20.01.2022 Cricket cancelled today

20.01.2022 Cricket over at Murrurundi today started off very well for Merriwa even after losing the toss. The home side elected to bat first, however, after 17 overs they were 5/45. Unfortunately the game was called off due to bad weather. Our bowling stats for the session deserve a mention though:... Brad 2/19 off 8 overs Tom 1/19 off 6 overs Neville 1/1 off 2 overs Steve 1/4 off 1 over Shout out to Doug, with 3 catches at slip off Tom, Neville and Brad. If anyone fancies themselves as the next Bradman or Lillee, feel free to get in touch with the team, we are always on the hunt for new players

08.01.2022 It was a hot day in the Upper Hunter last Saturday when Merriwa took on Bunnan at the MCG. Merriwa won the toss and elected to bat. Jon and Doug opened the batting and made a good start until Jon was bowled for 11. Next to the crease was Brad who could only add 2 to the score before being bowled by an in form Glen Davies who took 3 wickets in all. Pete made a quick 13 before being caught behind, James A out for 10, James M out for 11, Neville out for 10, Andrew out for 13.... Jack (10*) and Tess (4) had a good 20 run partnership towards the end before Mick miss hit for a . Merriwa took to the field, where Bunnan got off to a quick start making 16 off the first over. The first wicket came in the 3rd over, from Brad caught behind by Jon. Doug took the next 2 wickets, well caught by Pete and James M. After drinks James A took 4 wickets, clean bowling two batsmen, with Nev and Tess catching the other two. It was a struggle to get M Soper out, until he faced Jack and was caught in the deep by Mick. Nev and Jack took the last two wickets, with Mick again catching off Jack for the final wicket. Final score Merriwa all out for 175, with Doug top scoring on 56. Bunnan all out for 151, with M Soper top scoring on 59 Merriwa play an in-form Murrurundi tomorrow A big thankyou to all our sponsors as well as our hardworking groundsmen for preparing an excellent wicket.

03.01.2022 Conclusion of the regular season in sight, top 4 place all but secured for Merriwa In the second last round of the regular season, Merriwa took on Brook Blue at Weeraman Oval, hoping to consolidate a top 4 position moving into finals. Jon Osmond lost the toss, however, it didn’t matter as Brook chose to bat first, which would have been Merriwa’s choice anyway. Dom Cooper opened the batting, and despite an early appeal for caught behind proved solid on the off side but bell...igerent on the leg side, hitting a well-timed six over mid-wicket in the 7th over. His partners were not quite as determined with only M Morrison reaching double figures. Dom finished with 43 runs in a team total of all out for 77 in the 30th over. The Strachan brothers did the damage with the ball for Merriwa, taking 9 of the 10 wickets between them, Rob with an incredible 6 for 10 from 7 overs, and Brad with 3 for 14 from 7 overs. Merriwa’s openers started a little shaky, Pete Ashford was the first to go with 11, followed by Jon a couple of overs later for 14. Greg Sheehan and Brad Strachan then steered the away side to victory, Brad looked in fine form making a quick 31 not out, which was not quite enough to supersede his older brother for man of match honours, and Greg 18 not out. Merriwa reached Brook’s total within 16 overs in a dominant display. Merriwa will now take on the Muswellbrook Silver Slugs on Saturday in the last regular season game of the season. Hopefully it will be a home game, however there is a possibility the game will be moved to Scone as efforts continue to repair the outfield of Apex Oval after significant rain in the past weeks. The Silver Slugs are coming off a big win over Bushrangers on the weekend and will be no easy beats. If Merriwa can win next week, we will likely finish the season in 2nd place behind either Belltrees or Belmore who play each other in a blockbuster this weekend.

03.01.2022 Merriwa will be playing two 20Twenty matches in Scone at the Bill Rose Complex tomorrow. Game 1 at 12:30 against Brook Blue Brad ... Greg Pete Steven Jack Neville Adam Doug James Mick Jon (C) Game 2 V Bushrangers Brad Greg Pete Steven Jack Neville Rob Doug James Mick Jon (C)

02.01.2022 After a bye for the first round, Merriwa Lightning travelled to Belltrees for the second round of the 20/21 cricket season. Unfortunately our luck was out, final score Belltrees 4/140 defeating Merriwa 5/138. Merriwa won the toss and elected to open the batting against a strong Belltrees team. It was a tough wicket, with the team at 1/33 at drinks, before making up for lost time in the second 20 overs. Pete opened the batting but was bowled on the second ball, whilst Captain ...Jon stuck around for a little longer, making 14 runs off 50 balls. Doug made a handy, if steady, 27 runs before being caught out. The next wicket to fall was Rob, out for 1 off 2 balls. Following on was Nev, making a swift 12 runs off 6 balls, not out, as well as Brad who was our top batsman for the day, with 59 not out. The second innings saw Belltrees at the crease, with Merriwa out in the field. With their openers hitting a 4 off the first ball, it was bound to be a tough afternoon. All rounder Nev again made his mark with the first wicket, 1/22 off 5 overs, ably caught by Pete. Star of the match, bowling 6.5 overs was Steve, his figures 3/31. Also assisting with the bowling was Jack, Rob and Brad. Belltrees top batsmen were T. Coe with 55 runs and C. Simpson with 39 not out, well done. Next week will see us in Scone playing two 20Twenty games against Brook Blue and Bushrangers, starting at 12:30pm. A big thank you to our fabulous sponsors and supporters!!
