23.01.2022 On Sunday we continue our sermon series from Mark’s gospel. 22.01.2022 RESTOR(Y)ING - Pour out Your Hearts Earlier this week I (Brett) read Psalm 46. I don’t know what it is like for you but often a Psalm will just stick for a week. I particularly love the way Psalm 46 begins: God is our refuge and strength,... an ever-present help in trouble. God is our refuge our place of security. God is our strength our source or force for whatever comes. We can trust him, rely on him, go to him at all times. Throughout this week I have been a bit of a grump. I don’t know what it is like for you but often an emotion will stick with me for a week. I’ll wake up grumpy, anxious or stressed maybe even angry. Or something small will set me off. This week I’ve been a bit of a grump; tired, unsettled and so anxious. It is why I am thankful that the Lord is my refuge, and he gives me examples to direct me to engage with my emotions. Like most things in the Christian walk, this is simple but functionally complex, easy like walking, just placing one foot in front of the other, but difficult sometimes you don’t want to get up, let alone move (spiritually and sometimes physically too)! What are we to do? Now, I’m not about to suggest I can unpack this in a short reflection it takes a lifetime and expertise that I don’t fully have to engage with the myriad of emotions we all have. This isn’t a ‘do this and it solves it all’, that would be plan unhelpful. But a book I’ve been reading, Untangling Emotions, gave me a good bit of encouragement (right when I needed it). Psalm 62:8 captures beautifully the simplicity of engaging with our emotions: Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, God is a refuge for us. Do we know that we can pour out our hearts to our God? That as we walk, one foot in front of the other or just emotionally crawling along we can pour out to our God. Trusting God includes pouring out your heart to him. Why? Why can we do this? Well, God is our refuge. So, when I am feeling grumpy or anxious or stressed, maybe even angry, I can pour out my heart, like the scriptures give me example to, like the human example Jesus did engaging with my emotions. You read Scripture it is there; you listen to Jesus he does it; an honest engagement with the Heavenly Father in prayer. So, take him your heart as often as it wells up, surges, slides or dips and dives. A broken and contrite heart he will not despise. For the Lord is our refuge. Oh, and join me in praying that I’m not a grump tomorrow.

16.01.2022 "Over this holiday period our morning messages will focus on a three-week series from the OT book of Haggai. As we begin to emerge a little from the restrictions of the pandemic, into a 'rebuilding' phase of a new 'normal' for church life, this little book reminds us that the people of Israel, as they returned from exile, also went through a period of rebuilding. Under God they had to look at things in a new way rather than just return to the old, while building on the past and looking to the future. This week our Pastoral Care Pastor Vivian Grice continues through Haggai 2:1-9, while on October 18 Dr. Edwina Murphy, from Morling College, will close off the series, looking at Haggai 2:10 - 23. Please pray that we will hear carefully what the Lord might have for us from this book."

05.01.2022 A genuine revival cannot be whipped up or worked up. It can only come from God’s hand as God’s people pray along with working. So With Brett’s induction as our lead pastor in a week’s time we are looking forward to the next phase of our faith journey at Menai Baptist Church. Let us pray for our work together under Brett’s leadership, that it will be prayerful, powerful and fruitful. Let’s pray for him and his family: safety, encouragement, support. Yet above all, let’s pray that the Lord will revive us as a people, bring renewal to churches across Australia, and spiritual revival to our nation.
