06.01.2022 As we start to sort through the stallions and confirm our breeding plans for 2020 remember to have your mare tested for the Overo Lethal White Gene (OLWS). It... does'nt matter what breed she is... it is better to be safe than sorry. Unless you test you will not know ... If your mare carries one copy of the Lethal White Gene (n/O) then you need to really consider if you wish to risk your mare, the foal and in some situations your reputation. Once you have narrowed down your stallion selection ring and ask the stallion owner for his OLWS status. Is he Negative or Positive? Ask for a copy of the genetic test - don't just assume that a verbal answer is correct - as some may not have tested but assume! Registered Breed Studs should have been tested - OLWS is carried now in so many breeds so please don't think this is just a Paint Horse concern. Solid coloured horses can and will carry OLWS and the only way to tell is by testing. Thoroughbreds, Standardbreds, clydesdales, riding ponies, mini's Shetlands, welsh, Gypsy Cobs you name it. The stallion you choose may only be registered as a Sport Horse, Pinto, Dilute etc etc the risk is out there now as their are so many derivatives/cross breeds. It is your mare, your foal, your money and you and your mares mental health you need to protect. Loosing a foal no matter what the circumstances is absolutely devastating but to loose a foal that 'could have been prevented in the first place is just so not necessary!
