13.01.2022 In a country whose public figures seldom wear their faith on their sleeves, it may come as some surprise that Australia’s longest serving Prime Minister had much to say about the text that is the very basis of Christianity. 10.01.2022 Labor finds itself at odds with calls by industry and the courts to support sensible legislation which would bring litigation funding under the same rules as any other form of investment, writes James Mathias. This regulatory black hole has made Australia the second most attractive class action jurisdiction globally. Since 2013, when exemptions for the sector came into effect, there has been a sharp increase in the number of incredibly profitable securities class action lawsuits and a rise in the percentage of class actions backed by litigation funders. #classaction #litigationnation Read more https://bit.ly/38N1oAX

09.01.2022 We are pleased to see the Royal Commission into National Natural Disaster Arrangements address 4 out of 5 of recommendations put forward by the MRC earlier this year to improve the risk management and mitigation of natural disasters, writes Tim James https://bit.ly/38mNoxF The core recommendations of the MRC report were: 1. Government funding should prioritise risk reduction which will reduce the need to spend on disaster recovery... 2. Introduction of a National Bushfire Risk Rating (NBRR) system for all bushfire-prone communities, properties and structures 3. Introduction of a national approach to land use and building codes 4. Creation of an open access information platform comprising all data required for natural hazard management 5. Tax reform to improve affordability and increase uptake of insurance Of the above, only taxation reform was considered by the commission to have been dealt with by earlier enquiries. Four out of five is a very positive scorecard. We look forward to seeing them become policy and then the subject of practical delivery. #auspol
