07.01.2022 Sleep hygiene... Seriously? Hygiene is a boring enough concept already and you want me to extend it to the bedroom? Way to kill the mood bro! So many of us are getting terrible sleep, and I reckon underlying stress could keep even the narcolepsy lady in Deuce Bigalow up at night. But when we can't sleep, there are some sure fire things that we can do to make sleep more likely. No, playing Snake on your 3210 is not one of them.... My favourite resource, if you have a subscription to the Calm app is Dr. Orma's Sleep Science (or want to utilise your free trial to just listen to this pearler). Otherwise, the link below summarises the same things. There seems to be pretty wide agreement with these strategies. There is no silver bullet sorry (there rarely is) and I personally still go through some rough sleep patches. But I can get myself back on track much quicker than I used to using these strategies. My personal favourite is the hot shower or bath. Did you know that a hot shower leads to a drop in body temperature 1.5 hours later which makes the body more sleepy? No effort required for that one! On a serious note, what is happening in our lives and in our minds can lead to pretty ordinary sleep which makes us feel worse and on it goes. Whilst the strategies described here can help anyone, we might need something more to get ourselves back on track. Get in touch with me, your GP, psychologist or Lifeline 131114 to get some support. Sleep well my friends! https://www.cci.health.wa.gov.au//Sleep-Information-Sheet-

05.01.2022 A difficult article to read. But an important one. My first thoughts for these boys are that it's not their fault - that as Dr Zac Seidler says, these same boys end up in a psychologists office a few years later wondering what the hell is going on. Anyone who inflicts such horrendous acts on another human is dealing with an equal amount of inner turmoil. This doesn't excuse them or explain away their behaviours - but it does hint at a solution. These boys (and all men and bo...ys) are products or a culture which has taught emotional repression at the expense of compassion and self-awareness. I, along with the experts quoted in this article, believe that the solution lies in welcoming back these lost parts of masculinity - a connection to our emotional, caring, nurturing sides. Emotions aren't some weak thing - they are an innate part of our biology which tell us how to behave in the world, and when they are repressed we act in profoundly un-human ways. This work starts with all of us, but lies heavily with adult men - dads, uncles, teachers - in how this work applies to our own lives, as well as how we bring up the young men and boys in our lives.
