24.01.2022 The immune system is a complex network of cells and proteins that defends the body against infection. The immune system responds to infection with both non-specific responses (e.g., inflammation) and targeted specific responses (e.g., T-cell mediated antigenic response). The immune system also keeps a record of every germ (microbe) it has ever defeated so it can recognise and destroy the microbe quickly if it enters the body again. The infectious agents (pathogens) we are ex...posed to include bacteria, parasites, fungi, viruses. We are exposed to pathogens through contact with other people or surfaces where it is able to survive for a period of time. So, when the pathogens do manage to cross the barriers, we have acute infections occur as micro-organisms invade and multiply anywhere in the body, leading to tissue injury through a variety of cellular or toxic mechanisms. Bacteria float around in our blood stream, but viruses get into the cells and hijack the cells machinery (so they can use the energy production to make more infected cells) Nutrients for Immunity Where to find them? 10.01.2022 Winter Wellness is the title of the 3rd free talk this year for North Sydney Community Centre Supporting Immunity (or staying well) is perhaps more important this winter than in previous years? While we can’t always prevent illness, we can try to increase our resistance to illness, to get over illnesses more quickly? This talk will be a very simple outline of the immune system and what can ‘wear it down’. What things in out diet and lifestyle that can create issues that can... impact our immunity? We will then address these dietary and lifestyle measures and get suggestions and solutions to make the, often times small changes, to reduce things that may be impacting our immunity. We will look at the best foods to support immunity and have some recipes and suggestions for their inclusion into your diet. As well, we will look at some nutrients and herbal medicines that you may have questions about? This free talk, on Saturday the 30th May at 10am, will go for around 1 to 1.5 hours and it would be great to see you there? To book in please go to the North Sydney Community Centre web page and book in online at https://www.northsydneycentre.com.au//supporting-immunity-

08.01.2022 Stress is normal and often healthy. In everyday life, stress plays a role in alerting us to life's occasional dangers and challenges, so we can prepare ourselves for them and find solutions to impending problems. Stress is the body's natural way of responding to demands and pressures. It was our defence mechanism against danger and predators. Our `fight or flight' mechanism, brought on by changes to hormones released by the body, tells us how to respond to the stress. We eith...er confront the danger or escape it. Too much stress or prolonged stress can trigger physical, emotional or mental symptoms e.g. muscle tension, mood swings or racing thoughts. Negative stress is a feeling of being overwhelmed and unable to cope with demands. Learn how to destress and build resilience at a free talk this Saturday with me book in at North Sydney Community Centre https://www.northsydneycentre.com.au//stress-less-and-boos See more
