17.01.2022 In our recent Active Ageing Survey, community members aged 45+ said the biggest barriers to regular exercise were pain and not having time. Our Healthy Melville team put together the following tips and information for managing these barriers. Pain ... Pain whether before, during and/or after exercise is as good a reason as any not to exercise, but in many instances, appropriate activities and exercises can help decrease pain in the long run. Be self-aware of what causes pain and when you have pain and check with your GP or physiotherapist to find exercises that are suitable for you. Time Below are some suggestions to help incorporate exercise into your busy day: Try to incorporate exercise into daily life. For example, get off the bus or train one stop earlier, park the car further away than you would normally or take the stairs instead of the lift. Take a brisk 15 minute walk at lunchtime or try and break exercise sessions into smaller block (e.g. 3 x 10-15 minutes) to fit into your day Involve your family! For example, instead of watching TV together, play cricket in your backyard or park, go to the local swimming pool or take a walk together. Select activities that require minimal time, such as walking, jogging or stair climbing.

02.01.2022 Do you remember the Walk for reconciliation across Sydney Harbour Bridge on 28 May 2000, or did you participate in the walk in Perth later that same year? The Bridge Walk was a public expression of support for meaningful reconciliation between Australia’s Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. When combined with other similar events taking place around this same time, collectively they represented the biggest demonstration of public support for a cause that had taken place ...in Australia at that point in history. 250,000 people turned out in support, with a steady stream of supporters making their way across the bridge over a 6 hour period. During National Reconciliation Australia Week this year, a number of walks are taking place around Perth in order to reflect both on how far we’ve come as a society, and simultaneously how far we have to go in reconciling our history of dispossession. Join with your community at our Nyin, Ni, Koorliny event this coming Sunday, 30 May: www.melvillecity.com.au/nrw To find out more about the 2000: Walk for Reconciliation, check out the National Museum of Australia defining moment: https://bit.ly/3ysyaC5 Photographer C.Moore Hardy, courtesy City of Sydney Archives.
