13.01.2022 **Its Coeliac Disease Awareness Week 13th -20th March ** Coeliac disease is a lifelong condition which means that your body cannot tolerate gluten. This disease affects 1 in 70 Australians, although around 80% of people remain undiagnosed. People with coeliac disease feel unwell if they have eaten foods containing gluten, as their immune system reacts to it. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, barley and oats and can be found in some of our everyday foods such as bread..., pasta, cereal, biscuits, cakes etc. Some people can have symptoms and other wont have any at all. Common symptoms can be constipation and or diarrhoea, stomach pain, tiredness, weight loss, mouth ulcers, vomiting , growth problems, and fertility problems. Coeliac disease can be easily diagnosed with a simple blood test which is used for screening and if a positive result a then you would be referred for gastroscopy which is a quick and painless procedure. As this is a genetic condition, immediate family members should also be screened. If a proper medical established diagnosis of coeliac disease has been detected then a gluten free diet would be recommended as it would reduce the long terms risks associated with coeliac disease.
