24.01.2022 Proudly displaying this magnificent artwork and honouring the original custodians of the land for NAIDOC week. The artwork has been created by local Indigenous Artist, Leanne Watson. Mercure Penrith is situated on on Darug land and therefore the history is much a part of our cultural background. "Darug land is from the Hawkesbury River in the North to Appin in the south, from the Blue Mountains in the... West to the ocean in the East. is from the Hawkesbury River in the North to Appin in the south, from the Blue Mountains in the West to the ocean in the East. The area in Penrith is Darug land and the Clan land of the Mulgoa people, the painting represents the Nepean River with the Bara (Eel) that is our creation story. The area that the Mercure is located is shown as a meeting place as this area was traditionally a place where many groups came together to share knowledge and resources. The Nepean River is known all across many traditional lands for the stones that are used to make stone tools including axes, scrapers, spear points and hammers. There are traditional walking pathways across the river in close proximity to the Mercure, there is shallow places to cross the river and also collect tool making resources. The Mulgoa clan name comes from the black swan (Mulgo) this area is culturally significant because it is a nesting place for the Mulgo, surrounded by Casuarina trees that were used as a medicine for toothache by Darug people, Casuarina trees are also known traditionally as a place for children to wait if they became lost as they can be easily seen under the trees as there is no growth around them, snakes do not go on the fallen leaves of the Casuarina. Along the bottom of the painting is Lamandra, the seeds of the lamandra are crushed and used as a flour and the reeds are used for weaving baskets, bags and fishing nets. The painting gives a snapshot of the Darug significance of the area that the Mercure is located showing some of the traditional resources and cultural significance" Leanne Watson
