10.01.2022 Every year, Mersey Community Care unveil the living memorial to remember the passing of people who once generously volunteered their time with us. Unfortunately we have another 3 names to add to this memorial for the year 2020. We stand here today to pay our respects to: Irene Poke gave her time as a clippie Laurie Keygan also gave his time as a clippie Raymond Read gave his time as a driver in transport... The Volunteer Starting at 15 he worked for the next 50 years of his life, finishing at 65. He took a year off for himself, but found he felt more tired than he did alive. In an attempt to feel useful and valued, he searched for a solution to his need. He wanted to give to for the greater good and be of ethics that he could agree. At age 66 he entered our doorway, and he knew he had found the right place. He sat and talk to someone about what we do, and he calmly explained his case. He was a quiet man who was a slightly lost and didn’t feel he had much to say. He spoke of losing his wife 10 years ago and felt there was little time left to delay. He travelled our clients around here and there and mowed a lawn or three. People just loved him, and he slotted right in. A family he found was the key. After 13 years given, he became unwell and unable to resume his tasks. He would still come in from time to time and about the clients he would ask. It was a long-hauled battle that his health had dealt him and it then eventually took his life. He passed at 87 in his sleep one night and was now to be re-joined with his wife. He knew it was coming, he knew it was near and he wanted to make some things known. So before he died he had put pen to paper and he shared how his life story had grown. He mentioned of his time volunteering with us and how grateful he was for those days. He wrote of the joy it gave him to support another and he was never in need of praise. For everyone that has walked through our door, their legacy will never disappear. They are the helper. They are the giver. They are appreciated. They are the Volunteer.
