24.01.2022 Members are advised that with the easing of Covid-19 restrictions by the State Government the Club is able to open in a limited capacity. We will re-open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday this week, from 4pm, without meals at this stage. We are restricted to seated table service, and no more than 40 patrons are permitted. Social distancing requirements will need to be observed. Over the next week before reopening, we will be obtaining fresh supplies, completing our Covid-19 safe...ty plan, and setting up the Club to meet our Covid-19 safety obligations regarding layout and signage. We remind members of the need to follow all the social distancing regulations when in attendance at the Club from next Thursday, and when using their boats. Thank you all for your understanding in these unprecedented circumstances. See more

22.01.2022 A beautiful spot of winter weather reminds us what were missing. Bring on the easing of restrictions. Life member Rod Ayton was captured preparing to go out for a crew team meeting on Calypso (background). The variety in members boats on display. All rearing to go.... MYC has provided safe haven for Allan Haddow and his yacht Ophelia (foreground) while he waits to complete his Australian circumnavigation, so far 5 years in the making. https://www.facebook.com/allan.haddow.9 After an uncooperative tide, a Wynyard visitor also waits, tied up on the outside of the pontoon for an appropriate tide to attempt Take Two at slipping over the river. Rod Ayton operated the slip for Dave Burcham and Trevor Atkins when they pulled the Horsham onto the hard and started the maintenance, taking advantage of the enforced quiet time. Volunteers are the life blood of our club.

21.01.2022 This is what its all about! Saturdays final race in the Winter Series had all the elements weve been advocating for members of the Club. Nine yachts raced on another glorious winters day, but the real story was the fact there were 14 boats out enjoying being afloat (15 if you count the Commodore having fun setting the course and watching over the fleet in his RIB). The fleet was diverse, from the Peach familys big Schionning cruising cat Addiction through to Cody Marshal...l on a 14 Hawk cat. In between were the 6-8 metre group having a to-and-fro tussle, and stalwarts Fuzzy Logic, Calypso (the photogenic red one) and Maranne. Aside from the racing competitors, Furmo took a crew of nine merry revellers aboard Signalmaster to Ulverstone for lunch who were still rocking to the (real) music when they tied up back at the Club. Plan Four was cruising with Peter and crew sailing about in the sun off the Bluff, Trevor was again out pottering in Patsy, and Chris King escaped for some time afloat aboard Escapade. Former Commodore Phil Good was spotted in a stealth black RIB lurking about the course photographing the boats through an enormous telephoto lens and he then joined the crews for a catchup in the bar afterwards. Three Leven YC trailer-sailer visitors were welcomed with Precious Pup and Alice showing the locals how its done on the day. (How does that happen? Wheres the handicapper?) Pac Man an Elliot 7 TS recently purchased from Queensland was having its maiden sail down here, and unfortunately had some first outing gremlins still to be sorted. Looked the goods when she got going though! A long embrace with a turning mark by Craig and crew aboard Addictive resulted in an agonisingly slow penalty 360 turn, but Lance breathed a sigh of relief out the front. While participation was the objective, there were still some competitive cries heard across the water - Starboard after several port starters were nailed off the line, and at least one Buoy Room call which was followed by a fluffed headsail raise with two competitors sneaking through. Dont you hate that! The winner was..................everyone a great day, and a great series, out on the water. On the scoreboard courtesy of another handicap win in Saturdays Race 5, Anton and Teresa aboard Precious Pup (blue spinnaker) took out the Winter Series from MYC Committee member Lance Burton and the boys on Fuzzy Logic. Terry Travers Commodore

21.01.2022 Sailing this Saturday 8th August 12pm. All invited. Our final race for the season, you all know the reason We have set the race, where you can set the pace All boats are needed on the water, bring your wife, son & daughter... Will be a cold but clear day, 15-20 knots on the bay Clean bums are not required, full sails will be admired! My attempt at poetry!

