04.01.2022 Are you undeserving? The gift of grace In the Harry Potter books, the dementors are dark creatures that drain the happiness and joy from human beings while leaving negative emotions behind them. The dementors icy cold presence can be felt before they are visible. Wizards lose their power and strength if they are exposed for too long to energy sapping power of the dementors. Moving into the territory of uncertainty is the place that is beyond our current abilities, talents or ...understanding to make sense of what is going on. Like the Wizards of Hogwarts, we can feel powerless and feel the energy or motivation sapped when affected by negative patterns of thinking. If we are us to `being in control’ then being in a place where we have less control can be a fearful experience. Many of us feel `undeserving’ or begin to question `who am I to..’ write a book, take up a new sport, speak up more or try something beyond our current cognitive map of life. There are some advantages to the story of `I am undeserving’ that can be help rather than hold us back from exploring new territory. Life is an act of grace we all benefit from other people’s positive actions as an act of grace. I can enjoy visiting protected national parks and free healthcare due to the efforts of social visionaries who wanted to improve the quality of life for all people. Many of the knowledge and insights that are freely available to me know are a consequence of philosophers, teachers, writers and others who have pursued knowledge and made it available through their writings. Grace undermines a sense of entitlement. Acknowledging grace as the free gift of other people’s work engenders a sense of gratitude, thankfulness and joy. Overall, a better quality of life that chooses to focus on our current blessings. Grace undermines self-absorption and helps me to look outward rather than inward on what is `wrong’ or `missing.’ A life based on grace leads to action. `I am undeserving’ is not the last word. It is possible to acknowledge this fact of life while taking action and moving beyond this story towards new experiences. Instead of giving into the critical voice that says `You are undeserving’, why not acknowledge this fact and give thanks or acknowledge that life is a gift of grace to be received.
