25.01.2022 This is what it's all about! Saturday's final race in the Winter Series had all the elements we've been advocating for members of the Club. Nine yachts raced on another glorious winter's day, but the real story was the fact there were 14 boats out enjoying being afloat (15 if you count the Commodore having fun setting the course and watching over the fleet in his RIB). The fleet was diverse, from the Peach family's big Schionning cruising cat Addiction through to Cody Marshal...l on a 14' Hawk cat. In between were the 6-8 metre group having a to-and-fro tussle, and stalwarts Fuzzy Logic, Calypso (the photogenic red one) and Maranne. Aside from the racing competitors, Furmo took a crew of nine merry revellers aboard Signalmaster to Ulverstone for lunch who were still rocking to the (real) music when they tied up back at the Club. Plan Four was cruising with Peter and crew sailing about in the sun off the Bluff, Trevor was again out pottering in Patsy, and Chris King escaped for some time afloat aboard Escapade. Former Commodore Phil Good was spotted in a stealth black RIB lurking about the course photographing the boats through an enormous telephoto lens and he then joined the crews for a catchup in the bar afterwards. Three Leven YC trailer-sailer visitors were welcomed with Precious Pup and Alice showing the locals how it's done on the day. (How does that happen? Where's the handicapper?) Pac Man an Elliot 7 TS recently purchased from Queensland was having it's maiden sail down here, and unfortunately had some first outing gremlins still to be sorted. Looked the goods when she got going though! A long embrace with a turning mark by Craig and crew aboard Addictive resulted in an agonisingly slow penalty 360 turn, but Lance breathed a sigh of relief out the front. While participation was the objective, there were still some competitive cries heard across the water - Starboard after several port starters were nailed off the line, and at least one Buoy Room call which was followed by a fluffed headsail raise with two competitors sneaking through. Don't you hate that! The winner was..................everyone a great day, and a great series, out on the water. On the scoreboard courtesy of another handicap win in Saturday's Race 5, Anton and Teresa aboard Precious Pup (blue spinnaker) took out the Winter Series from MYC Committee member Lance Burton and the boys on Fuzzy Logic. 24.01.2022 Remnants of a Storm cell. Where Did That Come From? Despite the completion of the Mersey Yacht Club Winter Series, three stalwarts decided another scratch race was the order of the day on Saturday. Principal Race Officer (PRO) Rob Sly got the stern chaser contest underway from the mouth of the river on time (newsworthy apparently). The three yachts set off at staggered times sailing west. Rob's Maranne left first, chased by Calypso until Lance and crew on Fuzzy Logic had o...vertaken Maranne. That was the trigger for them all to turn around, racing back to the Mersey as this ominous cloud formation rushed over the horizon. Andrew on Calypso reported the black storm cell produced sudden hail with the wind strength increasing dramatically from 12 to more than 30 knots for the maybe ten minutes the tempest lasted. On the right of the picture you can just make out our PRO (Rob) battling on with full sail. All crew returned safely with stories to tell. Meanwhile Furmo did another Ulverstone cafe run with a heap of bodies on board. Great hospitality. Great boat for it. Pic credit: Andrew Ayton

20.01.2022 Saturday’s activities showcased sailing in Devonport at it’s finest. What a spectacle - the rigging lawns and pontoons in front of the Club were crowded with boats and sailors getting ready on a glorious day with a 15 knot sailing breeze. (And in amongst this hive of activity our Dragons Abreast boat paddling ladies had a great morning as well.) Training for juniors and adults in the morning, a junior race in the river before lunch, briefing and a ‘sav’ at the bar, then 21 ya...chts of all description from along the coast competing in the Cock of the Mersey Race. The BBQ and presentation afterwards had the place buzzing with conversation. Thank you to the visitors for putting on such a spectacle, and the locals for the efforts in putting in the work. And the winner is..Mike Darby from Wynyard YC. (Full results will be posted separately shortly.) Our volunteers all of you including the ‘quiet achievers’ are appreciated thank you. A special shout out this week to our Treasurer Angela Marshall (who became a full-blooded dinghy sailor turtle on the way back in from the race course) and her children Cody, Jamieson, Sam and Maddison who put in two big days of effort. Family involvement at our Club is so vital to our recent growth. Hope to see you all out on the water again soon. See more
17.01.2022 Winter at it's best Two Leven YC visitors boosted the fleet to seven yachts for the 4th Race of the MYC Winter Series. After a light start for the first triangle the breeze built to about 5 knots making for a very pleasant day on the water. Fuzzy Logic got the gun with Priceline Ulverstone belying her 24' to cross second and take 3rd on handicap. But overall honours for the day went to the visitors from LYC - Farr 6000 Katie 1st with Precious Pup second. It was a glorious day on the water for everyone Terry and Angela zipping about on the RIB, Trevor out on Patsy, Ronsley and Terry taking a heap of photos from the runabout, and John even had a short run in Highlander, just to confirm she needs a bottom clean . Stay tuned for the next race.

09.01.2022 Going, going, almost gone. Thanks to Trevor and his trusty chainsaw, help from Rod, and a big group at Saturday’s working bee, the abandoned plywood boat eyesore has been almost cut up and partially taken to the tip.
