24.01.2022 Sadly, today we say farewell to Tim Friel, our current coordinator. Tim is leaving the meriSTEM team to study and teach at Wangaratta High School through the Teach For Australia program. Tim's departing message: "It has been an honour to support the efforts of volunteers and teachers to create and implement meriSTEM resources over the past three years. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with hundreds of keen volunteers and hope to catch up with you at a meriSTEM event in the f...uture. Best of luck with your studies and other endeavours." The hiring process is in it's final stages for our new Project Coordinator to lead meriSTEM through the next stages of content development and impact growth. Until the new staff member is actively in the role in January 2022, please get in touch with us via email ([email protected]). Professor Joe Hope will be monitoring this inbox and we apologise for any delays in responding.

23.01.2022 Unfortunately, the meriSTEM team has regretfully postponed our upcoming TeachMeet scheduled for Wednesday 12th May at 4:50pm AEST. We've heard from a number of teachers who are now unable to participate because there are plenty of great STEM events occurring on this afternoon across the country. We recognise that the latter part of term 2 is a busy period for teachers, so we'll look to reschedule this TeachMeet to early term 3. Keep an eye on your emails for an updated invit...ation to participate. Thank you to those who put their hand up to present. We hope that you're able to share your experiences with the meriSTEM teacher community soon. Best wishes to all teachers for the rest of term 2!

21.01.2022 Congratulations to you all! A huge thanks to those who contributed to meriSTEM through the ANU+ program. Your volunteer efforts to grow our content library have assisted students across Australia, particularly those affected by COVID lockdowns

15.11.2021 Today, Thursday 9 September marks R U OK Day! RU OK? Day encourages us to start and continue meaningful conversations with those around them by asking, ‘Are you ok?’ to prevent suicide. With lockdowns happening across the country, it has become more important to check up on friends, families and neighbours and ask if they are ok. Before you start these conversations, make sure you are also ready and prepared to have the conversation. When you are ready you start the convers...ation, use this 4-step guide. 1. Ask 'Are you ok?' When asking 'Are you ok?' be friendly and kind. Make sure you choose a suitable environment to chat, such as somewhere safe and quiet. It may help to bring up specific things you are concerned about e.g. 'You seem more tired than usual, are you ok?' If they don't want to talk, don't force them to. Acknowledge that they don't want to talk and let them know you are happy to talk if they need to in future. 2. Listen with an open mind. Avoid be judgmental and listen with respect. Take what they say seriously and don't interrupt or rush the conversation. If they need time to think, be kind and wait. It may help if you ask further prompt questions such as "how long have you felt this way?" 3. Encourage Action. See if they have gone and sought support regarding their situation and offer to support them if you are comfortable doing so. If you know a suitable support option, you may want to suggest that. Ask what they have done in the past to manage similar situations. Check if they have been feeling this way for 2 weeks or more, if so encourage them to seek professional help such as their GP, ANU counselling or other appropriate services. If they are an immediate risk to themselves or others, call 000. 4. Check-In. After your conversation, check in later to see how they are doing. Ask to see if you can do anything to support them. See if they've found a better way to manage the situation. If they haven't done anything, don't judge them. They might just need someone to listen to them for the moment. For further tips head to: https://www.ruok.org.au/how-to-ask If you or someone you know needs urgent help, contact Lifeline on 13 11 14. If you're an ANU staff or student, there are specific supports available in the image below.
