25.01.2022 It has been more than a year since our Melbourne Mercy Connect Coordinator, Sr Mary Lewis and her Assistant Coordinator, Tat Singsa, have been able to hold a Training Day for their volunteers. The past twelve months have been nothing short of challenging, trying and exhausting. The state of Victoria emerged from one of the toughest lockdowns imposed during this pandemic and was reaping the rewards of their efforts. Cases were confined to hotel quarantine and restrictions wer...e slowly being eased. Hope was spreading amongst the community that better days were close and life was returning to some type of normality. Weekly Adult Literacy Classes had recommenced at Dandenong Library and the very first Training Day for new Mercy Connect volunteers was scheduled. Then a snap lockdown in the middle of February closed down the state for five days, putting all plans on hold again as uncertainty gripped the state once more. Despite this setback, the February Training Day went ahead the day after the most recent lockdown ended. Thirty-eight new volunteers attended, learning from and listening to presenters from the Catholic Education Office in Melbourne and Foundation House. You could feel the electricity in the air! This training day looked remarkably different from any training day held before. Socially distanced seating and volunteers wearing masks reminded everyone of the ever-present danger of an invisible enemy. However, with the right precautions anything can be overcome. Individually packed food packages are fast becoming the norm for events to be covid-safe. Tat and Sr Frances prepared over 40 individual food packages for all the volunteers, setting them up on tables for both morning tea and lunch; a very different way of catering. Training Days take much organisation and preparation to put together. Mary and Tat have been working tirelessly to make these days as successful as possible and it is safe to say that this latest one was a great success. Mercy Connect Melbourne is only furthering its impact within the community. The addition of thirty-eight new volunteers means more refugee students will be benefiting from support in the classroom as they settle into school.

19.01.2022 Equal Pay Day | 18th September Across all regions, women are paid less than men, with the gender pay gap estimated at 23 per cent globally. Gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls continues to be held back because of the persistence of historical and structural unequal power relations between women and men, poverty and inequalities and disadvantages in access to resources and opportunities that limit women's and girls' capabilities. ... Progress on narrowing this gap has been incredibly slow. While equal pay for men and women has been widely endorsed, applying it in practice has been difficult. Read More Here: www.un.org/en/observances/equal-pay-day Did You Know? Women earn 77 cents for every dollar men earn for work of equal value - with an even wide wage gap for women with children. At this rate, it will take the next 70 years to close the global gender pay gap. Women carry out at least two and half times more unpaid household and care work than men.

15.01.2022 Mercy Day | 24th September With the better part of a very difficult year behind us, we still need to remember that there are things worth celebrating and one of those things is - Mercy Day. Mercy Day is celebrated on 24 Septemberthe anniversary of the date on which Catherine McAuley (17781841) established the House of Mercy in Baggot Street, Dublin in 1827.... Today, the same house that Catherine began 193 years ago is now the Mercy International Centre. It is still the centre of Mercy and the Sisters of Mercy. 'The purpose of this Association is to inspire Sisters of Mercy and their Associates to incarnate the spirit of Catherine McAuley in ways which are creative and appropriate to the needs of our time and to foster unity of mind and heart among Sisters of Mercy worldwide.' - Mercy International Centre Mercy Works continues Catherine's work through many projects in Australia, Timor-Leste and Papua New Guinea helping some of the most vulnerable members of our global community. Today we remember Catherine and the work she started in the House of Mercy all those years ago. #MercyWorks #MercyDay

04.01.2022 International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women | 25th November #EndViolence Violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in our world today. It remains largely unreported due to the server stigma, silence and shame that surrounds this issue. ... This violence can be physical, sexual and psychological. Its perpetrators can be those you are meant to trust or even strangers. - United Nations Facts: 1 in 3 women and girls experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, most frequently by an intimate partner. Only 52% of women married or in a union freely make their own decisions about sexual relations, contraceptive use and health care. 1 in 2 women killed worldwide were killed by their partners or family in 2017 compared to only 1 in 20 men who were killed in similar circumstances. Papua New Guinea has some of the highest rates of domestic, gender and sexual based violence in the world. With funding from Mercy Works, David and Miriam have been working on creating the path to peace, running workshops focusing on gender based violence and parenting skills. They have changed the lives of hundreds of families, altering their futures for the better. However, there is always more work to be done. Find out more here: http://ow.ly/GeJQ50C3uch

02.01.2022 From PNG | West Papuan Refugee Update There are more than 25 million refugees and displaced people around the world today. The refugee emergency is only getting bigger. The pages of the 'Mini' Bilum have shared the story of 140 West Papuan refugees. Running from violence in Indonesia they crossed the Fly River seeking protection in Papua New Guinea, ending up in a makeshift camp on the grounds of the Monfort Catholic Mission. ... A temporary stay turned into an extended five-month stay in poor conditions. Steven, our Coordinator in Kiunga, was able to visit the camp and found the situation to be dire. Families described having to flee with nothing but what they had on them. It was obvious that they were in urgent need of basic supplies and shelter. The longer they were in those conditions the risk of sickness only increased. Mercy Works responded with emergency funding for food and clothing. From this funding 49 families (149 people) received tools, allowing them to grow vegetables to feed themselves and sell. With help from local organisations, we were also able to find clothing for these families. After leaving home and living in a makeshift camp, these refugees have now arrived in Iowara. They have moved into new villages where they are beginning to start their new lives. Lockdown temporarily shut down the Village Health Program in early March, stopping critical health care getting to those living in remote villages. The lifting of the state of emergency allowed the program to start up again. Steven met with these refugees to discuss training as volunteers with the program, giving them hope for the future. New groups arriving in the Iowara serve as a reminder to the local community of their own journeys, leaving similar circumstances and fighting for their survival. Believing in a better future in a new country is the cornerstone to holding onto hope that life will get better. Missed an earlier story? Find them all in our 'Mini' Bilum editions #MercyWorks
