25.01.2022 Hello! Welcome and thanks for visiting my page! My name is Crystal Ballard and I am the owner/operator here at Memphis Park Equestrian Services. Over the years Memphis Park has evolved from me being a rider/competitor in Dressage, showing and when I was younger Eventing and mounted games, to then a stud standing 2 stallions, breeding and showing Australian Stock Horses and now as a coach and Equine Bodyworker and in the background we are developing a small equestrian centre w...Continue reading

22.01.2022 I thought this was well thought out particularly for those who agist and may need to self isolate https://thehorse.com//are-your-horses-ready-for-you-to-b/

22.01.2022 Anyone who has set up a horse property knows how much thought (& expense) goes into planning the layout and how to prioritise as what to do first. So its very exciting times when the roadbase starts getting delivered to create the hard standing/loafing and what will be shelter areas for your 2/3 horse and 4/6 horse set ups as well as roadbase down for shelters in the 4 private paddocks.

21.01.2022 Repost from Ritter Dressage A fantastic FREE offer whilst you might have some extra time Hi Everyone! I know it's a challenging time for so many of you. I know, because I chat with many of you on a regular basis. Some of you are dealing with being sick or caring for others who are sick. Some of you are worried and anxious. Some of you are frustrated because you are on Lockdown and can't ride your horse. Some of you are going stir-crazy.... I can't make all of that go away. But I do have something for you. We are starting a new 5-Part Series on Monday called, "5 Ways to Improve Your Riding (even when you cant ride)". We are going to talk with Catherine McCrum about things you can do OFF of the horse to improve your time ON the horse. So if you are unable to ride right now for reasons of Lockdown/Quarantine, safety, or any other reason... or even if you ARE able to ride but you would like to use the extra time you have right now to focus on improving your seat and your riding... we hope this series will help. Meet us on the Ritter Dressage page every day this week for a new topic to inspire and motivate you right now. The schedule is below. Click on the event links to find out the time in your timezone. 20.01.2022 REPOST from Tamarack Hill Farm I couldnt agree more! There is no need for gadgets once you learn how to train properly When trainers don't actually know how to train, a common next step is to pull out the hardware,... Draw reins, bitting rigs, other leverage devices, sharp bits, all aimed at forcing the horse to submit. There is a saying about such devices---"The only trainers who are competent enough to use them are competent enough to not need them." So that's what I think when someone argues for their use. Not that some won't try---- (And then, of course, there is drugging, an entire subject in and of itself---)

17.01.2022 After I dont know how many months it was great to spend some time today working with my own horses and I think they enjoyed it as much as me! Albeit a nice brush and then some gentle therapeutic inhand walking exercises lengthening and shortening the walk, gentle changes of direction through large circles, softly backing up and two times each direction walking over the curved raised poles

16.01.2022 A great explanation for any rider http://effectiveequestrian.blog/dressage-riders-training-p/

16.01.2022 It is so good to look out the front windows and see these two right by the studio! Another 4 paddocks fenced, YAY!!! When we purchased the property 2 years ago it was a blank canvas split into 3 paddocks. Now we have 17 paddocks to rotate and more fencing still to come.

16.01.2022 So with everything going on in the world in relation to COVID-19 we have been closely monitoring guidelines provided by the prime minister and the premier. I am awaiting details if I will be able to travel to Gold Coast for work and will update once confirmed Memphis Park Equestrian Services will continue to operate coaching and Agistment (due to now being 5 months pregnant I am not doing any Equine Bodywork until after bubs has arrived) as we operate outside in open air and... are able to easily follow social distancing guidelines as well as implementing extra hygiene practices (hand washing) As always safety is top priority so to protect the health and well-being of my family, my clients and your families, and to reduce the risk of transmission. - I ask that anyone who has travelled overseas or interstate in the last 14 days or who is feeling unwell with cold or flu like symptoms please do not come / rebook at a later stage - If you have been in direct contact with a confirmed COVID-19 please self isolate and do not come - Please follow the government guidelines by staying the recommended 1.5 - 2m distance apart no physical contact, no hugging, no shaking hands and the like - Please wash hands regularly (I will have handwash available and ask that you wash your hands at minimum on arrival and before you leave and any time in between if you have coughed, sneezed or touched your face. - If you need to cough or sneeze please do this into your elbow. - Payment as usual via electronic funds transfer or I can process card payment via square ( I also have alcohol wipes to clean cards/phone). Thank you & take care

13.01.2022 Knowledge is power! You should know what type of bit you use and why https://www.facebook.com/151508624864219/posts/3370398619641854/

