20.01.2022 **This post contains photos of wounds** Yesterday we had the very handsome boy Chronos in for surgery on a mysterious lump that had appeared recently on his side. The lump was quite large, but was caused by something very small and seemingly innocent... a grass seed! ... During our warmer months, we see so many dogs that have grass seeds imbedded in their paws, ears, skin and anywhere you can think of! They attach with small spikes on walks through long grass and with their nasty pointed tips, can be a big pain! Grass seeds can also track under the skin, which can make finding them slightly more difficult. This one had already tracked quite far. It's important to check our doggies after each walk and give them a good brush down (with our hands and a brush) to ensure they don't have any grass seeds stuck to them, which could work themselves into the skin and cause pain and possible surgery to extract them. Also check cats who like to be outside. Keep an eye out for any redness and swelling on the skin of your pets. Be aware if they are shaking their head, or rubbing their ears or eyes. Any sneezing, coughing, or chewing at their feet. These all could be indications a grass seed has been picked up and is working its way in to do damage. We hope Chronos is recovering well today, he is such a good boy!
