24.01.2022 Breathing is something we do without thinking, all day long. Because it's largely automatic, many of us don't realise that our way of breathing might not be the best. With repeated stress and poor posture, we can end up with a "sub-optimal" shallow breathing pattern that actually contributes to more stress and tension in the body's system! Shallow breathing that over-activates the muscles of the shoulders and neck (called accessory muscles of breathing) can actually cause wea...r and tear, pain and strain. A better breathing pattern to develop is diaphragmatic breathing - where the main movement and expansion are led by the diaphragm and you will see LOWER ribs and abdomen expand instead of upper ribs and chest as we see in shallow breathing. Tips for identifying and correcting your breathing pattern: To identify the pattern - put one hand on belly, the other on chest. As you take a breath, notice which hand moves first. If it's your chest, chances are you might have a shallow breathing pattern. To change the pattern - put your hands on your back and feel your lower ribs as you breath. Try to breathe in a way that the lower ribs are expanding rather than the chest? Sit back against a chair and put breath into your mid-lower back, see if you can feel it pressing against the chair. Inhale a good sized breath Exhale out ALL the breath Repeat a few times during the day - setting an alarm to remind you can be super helpful!

24.01.2022 Environment also matters in healing. Within all the challenges that COVID-19 has presented to our business, one upside was the chance to give the clinic a little "zjhuzj". We love helping you feel more comfortable in your bodies and in the environment around you. Hope it helps! :)... Love, health and service. 22.01.2022 The new challenges of working from home have been popping up quite a bit in our treatment rooms recently. . We thought we'd put together a quick list of some of the major challenges and some strategies for dealing with them. . 21.01.2022 One of the reasons we work in teams. Professional development and skill sharing are an important part of our job. Skill sharing days are important to us to be able to collaborate, share our knowledge, support one another...and even have fun!... Do you work in a team? What benefits do you get from that?

21.01.2022 I don't think this news will come as much of a surprise - but we've made the decision to delay the commencement of Phase 5 by at least another fortnight. Phase ...5 will see the removal of the 2 square metre capacity rule and the 50 per cent capacity limit for our major venues. But given we have already come so far as a State there is just no need to risk everything for the sake of two weeks. We are closely monitoring the situation in Victoria and New South Wales in relation to our decisions here. With that in mind, and in line with health advice, we will be delaying the introduction of Phase 5 until at least Saturday, August 15. This is a tentative date only, we will provide clarity on whether it will proceed in advance of that date. We are already able to enjoy significantly reduced restrictions and we're making the most of our freedoms. A recent ANZ survey showed Perth is the most confident city in the nation and we must keep it that way. So far, it appears that our measures to stop the spread of COVID-19 from reaching Western Australia from overseas, Victoria or New South Wales appear to be working, but we have to remain cautious and vigilant. So let's keep up our efforts, be sensible, keep up good hygiene, physical distance between others where possible and stay home if unwell. Lets work together to keep our community safe.

20.01.2022 I find over and over the truth in the fact that the most powerful acts are often the smallest ones taken right here right now with the people around us.

20.01.2022 It was a touching moment for me. At our admin staff meeting last week, one of the receptionists asked her colleague what made her sooo passionate about Melville Osteopathy. She replied: "Nothing else had made a difference or really helped me until I started coming here. No matter whom I saw, I always felt better, it's helped me so much, I used to be a very different person".... It's a stressful world out there. When we care enough to show up, to dedicate time to learn, study and to help each other - it DOES make a difference. I love being reminded of that.

16.01.2022 Persistent pain is something we work with A LOT as manual therapists. If you or someone you know has persistent pain than you know - its challenging and it's complex. The reasons why someone may experience persistent pain (defined as lasting longer than 3 months) are complex and varied and each person is different. ... As we learn more and more about human systems - biological, psychological and social, professionals in the health arena are becoming more and more aware of the complexities of working with a person with persistent pain. THIS IS GOOD NEWS. It means our tool kits for helping to reduce the suffering caused by chronic pain are getting larger. July 27 - August 2 is Australia's National Pain week. During this week access to professional minds and the experiences of other persistent pain sufferers will be promoted. There are ways to work with persistent pain to reduce it's impact on stopping you from living a rich full life. There are no "one size fit's all" solutions but getting educated about pain and the methods available is a great first step. Our team is also - as ever - here to help when needed. xo The M.O. 16.01.2022 One of the themes we saw emerging from the national pain survey was the need for education. So we prepared a little resource list - this one to help those with chronic pain or friends and family supporting them. A few key organisations and support resources. We hope you find it helpful! Have a beautiful weekend dear friends!

