And enjoy our Max and Mandy giving you the answers in a nutshell :) Many of us dream of having nice shiny white teeth, maybe even that Hollywood smile. Many of us wish we had firm and stable teeth especially if we've had dentures that fit poorly. So we may want dental implants. But can we have them? What makes us suitable or unsuitable for dental i...mplant treatment. Apart from the obvious financial constraints, there are a number of features about ourselves that are important. If we have a medical condition we need to be a little bit careful, although dental implants are a remarkably safe and effective treatment; Irrespective of our age and even osteoporosis seems to have little impact on the success of dental implants. Medication is important and if we have diabetes our healing may be slower than normal. Your medical practitioner can work with your dental specialist to identify and understand any of these medically related factors. Smoking and the use of recreational drugs especially marijuana has an impact on the success of dental implants because Nicotine restricts the blood supply to the tissues around the implants. Giving up smoking is always a good incentive and also helps to pay for the implants. There are local factors associated with the mouth itself. If we have a history of gum disease and have lost teeth through gingivitis or periodontitis there is a risk as these diseases may manifest themselves around dental implants. Excellent oral hygiene and tooth cleaning is really important. The jaw bone provides the means of supporting and surrounding the dental implants which ultimately hold in your crowns and bridges. Having as much bone and of high quality is the best scenario. If you've lost teeth many years ago. The bone will shrink back and may be insufficient to place implants without grafting. Taking the advice of a specialist clinician is very important. They will consider all these factors and more to give you a range of options so you can make an informed decision.
