21.01.2022 The grass is greener on the other side! Bother! The inner gardens of Merrilees are not too big and take less than an hour to mow. However... We live on a corner allotment of a half acre block with very generous footpaths. When that's done, there remains the roadside grass. Mowing the outside takes ages!

20.01.2022 Balancing colours. This is part of a new bed formed by Susie, with intense activity yesterday. The 'Thank You' rose opened fully this morning. Design tip... Choosing different plants with similar flowers suchas Alstroemeria shown here leads to a nice colour balance.

16.01.2022 Rain at last! Filled both 20kL tanks in a day and produced a torrent past our front gate. The Bradford pears, on left and right, that Ben and I cut back from monsters to a more civil 2.6 meters, are coming back greener and healthier than ever. I had also cut roots that were tipping the sandstone post over. I did this in Winter to reduce stress. Doing this at the same time as pruning will have helped by reducing the leaf load.

15.01.2022 Twin purpose pot plants. Susie found this tomato plant self sown in the pot after the previous lemon tree had died. Companion planting, she staked it and surrounded it with basil, parsley and thyme. Slightly shady, but the tomato plant seems happy. Being in a pot, we can move it into a sunnier place. I wonder what kind of tomates it will give? Should look good in our front garden when it produces bright red tomatoes.

11.01.2022 How much is too much? If the the fountain water shoots too high, it splashes everywhere. Too low, and the lower bowl doesn't do its dripping thing. This was just right, and I can hear the sound of it from our verandah.

09.01.2022 Pond or fountain? Which is best? When we first came to Merrilees this fountain sat in a blue base with clear water that quickly went green and needed chemicals and regular draining and refilling. We placed Louisiana iris and water-lillies in pots in it, to take out nutrients that support algal growth and to shade out the algae. It has been quite successful and the more natural pond is pleasing. We get yellow and pink flowers in spring.

08.01.2022 This lovely plant came up between the stones in the path, growing from seeds from an original in the bed. Hurray for plant ID Apps - it’s an Osteospermum Jucundum or Cape Daisy.

07.01.2022 Getting serious about pruning. These Bradford pears, to left and right of the Pratten Street entrance, was twice the height last year and the branches met in the middle. Fabulous...but... Between them they made a black forest and everything nearby suffered. Susie like to tip prune. You can see that my idea of tip pruning is at a more courageous level. Yes - they survived, and all is well. I think Susie has forgiven me.

05.01.2022 Before...AFTER This pile of dirt was a single St John's wort plant before digging started. Its brother is in the background. The patch is at the N/W corner of Merrilees, and greets people entering by the driveway entrance. These four photos show the progression of planting. Grand! We have two hot days coming up, so we'll see how we went. GARDENING TIP...... The mulch over the top should be no more than 50 mm and placed loosely otherwise it can stop water penetration. This will also save a fortune in sugar cane mulch. The old idea of placing biscuits of lucerne hay is less effective and can lead to dry soil...the opposite of what one wants. See more

03.01.2022 Welcome to the Merrilees blog. Things are always happening, and we'd love to share these with you as they occur. Our cover photo happened yesterday, with two swallowtail (?) butterflies engaged in a dance around the garden.
