24.01.2022 Konstantin Korovin (1861 - 1939) was a leading Russian Impressionist painter, who after visiting Paris in 1885 wrote, ‘Paris was a shock for me... Impressionists... in them I found everything I was scolded for back home in Moscow.’ Paris soon became one of his favourite themes, often painting Parisian boulevards such as this charming picture, which Menzies offered in July this year. It was the first Korovin to be auctioned in Australia and incited much international bidding, ...successfully selling for well above its high estimate. 20.01.2022 RECENTLY CONSIGNED Recently consigned to our November auction is this absorbing painting by William Robinson, ‘The Sacred Rocks, Carnarvon’ 2006. It is a fine example of Robinson’s idiosyncratic depictions of the Australian bushland, expansive yet gratifyingly detailed. 17.01.2022 Albert Namatjira was born #onthisday in 1902 in Ntaria, also known as Hermannsburg, the traditional lands of the Arrarnta people. Inspired by his homeland, Namatjira went on to become a pioneer of contemporary Indigenous Australian art, with his watercolours of the central Australian outback a staple of our nation’s art history. ‘Quarritana’ 1942 depicts the rocky outcrops near the Finke River running through the Hermannsburg area where Namatjira grew up. Interestingly, the... rocky landscape almost entirely fills the picture plane here, differing from his regular composition of a gum tree in the foreground and the golden ratio of sky to land in the background. This piece was much admired in our July auction and sold above its high estimate for A$45,000 (including buyer’s premium).
