24.01.2022 Merlewood Angus is super excited to announce that we secured the bull of our choice LOT 12 Millah Murrah Capitalist Q21 (NMMQ21) at the 32nd Annual Bull Sale Millah Murrah Angus Due to COVID travel restrictions we were unable to attend the bull sale but thanks to all Ross Thompson's assistance and our trusted stock agents we were able to draw up a short list and ultimately bid with confidence and secure the bull of our choice. From our own experience no-one knows the line up ...of sale bulls that the stud principal(s) and farm manager(s). Therefore our top tip is reach out to the breeder and: * Be clear and concise about your breeding program needs - this includes pedigree and particular EBV traits * Be honest about your budget * Ask to see footage of the animal if none available on the stud's website and don't be afraid to ask ALL the questions you want to know This builds trust and transparency and saves a lot of time wasting. It also means on Sale day you can focus your efforts on the bull or two of your choice rather than being scattered and jumping all over the place - which can be specially tempting when watching online To this end we decided to have an agent onsite bid on our behalf as we were unsure of our internet connection. This also eliminates panic buying. We look forward to welcoming Millah Murrah Capitalist Q21 onto the farm later this week and we know that with his strong kiwi genetic and a dam like Prue that he will add exactly what our clients are looking for into our breeding program. Our girls (first calves) are looking forward to meeting him as much as we are. After a few weeks of adjusting to life on our farm, our environment and our management style Millah Murrah Capitalist Q21 will head off to work to entertain the Merlewood Angus maternal mums. #iuseangusbulls Meat & Livestock Australia https://www.mla.com.au//how-to-choose-a-sire-when-you-ca/
20.01.2022 This week has been a busy week in the cattle yards for our Farm Manager Luke ; despite the less than spring like weather the show must go on as scheduled Monday we took tail tests of all our #2021autumnsalebulls so we can have the most accurate data that we can, to help you our clients, with your bull selection at sale time . Also as you know the best bull gets to remain in our breeding program as a litter bull to mop-up our heifers ensuring that our best genetics stay ...in our breeding pool and that all our clients benefit from this breeding and not just the clients with very deep pockets . This year we have two contenders vying for that coveted spot - namely Merlewood Driven Q89 and Merlewood Black Onyx Q81 Here is a short video clip of HODM89 eagerly returning to the lush green grass of his peaceful paddock after a long day in the yards. The new tail test collector kits are just a tad futtery and take lots more time so I think we might flip over to tissue tests next year As you can see Merlewood Driven Q89 ticks many boxes. We would love to hear your thoughts............. Each year the choice gets harder and harder, as there are so many cracking bulls in the drop #iuseangusbulls #merlewoodangus #iusemerlewoosangusbulls #farmlife #blackangusbulls #gippslandborn
20.01.2022 The photo in this repost shows Merlewood Angus 2021 Autumn Sale bulls in a paddock of outback oats which was renovated with a green manure millit crop in the late summer of 2020. Aren’t these yearling bulls looking magical already Very little Fertilizer was used and as you can see the paddock renovation using the green manure process has payed dividends with a bumper crop of forage oats. ... This paddock will be grazed 2 times and depending on weather cut for silage or hay. We heavily depend on crops like this for quick and stable weight gains over the winter months for both our future sale bulls and our replacement heifers. #naturalfarming #greenmanure #iuseangusbulls
20.01.2022 .... and that’s a wrap for spring joining 2020 This year in an effort to consolidate hours in the cattle yards our recipients are in the same joining mob as AIG2 with the exact same synchronisation program. Our motto here is always work smarter and not harder which our cattle love us for. This year a small mob of 19 cows were prepped and embryos inserted into 14. ... With the last of our Braveheart sire embryos; as well as new sires SAV RAINDANCE and MILLAH MURRAH MARLON BRANDO in the mix -joined to our elite females we are looking forward to the progeny in 2021. A big thank you once again to our trusted ET vet, Doug Watson, who has been with us since the start of our journey. His laid-back attitude coupled with his knowledge and professionalism makes working together fun. #iuseangusbulls #blackanguscattle #merlewoodangus
20.01.2022 AI GROUP 1 inseminated today by our technician of choice , Michael Bracecamp. Micheal is a neighbour, a local farmer, a client as well as an employee of HICO. Like many farmers he keeps himself busy and juggles many priorities and commitments. We are pleased to partner with HICO for our joining season - they always have our back ; are on call ; professional and prompt ; ... and nothing is to much trouble.... Even with the added regulations of #covid we all adhere to the imposed regulations to keep everyone safe as well as ensuring our safety in the cattle yards. Having a great set of yards and cattle crush helps this to no end Clipex Australia Stay safe everyone and we look forward to seeing you all in the new year at our #beefweek as well as our upcoming #autumnbullsale in March. As one wise stud breeder shared buying in autumn is always great bang for buck . So make sure you beat the spring fever and secure the bull of your choice in autumn without having to pay the ‘grass fever premium’ . Our breeding stock are looking the best ever and we hope your cattle are too. With talk of traders switching to breeding there has never been a better time to make sure you are still breeding up. We look forward to seeing you all next year and doing the elbow bump . #iuseangusbulls #merlewoodangus #blackanguacattle #gippsland

