14.01.2022 Creating Your Hormone Friendly Christmas Dinner . . . Protein & vegetables... . For most 40+ women worried about watching their waistlines, especially over Christmas, dinner should comprise protein, like chicken-breast, lean beef or fish and a generous serve of vegetables. . Like me, as I get older I just don't need the carbs, especially late in the day. . A more recent consideration is how eating at night affects your hormones, which in turn can make it easier or harder to lose body fat. . Back-loading carbohydrates all until dinner could possibly cause a night-time spike in the hormone insulin. Which could wake you up at night. . However, this shouldn't be a problem if you are metabolically fit and have good insulin sensitivity. Your estrogen levels play a big part in this as well. Adequate levels of estrogen means better insulin sensitivity whereas lower estrogen can mean insulin resistance. One reason why it is important to know your estrogen levels. . So, if you are insulin resistant, a stack of carbs at night might keep your blood sugars higher while you are sleeping. Over time, this hormonal environment could store you more body fat than if you'd eaten your carbs earlier at breakfast and lunch. . If you don't store more body fat, higher insulin levels at night might just make body fat more resistant to reductions . HANDY HORMONE TIP So, if you are a wine or alcohol drinker (which is a carbohydrate) with your Christmas dinner, try ditching the bread, pasta, potato or any other starchy carb with you meal. . This way you are not doubling up and sending you blood sugars and insulin levels through the roof forcing you body in to a fat storing machine. .
