17.01.2022 VALE LEON WAGNER The Merbein District Historical Society sadly acknowledges the passing of member, Leon Wagner, on 16/10/2019. Leon was a worthy MDHS Life Member, our founding president, a continuous and contributing member of the executive, serving as president (1997-2007) and a meticulous treasurer for the last eleven years. We will miss his knowledge, humour, friendship, catering expertise, but most of all his presence.... We extend our heartfelt condolences to Kay, Adrian, Annette and their families.

02.01.2022 As 2019 draws to a close we would like to reflect on the year that was. As a society we had field trips to learn about the indigenous history on the Merbein Common, visited the restored crane at Wilson’s Salvage Yard, eleven programs including many guest speakers, four editions of the Merbein Historian magazine, supported the writing of the book on the Merbein CWA, acknowledged Ken Orchard’s role in identifying Blandowski’s site, a public event presenting 11 decades of the Merbein irrigation settlement, another edition to the Merbein town plaques project and continued our involvement in the Merbein cluster box mosaic project. What a year!! If you want to join the society, membership is $20 a year and we meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month at the society rooms at the corner of O’Bryan and Commercial Streets, Merbein.

01.01.2022 Red Cliffs Centenary 2021 - R.G. Cameron certainly was certainly immersed in the Merbein community 100 years ago. George Bain McDonnell first worked in the Mildura area in 1891 as a ranger and later became involved in fruit growing. He enlisted in Mildura in 1915 served in the Middle East and was discharged in 1918. In 1919, as a soldier settler applicant, he was allocated at Birdwoodton, Block 67. ... He later sold a corner of his property to his son, Frank, who established a General Store and Post Office on the Birdwoodton site. (From Battlefield to Block)