21.01.2022 Did You Miss A Glorious Day? With an invite to everyone to just be on the water, even if you werent sailing or racing, those who stayed home missed out. Four starters crossed the line at the mouth of the river for an engaging light weather contest. Rob Sly and Jamieson Marshall sailing the pink Priceline Ulverstone ran the line and crossed first past Terry Travers and Angela Marshall who were officiating in the RIB. Lance Burton slowly wound up Fuzzy Logic to take the lead h...e never relinquished (Clancy had taken a dive to give the bum a clean ) while Andrew Ayton and the crew on Calypso were steadily making their way to the line. Thats 6 of our 11 committee members out on the water. Great to see. But it was visiting Leven YC sailors Anthony Bezemer and Teresa Badrock who dominated on the little Waller TS Precious Pup. With an efficient kite set and determined concentration they were second to the turning mark (the RIB on station off Wrights Island). Rob on the pink boat called buoy room and snuck around, but the Pup crew nailed the gybe and took back their position. It was a duel to the finish line with Priceline only just prevailing on the water by a minute. The Calypso crew persisted to the end making the most of the glorious weather. On handicap it was the visitors on Precious Pup, followed by Fuzzy Logic, Priceline Ulverstone and Calypso. The story doesnt end with the sailors. Also enjoying time on the water were Angela and Terry T blasting up and down the course on the RIB, Ronsley and Terry H taking pictures from the runabout, Dave Burcham out for a solo jaunt on Doubloon, and Furmo imitating a Somali pirate rounding up the yachts on Larry the Longboat. When the club next heads out, why not bring whatever boat you have and participate being on the water with friends which includes our valued visitors. See more

20.01.2022 Saturday will be busy! At 9am sail training kicks off for the second week, and for those interested there is the option to also try keelboat sailing in the afternoon. Check out the weather today in these photos. Lance took the opportunity for a scrub, with bubbles seen coming up from under the keel. A good sailing breeze of 13 knots is forecast for Saturday. And mark next Thursday 26th Nov in your diary we’re having a New Members and Christmas function at the Club - a light (Covid-safe) meal with entertainment by the talented Justine Barber. Families are especially invited. Let’s meet and mingle. Details to follow. See more

16.01.2022 A peaceful morning sight as the Melbourne to Devonport Yacht Race entrants rest up before heading back to Melbourne - a far cry from the 45 knot blow they experienced during the race down. The last competitor - the apply named Y Knot - finished at 10.15 last night. Handicap winner was the fleet's smallest boat, the 33 foot Jeanneau RMS Cole Walker (tied up on the left of the marina). Jade Cole and Barney Walker are training regularly in an effort to be selected as the Australian athletes to contest the Olympic mixed crew offshore sailing event in the Mediterranean in three years time. We wish them success in their quest. Fun fact - There are two double quarter berths in this small race boat.

12.01.2022 Final Results for the Cock of the Mersey Race 2020 Apologies for any misspellings. Thankyou to all competitors.

12.01.2022 Easing of Covid-19 restrictions and the sailors are out in force with no wind to speak of but a load of sunshine which made for a very enjoyable race/day.

12.01.2022 Remnants of a Storm cell. Where Did That Come From? Despite the completion of the Mersey Yacht Club Winter Series, three stalwarts decided another scratch race was the order of the day on Saturday. Principal Race Officer (PRO) Rob Sly got the stern chaser contest underway from the mouth of the river on time (newsworthy apparently). The three yachts set off at staggered times sailing west. Robs Maranne left first, chased by Calypso until Lance and crew on Fuzzy Logic had o...vertaken Maranne. That was the trigger for them all to turn around, racing back to the Mersey as this ominous cloud formation rushed over the horizon. Andrew on Calypso reported the black storm cell produced sudden hail with the wind strength increasing dramatically from 12 to more than 30 knots for the maybe ten minutes the tempest lasted. On the right of the picture you can just make out our PRO (Rob) battling on with full sail. All crew returned safely with stories to tell. Meanwhile Furmo did another Ulverstone cafe run with a heap of bodies on board. Great hospitality. Great boat for it. Pic credit: Andrew Ayton