12.01.2022 3.2 Million Australians have experienced Chronic Pain That's 12.5% of the population - a pretty big number. This week - National Pain Week - is designed to raise awareness of the needs and challenges of those among us living with Chronic Pain Conditions. ... Today's video from Chronic Pain Australia kicks off National Pain week looking at some of the data gathered from the 2020 National Pain Survey. Answers to the 2020 National Pain survey indicate we still have a ways to go in reducing stigma and increasing understanding. We frequently find listening and education are good places to start. If you or someone you know deals with Chronic Pain, there are new resources coming out this week to help us better understand and manage chronic pain - together. Stay tuned. The M.O. Team x

11.01.2022 Perks of the job - Baby Cuddles! A while back we did a little bit of a business audit. We asked ourselves some of those bigger questions - who are we, what do we stand for, what do we value.... We already knew but it felt really good to put it down clearly on paper. One stand out - family. In whatever shape it comes. To our deep delight we treat many members of the same family - the little cutie featured here is Carlo - son of our our lovely receptionist Mel who has also been a loyal patient for many years. We also work hard to create a family atmosphere for ourselves at the clinic. It's a beautiful thing to know there are people around you can count on. Who else has got family that extends beyond blood relatives!? <3

11.01.2022 Osteopath Dr Bianca Bedin outlines a few tips for how Osteopaths can help you get back to sport after suffering pain or injuries in sport. After a forced holiday from many of our normal sporting activities (thanks COVID), we might be finding ourselves jumping back in at full speed and pulling up a little bit sore. Sometimes this could be as simple as DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) or something troubling like a sporting injury. Often sports injuries occur by direct im...pact, overuse or trauma to a certain area of the body. A chronic injury may be caused by overusing the same muscle groups whereas an acute injury is something sudden like a sprained ankle. Sometimes poor technique, management or structural imbalances can contribute to certain sporting injuries. As osteopaths we are able to assist in the diagnosis of the sporting injuries through a thorough assessment of the muscles, joints, ligaments and bone. After a diagnosis is made we can assist with treatment including; massage, inhibition, articulation and manipulation. We can also work with the lymphatic system and aid in the reduction of swelling. Finally we can also support you in developing a Management and Injury Prevention plan which is also an important part in helping you return to sport. 10.01.2022 GO CATS!! Yep we are all a long way away from the footy fever over in the east, and we are all feeling it, especially this year with no opportunity to travel back, however we thought it was important to acknowledge a couple of things. Yes, we are incredibly grateful to all be able to do our jobs at Melville Osteopathy, with relative ease at the moment (due to being in Stage 4), however there might be something you do not realise about our team.. almost half of us are actually... originally from Victoria - (Allanna, Bianca, Holly, Martine, and Ellen) hence the keen following of AFL ) So while we may all have to watch the big final from afar this weekend, here's hoping we can have a date sometime soon to be able to see our families near and far! Happy Grand Final weekend all and GO CATS!!

10.01.2022 Massage Preference: Firm or Gentle? :)Massage Preference: Firm or Gentle? :)

09.01.2022 Dr Holly Pilkington - Osteopath - worked in a podiatry focussed footware store before she joined the MO team. She became particularly interested in treating lower limb conditions. Here she shares with some information about PLANTAR FASCIITIS. Plantar fasciitis (PF) is a condition commonly seen in clinic. PF is an inflammation of the plantar fascia, which is a band like ligament that runs from the heel to the ball of the foot. People typically have some of the following sympt...oms: Sharp heel pain, or arch/sole pain between the big toe and heel, typically it is pretty ouchy to the touch! Generally PF is at its worst in the morning, when you take your first few steps or after youve been sitting or lying down for some time. Pain usually eases once you warm up and get going over the course of the day, but often worsens again in the evening especially if you've been on your feet! During a consult, our Osteopaths will typically assess your gait (how you are walking), foot, ankle and pelvic mechanics. Once we have a clear picture on what is going on, we will then treat using a range of techniques such as soft tissue, joint articulation, stretching and manipulation where required. We will also discuss a treatment plan together, involving home exercises and stretches. SOME HOME TIPS: REST if possible, give your feet some love and try and reduce the amount of time you are standing on them. Wear supportive footwear Self-massage by rolling your foot over a tennis ball or spikey ball Lastly: Stretch those calves! - Place your toes on a step or pedestal - Perform a heel raise by coming up onto your toes - Slowly lower your heel until you feel a stretch in your calf muscles, repeat this movement 12 times before resting and completing 2 more sets. It is recommended this exercise is done every second day. PF can be a tricky one to resolve, however understanding the right type of rehab and management plays an invaluable role in the outcome. . . . #painfree #painrelief #pain #plantarfasciitis #osteopath #osteopathy #melvilleosteopathy #rehabilitation

