothing that is exciting, different and makes you feel fabulous rather than something that's 'serviceable' and goes with every other plain piece of clothing in your cupboard? Little by little it's easy to slip into the trap of running around after everybody else, forgetting how important you are. Until one day you wake up and realise this wasn't how you imagined your life to be, and you have no idea what happened. The good news is that it begins with you. It begins with realising that this is where you are right now, and that you're ready to create change in your life. It begins with realising that it is not selfish to put yourself first, that you are capable of caring for others as well as yourself. You don't have to be the one that always misses out. It begins with one simple realisation that you are special, unique and totally worth even 10 minutes of your day doing something that lights you up It begins with taking one small step - What are you going to do today just for YOU?

19.01.2022 Many people say they are too old, have too many injuries or don't have enough time to exercise..... This amazing lady is in her 70's she's fit, active and prioritises time for her weekly training session, and has done for many years even though she has a few pre-existing health conditions. From what this lady tells me, she's found exercise has enabled her to do things easier with much less pain which is why she ensures she does not skip her training sessions. She enjoys a b...ody that allows her to do the things she loves. Chicken the Cat loves to join in too

17.01.2022 Today was spent cleaning the studio ready to begin training tomorrow Looking forward to seeing everyone again this week, welcoming new faces and designing new programs for you this year. I feel privileged that you choose to share your journey and stories with me

17.01.2022 As the days become longer and the school holidays progress, you may be spending more time enjoying the outdoors. Take a moment today to fully appreciate all the the places your body takes you and all lovely experiences your body provides for you. Your body is an amazing gift!!

16.01.2022 When life is sweet, say thank you and celebrate. When life is bitter, say thank you and grow. Shauna Niequist As 2021 rolls in tonight it is time to reflect on 2020. This year was full of surprises, twists, curves, and challenges. It granted us the opportunity to think outside the box, be brave enough to test new ideas and provided many chances to grow and to become more resilient.... This year has brought opportunities to move into online training, launch a new training service Strong Stable Seat for equestrians including an online membership, complete the Franklin Method Equestrian Ball Certification, and almost complete Equestrian Australia Intro Level Coach certification (stay tuned, this will be completed shortly!). Through all of this I have still managed to continue fulltime study towards Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science, which currently I am halfway through completing and somehow through all of this have still maintained great results. Without the support of you, our valued clients and friends this year could have been much more challenging. Thank you for understanding and acceptance of our business changes as we re-structured to stay abreast in this ever-changing climate. We feel so very privileged and blessed to have you entrust us to share your life’s journey this year more than any year. There has been so many stories and learnings this year as we learned how to add resilience and flexibility with health and fitness. For now, I only have gratitude for 2020 as the many learnings have allowed us to dig deep, discover new places within ourselves and grow into an improved version ready to welcome 2021. Happy New Year!!

16.01.2022 There is nothing wrong about being inspired by others. On the other hand, comparing your results to someone else's results will only lead to you feeling not good enough. Remember your journey has been created just for you. It's personalised and will not ever be the same as someone elses.... Keep focused on your journey, enjoy the ride and the results!!

16.01.2022 Monday Myth #2 "If You Don't Feel Sore After a Workout, You Didn't Work Hard Enough." Don't judge the effectiveness of your workout by how sore you are the next day. Soreness & workout intensity are sometimes connected, but don't always have to go hand in hand. ... In consideration of the general population (not specific athlete conditioning), if you're too sore to exercise & spend 3 or 4 days on the couch recovering post workout then you probably won't receive the results you desire. When writing an exercise program, frequency, intensity & recovery are just as important as the exercises themselves. Getting the balance right ensures you will hit the spot. If you're new to exercise, or just getting back into it, you'll receive benefits faster by doing a few exercises daily & steadily building up allowing your body to adapt over a few weeks. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying getting sore is a bad thing, but there's a time & a place. I love a solid hard core smash fest leaving my muscles feeling wasted & staggering around the next day - makes me feel alive! And if it's a new exercise, expect to be sore. BUT the older I get the more I realise recovery is important. If I've put that much stress on my muscles, then I need to also give my body a good solid recovery session. An effective training session & program is one that allows consistent progression including overload but still enables you to train as frequently as you need to reach your goals.