12.01.2022 Saturday’s activities showcased sailing in Devonport at it’s finest. What a spectacle - the rigging lawns and pontoons in front of the Club were crowded with boats and sailors getting ready on a glorious day with a 15 knot sailing breeze. (And in amongst this hive of activity our Dragons Abreast boat paddling ladies had a great morning as well.) Training for juniors and adults in the morning, a junior race in the river before lunch, briefing and a ‘sav’ at the bar, then 21 ya...chts of all description from along the coast competing in the Cock of the Mersey Race. The BBQ and presentation afterwards had the place buzzing with conversation. Thank you to the visitors for putting on such a spectacle, and the locals for the efforts in putting in the work. And the winner is..Mike Darby from Wynyard YC. (Full results will be posted separately shortly.) Our volunteers all of you including the ‘quiet achievers’ are appreciated thank you. A special shout out this week to our Treasurer Angela Marshall (who became a full-blooded dinghy sailor turtle on the way back in from the race course) and her children Cody, Jamieson, Sam and Maddison who put in two big days of effort. Family involvement at our Club is so vital to our recent growth. Hope to see you all out on the water again soon. See more

09.01.2022 THANK YOU! Our club volunteers put in a fantastic effort over the last couple of days. I couldn't photograph them all, nor catch the ones outside or on the committee boat day and night. From those who came as requested or just turned up, through to those who turned up both days to help out - we appreciate all your efforts. At their awards presentation dinner, and in private conversations, the visitors from ORCV were effusive in their praise of the hospitality, assistance and ...food () received here at Mersey YC. On behalf of all members I thank those who contributed in any way to the finishing events of the Melbourne to Devonport Yacht Race. Your donated time has yet again raised the profile of our club - and earned us some valuable income. You should all be proud. Here's a few snaps of some more of our volunteers. Regards Terry Travers. 09.01.2022 Take Two Afloat Take Two Aground Whilst the day was grey and dull, the enthusiasm was bright amongst the crew. At noon, four starters crossed the start line in the turning basin for the third winter series race, mainly aided by the outgoing tide and a light fickle south-easter. By mid river a northerly was building with Fuzzy Logic taking first advantage to set the pace. But after just one lap the departing MV Goliath took over the race course and a restart for take two w...as decided. In a steadier breeze the restart was going well.....well except for Rob and Mike on Maranne who managed to touch bottom going downwind near the Victoria Parade green navigation mark yes - the one that emerges at low tide. Once bitten but not shy, their take two effort while beating up the opposite shore was even better, a serious stick in the mud, occurring aptly at Wreck Beach near the sunken dredge. This grounding was captured by Kim Burton showing just how much water was available mid river, and how little there was in close. Starting the motor and engaging reverse would not free the keel, so it took some manoeuvring for Maranne to finally break free, recording a DNF for the motoring effort. To their credit Rob and Mike faced up to the banter in the bar afterwards, although the whole story took some prising out. Honours on the day went to Lance and Kim Burton on Fuzzy Logic, followed by the Ayton crew on Calypso, then the most welcome visitor Precious Pup from Ulverstone with Anton bringing two crew across for this weeks race. Rob will announce on Facebook when the conditions are suitable for the next race very soon. See more

08.01.2022 Going, going, almost gone. Thanks to Trevor and his trusty chainsaw, help from Rod, and a big group at Saturdays working bee, the abandoned plywood boat eyesore has been almost cut up and partially taken to the tip. The working bee also started the spring clean the club needs - thanks Rob for getting things underway on this.... We appreciate everyone who has been assisting in these works. There will be more to come. Watch this space.

