20.01.2022 COVID19 has placed unprecedented stress on young people and their support systems. These figures are alarming and reaffirm the need for proactive steps to be taken now to equip young people and teachers with essential mental health information and skills on how to seek and give initial mental health first aid, and to know how, when and where to refer young people to mental health professionals. The Teen Mental Health First Aid peer support course for adolescents is effective ...in increasing students knowledge and confidence in providing help to a peer, improving attitudes to seeking help from adults, and developing skills in preventing suicide and supporting early help seeking in peers. Providing mental health first aid programs to whole school communities is an urgent and required evidence-based response that every school can implement nationally to support student, parent and staff mental health in response to and beyond the COVID19 pandemic. 18.01.2022 Q. What is the most common mental illness in Australia? A. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illnesses in Australia, affecting around one in seven people (14.4%) each year. 18.01.2022 Q. Is it a bad idea to ask someone about suicide? A. Many people fear that asking someone if they are thinking about suicide could put the idea in their head. This isn’t true. Instead, it can make the person feel less alone with their thoughts, and more able to accept help. It’s important that the question is direct and unambiguous, and delivered without judgement. Are you having thoughts of suicide? or Are you thinking about killing yourself? are both good ways to ask. ...This lets the person know that you are not afraid to talk about suicide and they don’t need to be either. If the person doesn’t feel judged, they will almost always tell the truth. This is because most people don’t want to die. They want their pain to end and they can’t see another way out. You can help them find one. Want to learn more? visit https://mhfa.com.au/conversations #MHFA #mentalhealthfirstaid #anxiety #depression #suicide #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness

16.01.2022 This year’s Reconciliation Week theme - More than a word. Reconciliation takes Action - urges us towards braver and more impactful action when thinking of how we can all contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. Margaret Saunders is a proud Wiradjuri woman from the Bogan River People (New South Wales) and is an Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Mental Health First Aid (AMHFA) Instructor. Margaret is one of the many passionate members of the MHFA community sup...porting others on their reconciliation journey. I believe I carry the cultural knowledge, inspiration and determination to contribute towards reconciliation in our country. My lived experiences are drawn from being an older person who has both Aboriginal and non-Indigenous family, with many children, grandchildren, and an extensive extended family. I have developed and maintained significant and wide-ranging networks, supported by those who play an important role in my own journey and enabling me to continue with self-preservation healing and recovery. Through my delivery of AMHFA courses I am in a position to create a culturally informed, open and safe environment where participants from different backgrounds and cultures are able to receive and talk about Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Social and Emotional Wellbeing and Mental Health. Feedback from participants reinforces that I am enabling partnership and understanding by breaking down barriers and building capacity through community (Aboriginal style and ways) development which plays a major role in moving towards better outcomes for reconciliation. 03.01.2022 **MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID - MEDIA RELEASE** Early intervention focus to lead mental health recovery efforts. Mental Health First Aid Australia has welcomed the release of the National Mental Health and Wellbeing Pandemic Response Plan today.... This comprehensive plan for the mental health and wellbeing of Australians in both the response and recovery phases of the pandemic with an early intervention focus, will result in people taking proactive steps early to look after themselves and to support others in the months and years ahead. Mental Health First Aid Australia CEO Shannon Anderson said Safeguarding the mental health of all Australians as we transition from COVID-19 pandemic response to recovery will require the collective and focused efforts of all Governments, mental health professionals, community organisations and each and every one of us as part of an integrated response. We all have a civic duty to be informed and alert to the signs and symptoms that a friend, colleague, loved one or community member may not be doing so well. Early intervention enables people to seek and receive help at the onset of distress or when experiencing mental health problems, which reduces demand on acute care and crisis services. Being informed, vigilant and working together as a community are concepts we are all well and truly familiar with as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The National Mental Health and Wellbeing Pandemic Response Plan details a range of important foundational principles and priorities that will guide State and Territory mental health responses in coming months. This includes the provision of evidence-based care, valuing lived experience, adopting community-based approaches and collaborative partnerships. These have been guiding principles for the Mental Health First Aid Program in Australia and overseas for many years. Mental Health First Aid Australia and our national and diverse community of more than 2,000 accredited Instructors are ready and willing to work with local communities and workplaces to help build community capacity that will see us develop a collective mental health safety net for all Australians together. 01.01.2022 To effectively support someone facing difficult mental health issues, it's important to adopt an attitude of acceptance. Even if they are different from your own or you disagree with them, everyone’s feelings and experiences are valid
01.01.2022 Today is #RUOKDay and this years campaign focuses on what to say when someone answers no to that important question. Many people feel uncomfortable and unprepared when talking about mental health problems and this can mean the conversation never starts at all. Mental Health First Aid courses teach people the skills to feel confident about what to do next if someone says Im not okay. At an MHFA course, you will learn how to recognise the signs and symptoms of mental... health problems or a crisis such as thoughts of suicide. Youll gain the confidence to give the most effective support you can and when and how to access professional help. There is more to say after RUOK? and the conversation that follows could change a life. For those who want to feel confident and prepared when having that conversation, there is Mental Health First Aid Training. If youd like to learn the skills to have that conversation on RUOK? day or any other day, visit https://mhfa.com.au/ #RUOKDay #suicideprevention #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #MHFA #MHFA_Australia #mentalhealthfirstaid
