22.01.2022 Just over 5 years ago, my duaghter was born in Kalgoorlie hospital, for most the birth of a child is something that is imbeded into your memory however this birth made sure that I will never forget that day ... As my daughter was born, the midwife immediatly took her and placed her into one of those glass tub-like beds that most hospitals have to examine new borns in, within a few seconds the midwife turned to me and asked me to please push a button on the wall next to my wi...fes bed, within another few seconds a second midwife came into the room, she took one look at my daughter and tunred to me and said, "Can you please push that button again but this time I need you to push it twice". I pushed the button twice and a doctor came into the room. He examined my daughter and turned to me and simply said "Push the button 3 times". Once I had pushed that button the third time, the room suddenly became filled with nurses, doctors, midwifes and crash style carts I watched helplessly as they crowded around my child and worked on her, after the longest 4 minutes of my life my daughter took her very first breath. I cannot clearly express the feelings I went through during that time, the despair, the fear, the extreme joy and the gratitude to the staff of that hospital who brought my world back into focus and gave me the gift of a daughter. This year I was able to watch my daughter participate in her very first school carnival, she lost her races spectacularly but that really did not matter, she was there and she had fun competting. All this because a midwife knew when she needed to ask for help. 20.01.2022 A prestigious school located in Switzerland was advertising for a new bus driver. The school was located high in the mountains and the Principal wanted to ensure they found the best diver for the job. The 4 applicants all attended the school for the interview at the same time, where they were all asked one question. 'How close do you think you can drive to the edge of the cliff when you drive the children to school?' The first applicant said that he would be very comfortable... driving a foot from the edge of the cliff. The second applicant, not wanting to be outdone, said that he would be comfortable driving with the bus tyres on the very edge of the cliff! The thrid applicant looked the Pricipal squarly in the eyes and calmly replied that they could drive within 3 inches of the tyres hanging off the edge of the cliff! The fourth applicant sat in silence for a moment, comtemplating their answer. The fourth aplicant then said that they would would stay as far away from the cliff as they could! 18.01.2022 Have you heard of Jim Thorpoe? Jim was an American Olympian. And in 1912, was competing in the Stockholm Olympics (Sweden). Jim was set to compete for roughly two weeks.... In the second week of his competing, his running shoes went missing (which was during the 3-day decathlon event he was competing in). On a side note, on the first day of the decathlon, he had completed the 100 metres sprint in 11.2 seconds (which would not be matched again until 1948). On day two of that second week, Jim discovered that his running shoes had gone missing. Some reports say that Jim went around the Olympic village looking for his lost shoes and eventually came back with two odd shoes he had found in the trash, both being different sizes. He had to wear multiple socks on one foot to get the shoes to fit. An alternative story says that his coach hastily organised some shoes for Jim to compete in, however they too were odd and Jim had to wear extra socks on one foot to make one fit. Whichever of these stories are true, they both end up with Mr Thorpe wearing odd shoes and extra socks. The next part is where things get inspiring On that day, Jim competed in the high jump, which he won. He then competed in the 110 metre hurdles, which he finished first place in, with another record breaking finish time (15.6 seconds, which again would not be matched for another 36 years). On the last day of the competition, still wearing odd shoes, Jim competed in the last event, which was the 1500 metre running event. Jim finished that race, in odd, mis-fitting shoes, and achieved a gold medal for the decathlon. It just goes to show that determination, grit and support can help an inspired individual to reach their goals, no matter what. Going through a separation can feel like a decathlon. 11.01.2022 Some inspiration for a Wednesday.

09.01.2022 I took the opportunity a few weekends ago to take my kayak out on the water near the Rockingham foreshore (WA) It was cold but the sun was out. As I was paddling I noticed some activity in the water a little ways out and saw a couple of fins pop out of the water. At first I panicked as I was worried that I was sharing the water with a couple of sharks but when they re-appeared a few moments later I recognised the fins as dolphins. So I paddled a little bit further out, so I c...ould get a little bit closer too..... When all of a sudden I realised I was directly in the path of a whole pod of dolphins and as they danced along the top of the waves directly at me I have to admit I was a little scared. The water was cold and I didn't fancy being knocked out of my kayak. Thankfully at the very last second the dolphins all dove under the water and reappeared the other-side of me. After the adrenalin had worn of, I grabbed my camera phone and I started to film the dolphins as they swam around me, I was hoping that they would charge at my kayak again so I could get some really great footage for face book! I am not sure how long I was filming for but after a while my phone rang, I answered and it was my wife, she was on the beach with our children and she simply said to me, "Hey I am getting worried, I can barely see you and I think you should head back now". I turned around in the kayak to see what she was going on about only to realise that I could see the shoreline but I could not really make out any of the landmarks and more importantly I had no idea where I was in comparison to my family.... I had become distracted by the things going around me and lost focus on what was important to me. It was a long paddle back to shore and for a little while it didn't feel like I was making much headway against the tide, but I persevered and eventually made it back to where I wanted to be. We are constantly surrounded by so many distractions these days we can often loose focus on what we have originally set our sights on.