16.01.2022 Monday Myth #4 "Swimming is a Great Weight Loss Activity" Whilst swimming is fabulous for increasing lung capacity, toning & even stress relief, it's not the best exercise for weight loss. The buoyancy of the water supports the body which means you're not working as hard compared to walking, cycling, cross training, running etc. Furthermore land based exercise sessions burn more calories compared to aqua exercise sessions. ... Now before you throw in the towel & jump out of the pool....there is a time & place for aqua activities!! Swimming or pool exercise is a fabulous recovery day workout, it's gentle on your joints & provides good variety to any exercise program. During the hot summer months, a pool workout is definitely better than no workout. For others who are elderly, or have knee, hip, back issues then possibly aqua exercises are a good place for you to start. We all need to exercise, & for some of us the pool allows a more gentle form of exercise especially in consideration to taking weight off joints, enabling exercise to take place.

14.01.2022 It's the weekend!!! Admittedly most of my weekend will be spent preparing for my uni exams, however I've still allocated time each afternoon to be active outside. I'm horse riding and cycling today, horse riding and running tomorrow. What do you have planned this weekend to be outdoors and active??

13.01.2022 Checkout these healthy looking sugar free wheat free treats....are they as good as they sound??

03.01.2022 If you've decided that diets aren't for you, and you're looking for a program that includes a supportive community to actually change what's not working in your life then Boot the Bad Habits begins this week! Head on over to register or risk missing out!!

03.01.2022 #repost this was in my memories today, however it's a great reminder!! How old are your shoes?? Inadvertently I ended up jogging in my old 'horse paddock ' shoes & quickly realised once again how bad it is for your body to be exercising in worn out shoes. My hips & knees were not happy!!... I keep my new shoes for running, usually after 4-6months they are still in good condition, but the sole is showing too much wear for a running shoe, so then I wear them to the gym. After that, the shoes are relegated to the horse paddock where they get dirty Without correct support you could end up with ankle, knee, back, hip pain, shin splints and more. I know quality exercise shoes are expensive, but an injury costs a whole lot more. Budget for a minimum of 2 pairs of quality shoes each year...your health & happiness is worth it!! #tip if you have a pair of shoes that you love, keep an eye out for when they are in sale so you've always got a pair ready to go!!

01.01.2022 Concerning truth about the fitness industry. I’ve worked in the Fitness Industry since 1996 that’s 24yrs! During this time, the fitness industry has evolved into a billion $$ industry where I’ve witnessed many changes both good and bad. ... The current trend where people are seeking healthier lifestyles is encouraging, however most consumers do not realise the limited education of those working within the industry. It is possible to complete a personal trainer’s qualification online, submit video assessments and not have any real mentoring. Now, when we consider a training complication such as a back injury could be lifechanging, I find this concerning. I have worked as a trainer and assessor, teaching Cert 3 & 4 in Fitness so I can honestly vouch for the low level of knowledge and lack of mentoring of those entering the industry. Even a hairdresser is required to complete a 3yr apprenticeship with face to face mentoring this whole time. In addition, once the training is completed, there is no actual requirement for the personal trainer to continue updating their skills. I am registered with Fitness Australia who do require 20 continuing education points every 2 yrs, however many trainers choose not to pay the fees necessary to either attend courses to upskill or to register. The benefits of Fitness Australia for you, the consumer is that you can easily see how each trainer values continually learning and growing their knowledge base. For instance, if you have a look at my registration, I have accumulated 66 points when I only need 20! If you're interested, you can check out my registration. https://fitness.org.au/direct/reps/melinda-behrens/1/024786 This is an ongoing topic of contention I understand many trainers simply can’t afford the costs of continually upskilling, especially after we were all shut down this year and still operate under restrictions. However, currently the industry is going through a change, and as a consumer, and someone paying for a service you could help transform this industry for the better. What are your thoughts?
