25.01.2022 Just as boats seek safe harbour, all of us need a safe home. We are all in this together-you and I, in solidarity- Is Us. Thats our safe home Paper Boat Trail Help the Romero Centre and Adderton celebrate Refugee Week 2020 by sharing your welcome and support for refugees and asylum seekers in our community by contributing to the Paper Boat Trail.... This activity is inspired by the artwork, Asylum Seeker, by current Adderton Artist, Sha Sarwari. Make a simple paper boat with either current or past newspapers articles highlighting refugee and asylum seeker issues or plain paper if newspaper clippings arent available. Add your message of support for refugees and asylum seekers in this Year of Welcome, the 2020 Refugee week theme Take a photo of the boat with visible messages and post a photo on Facebook and or Instagram tagging @MCRomeroCentre and @addertonbrisbane with the hashtags: #PaperBoatTrail #RefugeeWeek2020 and #solidarity. Tag and nominate a friend to also share their support for refugees and asylum seekers by making and sharing their Paper Boat Trail creation. If you are not on social media, please email your image/s to [email protected] and we will add them to the virtual flotilla of #PaperBoatTrail. See pinned post for full instructions. We look forward to talking with you via the Open Dialogue on Facebook and seeing your Paper Boats pop up over social media. join the group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ThePaperBoatTrail/ Warmest regards, Romero Team

The success of the dialogue and the ongoing expansion of the paper boat trail was and is only possible through your hearts and voices. Thank you! While we are now closing the Refugee Week dialogue we warmly invite you to follow the Romero Centre page and welcome your comments. Please keep on posting your beautiful boats and promoting the boat trail! Also, look out for our next, even more passionate, dialogue to celebrate the birth date of Oscar Romero on 14 August! 20.01.2022 Its NAIDOC week, a time to acknowledge and celebrate the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, their country, spirit and celebrate the oldest living culture in the world. The people of Romero honour and acknowledge that our centre is located on Aboriginal country and we would like to pay our respect to the traditional custodians of this land the Turrbal and Jagara peoples. The people of Romero pay our respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging and thank them and their ancestors for the blessing that is being present on their country. This year’s NAIDOC theme is ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’, a significant reminder of those whose knowledge, spirit, connection to country and caring for community are felt deeply and celebrated passionately by the people of Romero.

16.01.2022 Being hungry is terrible. Food is essential for our basic survival, but in our communities, there are children of asylum seekers going to school hungry. Others dont have internet access or laptops to learn remotely, which creates more work for our valued teachers. Today marks the start of Queensland Child Protection Week (6-12 Sept). Its also a National Week of Solidarity giving a voice to those who dont have one. We need YOUR voice to help make more noise so we can provi...de asylum seekers with a basic safety net: food, shelter, medical assistance and dignity. 10.01.2022 Since the beginning of the new coronavirus outbreak, the World Health Organization (WHO) has advised the public to practice social distancing -also referred to as physical distancing- to prevent the disease. #greetlikeme initiative was inspired by the Salam for Safety campaign created by UN Women Afghanistan, which encourages the use of the traditional greeting known as Salam (peace) that involves the gesture of placing a hand on the chest, instead of shaking hands.

07.01.2022 Did you know more than 16,000 children and young people are seeking asylum in Australia? Did you know their families are not eligible for JobKeeper or Jobseeker, and in some cases, they cant even access Medicare? What they need is a basic safety net to support them during and following the pandemic, so they arent left homeless, hungry and destitute. Held during Queensland Child Protection Week (Sept 6-12), the National Week of Solidarity is generating a groundswell of awar...eness to support the most vulnerable in our community. You can help by signing a petition, sharing a statement from our nations educators, attending an online event or holding your own. 05.01.2022 The Romero Centre has this month alone delivered over 150 care packs to some of the most marginalised and disadvantaged members of our community. These families would have gone without even the most basic items if it wasnt for the generosity of our supporters still #donating much needed items to our Romero pantry. For that we thank you form the bottom of our hearts.
05.01.2022 As Romero Centre tries to still assist families and individuals during COVID-19 and the restriction we have a waiting area for people needing to access our support services face to face. Here is Mengistu patiently waiting in our new beautiful waiting area (socially distancing of course)

01.01.2022 Hello friends of Romero! Romero Centre would like to invite you to a Refugees Week community conversation that will be the launch of our Community Dialogues. We are excited to open a space for conversation and deep listening with the wider community. The Purpose is to engage deeply in reflecting on what does it mean to seek refuge. This is an opportunity to come together as a community to explore the many ways we are refugees and to develop and understanding of the diversit...y and universality of what it means to seek asylum. How will it work? We will post a reflective question each day of Refugee Week (June 14th 20th) on our Romero Inspiration Community Dialogue Facebook group page. 7 Questions for 7 Days. For Example: First Question: What does seeking refuge mean to you? Simply post something about why we seek refuge, maybe an interesting fact, experience or photo. Post a response and if you like, tell us a story where you had to seek refuge in the comments section. Please note: This space will be monitored please keep it respectful and in good faith. If you have any concerns please raise them with the group administrator within the group. What happens next? Post your thoughts, stories, experiences, photos (7 Questions for 7 days) and if it feels right, sign the declaration (a link will be provided). Join in on making a boat as a part of the Paper Boat Trail. Opportunity to deepen the conversation: As part of a celebration of Oscar Romeros life and vision you are invited to attend a Zoom community dialogue where we can deepen the conversation even further. This zoom event will happen on the 14th August 2020. Watch this space #InSolidarity. Please Join our Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/RomeroCentreRefugeeweek/ #RefugeeWeek2020 #Solidarity #CommunityDialogue #RomeroInspiration Warmest regards, The Romero Centre team.
