18.01.2022 Uncertainty, stigma and misinformation around seeking professional help is something that everyone, at some point in their life, has likely either seen or experienced For people living with mental illness, worrying about what will happen to them if they seek help or what they may have to do can be an extremely difficult barrier to overcome - not just for them, but also for anyone supporting them. If someone is worried about having to do something they don’t want to (e.g. take... medication, stop drinking alcohol) assure them the final choice for their treatment is completely in their control. Almost all mental illnesses can be treated in the community and only require one thing - asking for help or recognising when someone needs it

03.01.2022 For many people living with mental illness, not believing that professional help will work can be a huge barrier to getting the support they need. They may have tried professional help in the past and felt it didn’t work, or they may simply believe it’s not worth it. A reliable approach is to let them know how professional help has worked for others and how it can work for them too. If it seems appropriate you can also share any positive experiences you may have - let them kn...ow it can often take time and a few attempts to find the right fit. Remember you can always think outside the box and look for alternative ways to provide support, i.e. social outings or online groups. Encourage them to keep trying and remind them that it will be worth the effort

27.12.2021 Seeking professional help for mental health concerns is key to recovery, but there can be all kinds of barriers that get in the way. A common barrier for someone seeking help is not knowing help is available - or not knowing that they're experiencing a treatable mental health problem (this is especially true for anxiety). When talking about mental health with friends, family or colleagues who might be up against such a barrier, reassure them that just like physical illness, lots of people with experiences like theirs have received effective treatment

14.12.2021 If you've noticed someone in your life behaving differently (e.g. withdrawing, seeming angrier or more agitated, drinking more than usual) it could be an important time to connect and have a conversation. Agitation, anger and violence, increased risk taking and increased self-destructive behaviours are the more typical signs of suicidal thoughts in men, but these same signs can also present in people of all genders. If you’re concerned about the changes in a person’s usual behaviours, a mental health first aid conversation may be needed.
