04.01.2022 Sandy Hollow to Ulan Railway. Works at number 3 tunnel. Tunnelling commenced using the same methods that the old miners used back in the 30's and 40's. Progress was too slow so a new company was brought in to speed things up using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) The old method resulted in nice smooth walls but the Austrian method left a very rough and uneven surface. The Alpine Miner gouged out a tunnel quickly and rock borers bolted mesh on to the rocky surface and then concrete was sprayed over the mesh giving a very rough and unattractive finish. Driving the Villiers trike through the tunnel really highlighted the difference in the finish. Pics and story James Constable
