24.01.2022 Eastern Europe: Rusalki Often translated as "mermaid," the Rusalki are water nymphs of Slavic mythology. While initially regarded as benevolent spirits of fertility and agriculture, Rusalki gained a more sinister description in the 1800s. They were believed to be the ghosts of women who died violent deaths by drowning. In their anger and sorrow, the Rusalki now lured men and children to their watery graves.... The concept of rusalki originated from a Slavic pagan tradition where the young women were symbols of fertility. These nymphs did not interfere too much with human life and mainly served to provide life-giving moisture to the fields and forests every spring when they came ashore to dance in the spring moonlight. The water spirits were believed to help crops grow plentifully and so were generally treated with respect. In the modern era, a large mythos mostly unrelated to fertility has sprung up around the beguiling young women of the water. By the 19th century, the main objective of a rusalka had transformed into harassing the human population.

21.01.2022 Near Landscrona, on the Danish coast, three sailors in a boat saw something floating. On approaching it, it sank, then arose, and swam waist-deep. It appeared like an old man, with broad shoulders, small head, deep sunken eyes, thin face, black beard and hair, with fish-like extremities. A minister, Peter Angelí, of Sundmœr parish, told the bishop that he saw a merman lying on the strand dead. It was about six feet long, dark gray in color, with the lower part like a fish, a...nd a tail like a porpoise, a man’s face, and arms joined by membranes to the body. Mermaids, known as maremind in Danish have played in myths and legends and are believed to be the folklore behind Hans ChristianAndersen's "The Little Mermaid" a story of a mermaid who falls in love with a prince in a passing ship; the mermaid takes on human form in order to gain a human soul and be close to the prince, but although constantly near him, she cannot speak. When the prince marries a human princess, the mermaid's heart is broken.
21.01.2022 Tip Tuesday Water and energy saving tip! Only fill up your kettle with how much boiling water you will use. You'll save electricity, and filling and waiting time Boiling enough water for one cup is almost instant!... If you plan to have a few hot drinks, boil extra and pour it into a Thermos flask. Have too much in the kettle already? Before boiling, pour some into your water bottle or onto a plant
20.01.2022 Susulu: Turkish Mermaid. Susulus appear in Turkic folklore as unlucky omens, both foretelling disaster and provoking it like mermaids. Susulus have also been described as able to swim up rivers to freshwater lakes. They are usually the ghosts of young women who died a violent or untimely death. ... Susulus are said to inhabit lakes and rivers. They appear as beautiful young women with long green hair and pale skin, suggesting a connection with floating weeds and days spent underwater in faint sunlight. They can be seen after dark, dancing together under the moon and calling out to young men by name, luring them to the water and drowning them.

Starfish under the Mangrove trees Australia’s mangroves and saltmarshes are ecologically important ecosystems that link the land and sea, providing productive habitats for a range of species, including migratory shorebirds, fish, and crustaceans... They are also important because they: act as filters for nutrients and sediments, reduce erosion and maintain water qualityprovide protection from storms and cyclones act as a carbon sink.

02.01.2022 On the fifth day of Fishmas my true love gave to me Five Blue Ringed Octopi Four seabirds Three Sea Hens... 2 Green Sea Turtles And a Starfish under the Mangrove trees Native to the Pacific Ocean, the blue-ringed octopus can be found in the soft, sandy bottom of shallow tide pools and coral reefs. When not seeking food or a mate, blue-ringed octopuses often hide in crevices, shells or marine debris. If you catch them outside of their cozy hiding spots, it’s easy to see how the animal gets its name: when threatened, bright blue rings appear all over its body as a warning signal to potential predators. Its venom is 1,000 times more powerful than cyanide, and this golf-ball sized powerhouse packs enough venom to kill 26 humans within minutes. It’s no surprise that it’s recognized as one of the most dangerous animals in the ocean.

Cyclopterus lumpus, known in Europe as sea hen or hen fish because the male guards and cares for the eggs, without eating, until they hatch in about six or seven weeks. This fish is found in the Arctic and on both sides of the North Atlantic.