08.01.2022 Many of our patients like to know about natural approaches to healing...so do we! . Turmeric - and more specifically, it's active ingredient curcumin, has been shown in studies to exhibit anti-inflammatory properties. . This means it may be a helpful part of a health regime to address pain and chronic diseases and has been used as a treatment in Ayurvedic medicine (the sister health science to yoga) for thousands of years.... . But simply adding a bit of dried turmeric to your curry every few weeks probably won't quite cut it. Doses vary and it's always wise to consult health professionals when considering changing your diet or taking supplements. . Cristina Galvez is our resident naturopath who is always here and available to consult on any questions you might have about supporting your health or healing with diet and supplements (link to our website in bio)...... . . . #health #naturalhealth #nature #tumeric #naturopathy #osteopath #osteopathy #melvilleosteopathy #healing #inflammation #wellness #nourishyourself #healthybodyhealthymind See more

08.01.2022 #compassion There is powerful evidence that compassion is good for your health... . Scientists have shown that showing yourself compassion can actually reduce your experience of physical symptoms of bad health, injury or pain.... . They have also shown that if you actively practice self compassion, you are more likely to engage in health promoting behaviours. . It has interesting implications for the attitude you bring to starting a new fitness plan or making some changes in your diet. Frequently we can be quite punitive or shaming of ourselves - and focus on the negative consequences of NOT taking any action (undeniably important). . However, the motivation and results stack better if you bring a positive and compassionate attitude towards it. . We believe the same applies in our relationships with patients. When we bring compassion to our relationships we can better support our patients in working towards the best possible outcomes. . How might you show yourself some compassion and make a positive change today? . In health and service. . x.o. The Melville Osteopathy Team See more

07.01.2022 **We are here for you** We know change is hard. Sometimes after an injury or the decision to finally deal with that niggling pain you are faced with that knowledge - at least for a while - "I am going to have do things differently". This can be scary as doing something new is stepping into the unknown. Change is hard but if the person helping you doesn't understand you, it can make it even harder.... One of our key values at Melville Osteopathy is collaboration. We work WITH our patients to understand the needs and challenges they face in dealing with injuries, managing pain or undertaking a lifestyle change. We even added a little extra time to our consultation times to make sure you get heard when you are here with us. 03.01.2022 Osteopath Holly Pilkington on jaw pain and tension and how an Osteopathy may help....:) We use our jaws a lot talking, eating, drinking, clenching our teeth when stressed! So, it is not surprising that a lot of us can suffer from jaw pain from time to time. Jaw pain can occur with or without locking and clicking of the jaw and may be accompanied by headaches and neck pain. Problems with the jaw or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can often arise from everyday activities, trau...ma (such as hitting your chin during a fall), clenching when sleeping, neck dysfunction or from dental work. Luckily your osteopaths are here to help manage TMJ dysfunction. Osteopathic treatment of jaw pain depends on the cause of the pain. Your osteopath will determine the cause of pain through an assessment of your TMJ, neck, back and shoulders and questioning of occupation, sleeping habits and stress levels (just to name a few). From there an individual treatment plan will be put in place to help manage your pain, osteopathic treatment may involve joint mobilisation, soft tissue massage and treatment of the neck, shoulders or any other contributing regions in the body! Other advice may be given such as strengthening exercises, stretching, stress management, mindfulness or referral to a dentist; all depending on your individual needs! If youre experiencing symptoms of TMJ dysfunction, pain or are catching yourself clenching your jaw, reach out and see for yourself if your osteopath can help.

02.01.2022 #family I had some grateful moments during lockdown thanks to my team. One of my colleagues sent me clips of her daughter's home made productions of instructional yoga videos....