Once again some exciting genetics will be added to our pedigree pool #iuseangusbulls #blackanguscattle #angusaustralia
14.01.2022 Today we are pulling CIDR’S and injecting PG. A great bonus of having calves at foot during our AI program is the cattle yard education that the calves receive by default: It’s fun It’s with mum... It’s with their calf friends It’s stress free It’s a positive experience.... no nasty needles etc So after running through the yards a few times at this age, it helps make weaning a breeze. A win win for farmer and cattle alike. What’s your low stress handling top tip ? # iuseangusbulls #merlewoodangus #blackanguscattle #blackanguscows #cows #calves #cattleyards

10.01.2022 We vet checked 54 heifers and 48 make it all the way through to AI . Of the 6 not included in the AI program , 4 are just a wee bit immature, 1 is underdeveloped and 1 has only one uterine horn. These girls will run with the bull only - saving unnecessary wasted expenditure on AI. A beautiful spring day to be working in the cattle yards .... #vetcheck #prejoiningchecks #blackangusheifers #cattle #southgippslandblackangusstud
08.01.2022 Cows n calves up in the house paddock cleaning up the paddocks for Harry the horse. I love having the cattle in the house paddocks. Looking out each morning seeing their beautiful black magic and watching the calves frolicking (yes our calves actually DO frolick) at the witching hour before the sun sets is pretty amazing. Feeling grateful for all that we have ........ and our new from Millah Murrah Angus is loving life in the Gippsland too. He’s just about to serve .... Hope you are all having a sensational spring ... and remember check your bulls regularly - every couple of days or at least twice a week while they are working. Especially new bulls who can get a bit excited their first time in the paddocks. #blackangus #anguscattle #merlewoodangus # farmlife #feelinggrateful
05.01.2022 THE IMPORTANCE OF CHECKING YOUR WORKING BULLS EACH YEAR PRE-JOINING Each and every year we endeavour to fertility test our working bulls before the boys go out to work. Like most farmers, our boys only work for one season a year - namely spring joining - so they get to spend a lot of time playing around in their paddocks ; sometimes getting up to mischief. So bulls have a lot of down-time.... As part of the annual pre-joining check we get to inspect their pisel for signs of injury and make sure the animal is still able to have a healthy erection. Sadly this year one of our star joining sires Injemira Up River N154 has injured his pisel - and although the scar tissue has healed this injury has interfered with his ability to have a healthy erection. Whilst disappointing and frustrating news at least at this stage we can come up with an alternative joining plan rather than be faced with a mob of empty cows at preg testing With current and accurate , actual facts we can : Plan for the worst, hope for the best Have you arranged your pre-joining check yet ? It is a cheap insurance policy. Gippsland Veterinary Group - 7 Clinics Across South West Gippsland Angus Australia #iuseangusbulls #merlewoodangus #blackanguscattle
04.01.2022 Even though we slaughter our own organic beef on-farm we are mindful of how Covid-19 is affecting small businesses with so many people experiencing drastic cuts in their income, so we are making an extra effort to support our local butcher Craig Young's Butchery with more than our normal supplementary shopping we normally do there. We regularly purchase : Tony’s own pickled onions chicken for the people ... chicken carcasses for the Rottweilers ( did we mention they eat one each per day ) beef dog bones top up on eggs when our chooks off the lay smoke it all bbq smoke spice boxes ( easy one use that adds that extra yum factor to all your bbq secondary cut meats ) ...... to name but a few. So when we saw these tomohawks, what farmer in their right mind could walk past them . Cowboys steak for dinner today . The only question is do we eat one each or share one Beef. 03.01.2022 Our clients capturing Merlewood Angus purchased bulls and their sired off-spring on their farms. Paddock Pictures.
01.01.2022 It’s that time of year again - spring joining ; and heifers up first. As heifers take longer to return to estrus as first time mums with a bub at foot, we inseminate our heifers a month head of our cows. This lets them slot into our annual joining slot. ... It also lets us keep a bit more of an eye on the first time mums when it’s calving time This year we are trialing a new hybrid-fixed time AI program to maximise our results. A handful of heifers on standing heat ahead of schedule, so worth the extra yarding. Tomorrow is AI-day Professionalism and punctuality make HICO our local partner of choice . #iuseangusbulls #blackanguscattle #merlewoodangus