08.01.2022 WANTED more toes in the water! A race has been organised for Saturday 11th July. Racing will commence at 12 noon at the mouth of the Mersey River and heading East. Everyone is welcome to experience the wind in your sails or the power of your cruiser. ... Hope to see you out on the water. Angelas Forecast: Cloudy day, 13degrees, 6-10 knots Further information call the Vice Commodore, Rob Sly 0457 815 440

07.01.2022 Winter at its best Two Leven YC visitors boosted the fleet to seven yachts for the 4th Race of the MYC Winter Series. After a light start for the first triangle the breeze built to about 5 knots making for a very pleasant day on the water. Fuzzy Logic got the gun with Priceline Ulverstone belying her 24 to cross second and take 3rd on handicap. But overall honours for the day went to the visitors from LYC - Farr 6000 Katie 1st with Precious Pup second. It was a glorious day on the water for everyone Terry and Angela zipping about on the RIB, Trevor out on Patsy, Ronsley and Terry taking a heap of photos from the runabout, and John even had a short run in Highlander, just to confirm she needs a bottom clean . Stay tuned for the next race.

04.01.2022 To all our Mersey Yacht Club members, You will likely have seen the latest Corona virus health directive from the Government mandating that from midday today all licensed clubs must close. We will be complying with this directive and accordingly the club building will not be opened. External access to the laundry, and toilet facilities downstairs, will still be available.... We want to assure you all that whilst this is a change in the way we operate in the short term, the Club will still be here ready to open again as soon as we are allowed. In the meantime other activities around the Club are not affected, so as long as we follow the social distancing and hygiene directives, we can still work on and enjoy our boats, and the outdoor facilities of the Club. Please be sensible in doing so and stay up to date with the latest Health Department directives. There is a link to the latest State Government Corona Virus Advice at the bottom of this update. In the last few months we have been working extensively on our financial position and we want to assure all members that we have seen improvement from the strategies we have embraced, and will continue to work towards further improvement, and the ability to provide more services and benefits to Club members. We have cash reserves should we need to call upon them. We are working with our manager and staff to mitigate, as far as possible, the effects on the Club of this unprecedented viral pandemic. There is good news amongst the understandable concerns and we will provide a regular newsletter shortly with more generalised information. 03.01.2022 Sail Training What a problem to have! From responses to our announcement regarding the commencement of sail training we were expecting about 4-5 attendees last Saturday morning. We had 12! Word is getting around. A nice sailing breeze across the river made for a practical (and at times entertaining) session. We had to hastily reorganise the boats available, but thanks to the volunteer coaches and assistants we managed to get everyone on the water after instruction and briefin...g from Tim Grant. True, we had to use the RIBs to shepherd a few wayward dinghies back to the fold, and one dinghy took on more water than it should, but there's always next week to practice again. We will make changes to the administration to accommodate the keen new sailors. It was heartening to hear the enthusiastic comments from new sailors after the session. Thanks to all who came to sail or assist. If you plan to come and learn, please make known to us what you hope to achieve so we can meet your needs. There are dinghies as well as keel boats where newcomers are welcome. See more

02.01.2022 Meet the ABC's latest photographer - MYC's very own Terry Hill. For those who missed it, Terry's work was on display during the ABC TV News last Monday night. As the reporters "suddenly" discovered the only interstate yacht race this summer - the Melbourne to Devonport Yacht Race - they realised they had no photographer on the ground. With the winner only 90 minutes from the line, they frantically sought a professional photographer to no avail. We put Terry Hill up to them as... an option and he volunteered to go out at short notice on the Bailey with Tony. The shots he sent back were snapped up - they commented; "we didn't expect that quality" - and they appeared in the media. They asked for any more he had and we sent through a dozen or more. You can see other examples on the ORCV Facebook page, and if you were in the club after the race, the slide show on the wall was Terry's work. (Remember your media start Terry when they snap you up for the America's Cup coverage soon ) If you missed the TV news clip it starts at 25:04 on this link. https://iview.abc.net.au/video/NU2003T311S00 Thanks for your contribution Terry. Great promotion for Devonport and the MYC.

01.01.2022 Memories of a glorious winters day at MYC! EVERYONE IS INVITED! We have regular opportunities to get out on the water with any floating vessel.
