This phrase was coined by Dr David Perlmutter (author & researcher on brain health), to address the paradox of the things that are supposed to make us happy, but what they are actually leading to is negative changes in the brain. These changes impact our ability to make good decisions and we can get stuck in a cycle of loneliness, anxiety, depression, and other negative mental and emotional symptoms. Social media has contributed to this... state by lighting up a part of the brain when we receive a like. This makes us feel good and encourages us to continue to seek more positive feedback. Such is the addictive nature of social media. Good question ... our genes receive messages from the lifestyle choices we make, ie. whether we choose to eat high fibre, wholefoods rather than processed & packaged, sugary options, etc. We are not destined to succumb to the illnesses our parents & grandparents suffered. Our genes translate the messages they receive and express themselves according to our personal choices. So make healthy diet choices, develop consistent exercise habits, and practice a regular sleep routine.