12.01.2022 What would you choose and why? For me it would be 5,7 and 10 or maybe 1, 5 and 7 A naturally good moving horse is a great foundation to training however I would prefer a well conformed sound horse over movement... A horse that looks a million dollars on a hay diet is always going to be a happy horse with good gut health and cheap to feed with a mineral mix to balance diet A smart and trainable horse is very important as I want them to be able to think for themselves and stay out of trouble (I like horses in paddocks to be horses) and I also like a horse that I can develop a relationship with and we can work together A horse that doesnt require a vet hopefully means its sound but also means I have more money to spend on preventative maintenance, training and feed etc

12.01.2022 A great relationship between horse and rider https://www.facebook.com/stockmanschallenge/videos/242181652956139/

12.01.2022 It’s not just fat riders that cause discomfort to their horses.... When I am coaching I am often working with riders to become more at one with their horses rather than going against them or forcing them into fake frame. When we work with the biomechanics of both horse and rider it becomes a much more effortless ride and the horse can find its natural balance and therefore beauty without causing pain.

11.01.2022 So very true! Repost from Inverness Performance Horses In my opinion, when you think about an elite human athlete, its critical that half of their training is mental based. They learn how to empty their mind, keep focused and stay relaxed before any event theyre going to compete in. An athlete is better able to perform at their best if their mind is focused. ... Should we not treat competition horses in the same way? Horses minds have the capacity to be severely anxious, or shut down as we do. A horse that is swimming in sweat before they even compete, because of the turmoil in their minds, has wasted all of that energy that could have won you the class. As riders, we ensure our horses are fit and physically prepared, but in my opinion, we should also be making sure they are equally in the right place mentally as well, whether youre competing or not. A focused and relaxed horse, is always going to make more considered decisions, in the same way a focused human would. They will be wiser about where they place their feet, quicker about reacting to your aids, and more likely to react to those aids in the right way. Any horse has the capacity to be relaxed, even the highly strung thoroughbred. Its up to us as riders to help our horses be the best they can be, and we too, need to be the best we can be for them. This begins with opening our minds, and sometimes changing the way we look at things. Bush Pony Media Thanks again Bec for capturing such wonderful memories of my beloved Iceman

05.01.2022 Wise words from Manolo Mendez Dressage about what a horses muscles tell you What can a horse's topline reveal about its training? 04.01.2022 IN CELEBRATION OF ALL HORSES BIRTHDAY ON 1ST AUGUST! We would like to share this tasty and easy horse birthday cake recipe. It is no-bake, which makes it quick and convenient, fun for the kids to help you with, and practically fool proof for those of us who may not be as gifted in the kitchen as we are in the saddle! ;) Enjoy!... Carrot Cake: 4 cups of sweet feed (or oats) 1 cup of molasses (or honey) 1 carrot, grated or finely chopped 2 carrots cut into carrot sticks 1 apple, sliced Mix the molasses (or honey) and sweet feed (or oats), along with the grated carrot in a large mixing bowl. When fully mixed, place the batter on a plate and shape into the form of a birthday cake. This is a little sticky and a lot of fun, especially for little hands! Layer the apple slices on top as frosting (or use more shredded carrots for this if your horse prefers), and stick the sliced carrots vertically on top, as candles. Its a sticky but delicious treat your horse is sure to enjoy! Happy Birthday, to all our equine friends!!

01.01.2022 The old mare bit at her handler when the girth was being tightened. The handler kneed her in the stomach and said: "Knock it OFF!"... ...The wise horseman, looking into the mare's eyes, asked the question. "why" Later finding the old mare had ulcers. The horse kicked out as another horse passed too closely in the arena, some watching from the sidelines said "that horse is dangerous..."... ...The wise horseman said, "you should have kept that horse out of trouble, it is your responsibility to make sure he isn't in a position to feel as though he needs to defend his space." The horse bucked "resisting" the rider's leg... Someone said go get a whip... ...The wise horseman said, "let's find out why he bucked." (turns out, the rider needed to do less, not more) We are all wise horsemen... Shifting perspective and changing the way you look at things is all it takes... When you think they are being "naughty" you might punish them. Whereas when you see they are expressing what they think, in the only way they can, you will learn to adjust your approach and explain yourself better. My challenge to you this week, when your horse does something "unfavorable" this week, try to see it from his perspective, try to better understand what he is communicating, and then adjust your approach accordingly. Happy Horsin' Around! Paula Curtis Because of the horse, I have learned to be curious, change the way I look and things, and be willing to make mistakes... In my mistakes, I find an opportunity for more learning and growth. Want to meet more amazing wise horsemen?
