24.01.2022 Isn't "Christ" Jesus' surname? And He said to them, But who do you say that I am? And Peter answered and said, The Christ of God. Luke 9:20... We have found the Messiah" (that is, the Christ). John 1:41 Probably the best-known title for Jesus is The Christ, although for many people, they make the mistake of thinking that this is his surname, since many of the writers of the New Testament refer to Jesus as Jesus Christ. The Christ is the English word for the Greek christos. It originally meant anointed with oil, which picks up on the Jewish practice of anointing with oil those who are installed into a special office, particularly that of Kings and Priests. In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word for Christ is ‘masiah’ which is translated as Messiah in English. Rather than being a surname, The Christ is a title - like Prime Minister or King, only far more prestigious. In the Old Testament, the Christ (Messiah) is God’s chosen leader of humanity; the one who would speak and act on God’s behalf and at the end of all history decide the verdict of every one of us. So Jesus is not only the rescuer (which we will see later on), but also the ‘ruler’. We see this throughout his life. In the pages of the Gospels, we see Jesus display his rule over sickness, over nature, and over death itself. In fact, he himself was raised to life to prove that he is God’s chosen ruler over all things. And so, as we start these Advent Devotions it is worth asking ourselves: If Jesus is God’s chosen ruler, does he rule over my life? Do I acknowledge Jesus as the rightful ruler over my life and seek to live for him? - Stefan Bull . . . Celebrate Christmas with us at Menai Anglican Church! There's something for everyone. 24.01.2022 What good is a dead shepherd? I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. John 10:11... I have lived in the city all my life; I have never met a shepherd. So I had to ask the internet what does a shepherd do?. From my one-minute research I am getting the idea that a shepherd is a person who takes care of the sheep; keeping them from wandering off and protecting them from harm. His primary responsibility is the safety and the welfare of the flock. Jesus tells us he is the Good Shepherd. In contrast to the bad shepherd that neglects the flock, Jesus is good because he gives over his life in order to guarantee the safety and welfare of his sheep. You might ask, hold on, what good is a dead shepherd?. True, a dead shepherd can no longer tend to his flock, but this is precisely what sets Jesus apart as the good shepherd. Jesus is the good shepherd as well as the Lord of resurrection - he died for his sheep, but he did not remain dead for long. He overcame death and three days later, he was resurrected. Jesus came to look for us and died for us, and he has risen for us. Death and its threat have come very close to everyone in the world this year. As one of Jesus’ sheep I can rest secure in his love and the hope of the resurrection he has promised. Christmas is the time of the year that reminds us Jesus has come for us, and he invites you to be one of his sheep because he loves you and he wants to give you the best Christmas gift. - Eva Tang #advent2020 #introducingjesus . . . 23.01.2022 The Advent season is a wonderful time of year where we anticipate the coming of Christmas. For most of us, the Advent season means busyness with shopping and social events, or perhaps a calendar with a chocolate each day to count down to Christmas. It's a time of joy, anticipation and excitement, but also stress! The word "advent" comes from the Latin word "adventus" which means "coming". Advent is a way for Christians to remember not only the historical waiting of God's peop...le for the promised Messiah (Jesus), but also the waiting we now experience for Jesus our King to return in glory. This year at Menai Anglican, our theme for Christmas 2020 is "Immanuel", which means "God with us", and this term takes on its fullest meaning in Jesus - fully God and fully man. After a wearying year, it's comforting and hopeful to remember that our God is not distant, but that he came to be with us in the person of Jesus, and he continues to be with his people through his Holy Spirit while we wait for Jesus to come again. To help us focus on Jesus this Advent season, we'll be exploring other names or terms for Jesus that are found in the bible; one each day from December 1st - 25th. A short reflection has been written for each one, and the writers and artists are from our Menai Anglican Church family and staff team. We hope you'll enjoy them and come to know Jesus better.

13.01.2022 At our in-person services this weekend, our wardens and nominators announced that a new Senior Minister has been confirmed for Menai Anglican Church. The team of nominators have worked diligently and faithfully under God throughout the year to find the right man to lead our church. While the timing does feel soon after we've just farewelled the Dingwalls, this has been in process for many months, and we're grateful to God for providing a leader at this time to take us into 20...21. Andrew and Ruth love the Lord, have a passion for people and I believe are exactly who we need next at Menai. We're excited for the next chapter and pray that Andrew and his family will be warmly welcomed at Menai when they arrive in January 2021. Yours in Christ, Stefan Bull

09.01.2022 "God calls us, not because of anything lovely about us, but because of his grace." A Decision to Love - Devotional on Hosea 11:1-2 ‘When Israel was a child, I loved him,... and out of Egypt I called my son. But the more they were called, the more they went away from me.[a] They sacrificed to the Baals and they burned incense to images. Although God chose Israel to be his way back when Abraham was called to follow God (see Genesis chapter 12), it’s at the Exodus from Egypt that Israel becomes a nation rather than a family tribe. Here God wonderfully speaks of his relationship with Israel as a father and son. Nationhood starts with deliverance. In fact, the word for nation is first used by God of Israel at the Exodus. It’s a fact that the nation is reminded of again and again. For example, the giving of the law to the nation of Israel, a marker between being a tribe and nationhood, was prefaced with the words I am the LORD your God who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. [Exodus 20:1] It was love that drove God to rescue them. This love is not brought about by anything intrinsically lovely in Israel, but by God’s sovereign choice it was a decision to love. God placed his love upon them. Deut 10:15 says Yet the Lord set his affection on your ancestors and loved them, and he chose you, their descendants, above all the nations as it is today. This is affirmed in a number of places in the Bible, for instance in Malachi 1:2-3 where God’s choice of Israel is through God’s love for her ancestor, Jacob. God chose Jacob (Israel) but not his brother Esau. That brings great assurance. God chooses to love us. God’s love has little to do with me and everything to do with who he is, and he doesn’t change. It’s a great precursor to the calling of God’s people through Jesus. God calls us, not because of anything lovely about us, but because of his grace. He rescues us out of slavery. Romans 6 says We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. [Romans 6:6] It’s the tragedy of the Old Testament that God is constantly stepping in to rescue his people and constantly being rejected. As early as the first few weeks in its rescued state, the nation is sacrificing to a golden calf, and from then on it seems to be a constant refrain that Israel deserts her God to worship things that are not God. PRAYER Sovereign Lord, thank you for your constant love. Keep me always true to you alone. Amen --- Read more devotionals from our Senior Minister, Bruce Dingwall, at menaianglican.org/devotionals
