25.01.2022 Merbien Station was host to a special training exercise which included members from Red Cliffs Fire Brigade and Irymple Fire Brigade. CFA District 18 Acting ACFO Wright and Catchment Commander McNally, with the help of the CFA (Country Fire Authority) training team, ran a TEWT (tactical exercise without troops) to practise span of control measures when dealing with a rapidly escalating fire. Teams of four worked on managing a fire as it grew in real time with virtual fire appliances working to their commands via the system controller. A team of four enjoyed role playing the appliances in the adjoining room and communicating to the people undertaking the exercise via radio, to make this the most realistic wildfire training we've ever experienced.

25.01.2022 People may have forgotten what it is, but the liquid from the sky is rain. The following map shows the spectacular lights show the Northern Mallee recieved last night (blue) as well as this afternoon (other colours). Today's cell has casued fires and power outages and have been attended by Mildura and Merbein Brigades.

24.01.2022 Merbein and FRV crews have worked quickly to bring a structure fire under control tonight limiting the fire to the back corner of a transport business warehouse. Crews will be on scene mopping up and overhauling. Obryan Street remains closed while we work.

24.01.2022 They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.

23.01.2022 Thanks to all the volunteers in the community. Let's celebrate National Volunteer Week 2021. Credit to CFA District 18

21.01.2022 Despite our crews, with help from our friends from FRV Mildura, bringing a recent warehouse fire under control within minutes of arriving on scene, we remained on scene for a couple extra hours afterwards, ensuring the fire was safe. It also takes some time to pack up as well. As much as we want to throw our dirty hoses abd equipment in the truck and deal with it back at the station, we need to make sure our truck is operational (you never know when the next fire call is, it could be on our way back to the station). Here is Lt Patterson and FF Brown, changing cylinders on the BA they wore in the fire and restowing them on the Pumper. The BA sets and masks were removed and cleaned back at the station and restowed ready for the next fire call.

20.01.2022 Cold nights still require us to train so we train. Tonight we did a refresher in MVAs.

19.01.2022 We are imploring motorists to slow down and drive to conditions with dust severely affecting visibility on the Sturt Highway. With visibility getting down to less than 10m at times. For over an hour Brigade Members along with Mildura Fire Brigade, Police and Ambulance Victoria attended a vehicle accident caused by the poor visibility. While most motorist did the right thing and drove to the conditions, a number of passenger vehicles and freight vehicles sped past us above the 40km limit and with the poor visibility.

17.01.2022 Hump Day brings us a Total Fire Ban Day and EXTREME FDR.

17.01.2022 It's with great sadness to let everyone know that tomorrow's Walking Off The War Within event has been cancelled.

16.01.2022 People in Meringur, Werrimul, Mildura, Lake Cullulleraine, Hattah, the Stuart Highway, Rainbow, Yaapeet, Japarit, Hopetoun, Nhill and surrounding areas may see ...or smell smoke from the ignition of the following planned burns tomorrow, Sunday 18 April: Murray Sunset Wilderness Pheenys Track: 405-hectare fuel reduction burn, 37 kilometres south of Meringur in Murray-Sunset National Park Wyperfeld Booligal Boundary: 1026-hectare fuel reduction burn, 20 kilometres north of Rainbow in Wyperfeld National Park These fuel reduction burns aim to reduce the spread and intensity of future bushfires by strategically breaking up fuels across the landscape, making it more likely firefighters can contain a future bushfire before it impacts people, property and the environment. 16.01.2022 Late last year we had the 5th Mildura Scout Group Joeys visit the Brigade to see what we do (which is big red trucks and squirting hoses). But we received a letter at our February meeting from the Joeys thanking us for the work we and other Brigades have done during the bushfire season. We were touched by the letter and pictures and say thank you.

14.01.2022 Potentially the last TFB for the season, but it is going to be a SEVERE day. Stay safe.

12.01.2022 The first Total Fire Ban Day of the fire season saw Merbein attend multiple incidents across the Millewa and Sunraysia Districts. Lightning caused a stubble fire towards the SA border which saw us travel over 100km to attend (7.5 minutes through the power of technology). Multiple crews from the CFA (Country Fire Authority), SA Country Fire Service and Fire Rescue Victoria we're responded and helped by private appliances to contain the fire to 50 - 100 Ha, which was being fan...ned by strong winds. Lightning then struck a tree in Koorlong and was exstinguished. As the winds picked up, the Brigade removed a fallen tree from a parked vehicle two doors up from the station. Disappointingly though the Brigade was called to attend a burn off in Merbein township before midnight when winds had been peaking at 70km/h. The house owner was made to extinguish the fire due to the Total Fire Ban still being in place and Police on scene dealt with the illegal burn off with the owner. It doesn't matter if the weather cools down, or that a shower of rain may have come through, the TFB and rules governing burning off remain in place until midnight of that day. See more

09.01.2022 Our heartflet thanks to Dr John Buckley which helped brighten our faces during this dull time. While we are extremely greatful for the generous donation (which will go towards some much needed equipment), we have found more joy that a fire blanket and fire exstinguisher have been purchased incase they ever get into trouble again.

09.01.2022 It's a big day for Mildura Airport with the Air Force Roulettes dropping in for a week of training and the first Qantas flight to Sydney taking off mid afternoon. Check back in latter to see us and Mildura Fire Brigade celebrate this occasion with a water cannon salute!

05.01.2022 FF Crowhurst and FF Pender left Mildura for Gippsland at around lunch time today as part of the next CFA District 18 Strike Team deployment. The air safety demonstration was a little different for the crew as it was performed on the tarmac by one of the Flight Officers of the RAAF who were transporting the Sunraysia Group Fire Fighters today. This is FF Crowhurst's third deployment this fire season and FF Pender's second deployment.

05.01.2022 Remember to change your clocks tonight, enjoy an extra hour of sleep and then test your smoke alarm. Only working smoke alarms save lives.

02.01.2022 Saturday has been declared a day of Total Fire Ban for the Mallee with a Fire Danger Rating of EXTREME. CFA District 18, Acting Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO) Rob McNally has asked farmers in the Mildura, Buloke and Swan Hill Shire areas and the Northern part of Yarriambiack Shire to refrain from harvesting between 1pm and 7pm today 27/11/20 and Saturday 28/11/20. Harvesting in these conditions would bring with it a risk of damage to headers and crops.... "We've had a number of fires started from headers during harvest, and a number of haystack fires," he said. "Tomorrow is going to be just as hot if not hotter, but we've got a cool change coming through with a south westerly, which will increase our fire risk. "We also ask that farmers refrain from conducting harvesting work between 1pm and 7pm on Saturday and monitor your haystack temperatures. If a fire starts, the wind will change the direction of the fire. Cooperation from our farmers in the District to help prevent fires is greatly appreciated.

01.01.2022 COVID-19 is changing how everyone is doing business going forward, us included. No matter what happens, we will continue to provide protection to life and property 24/7! Despite responding to all 000 calls as usual, you might notice that we will be less active around town going forward as we will no longer be: - Training on Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings, - Conducting meetings,... - Participating in ceremonies, - Undertaking community education, and - Opening up the fire station for school or Scout Groups (which we will miss the most). Until this all passes we will continue to be there when you need us!
