24.01.2022 Hi everyone! We hope you are enjoying a little more freedom and can come down to the beach to enjoy this beautiful weather! Our Editor, Dr Toni Roberts, has been working hard with local community members to bring together this beautiful publication.... MESAC's Coastal Connections - A Nature Lover's Journal We have created this journal with the aim of fostering deeper connections with marine and coastal areas, and the flora and fauna that inhabit it. Many community members have contributed to its pages artists, photographers, scientists, snorkelers and walkers all of whom appreciate the wonders of coastal and marine environments. We hope that using this journal may help to cultivate closer attention to the natural environment, its seasonal changes and complex inter-relationships. Regular observation can encourage love and guardianship of our precious coastal environments that survive, and in some areas thrive, despite the impacts of proximity to urban areas. This beautiful home-grown journal makes a stunning gift for all occasions, particularly Christmas and the forthcoming summer season. What could be a more perfect gift! $20 plus postage. See MESAC website for more details and to order. http://mesac.org.au/newsletters-mesac/ Please feel free to share with colleagues, friends and family!

24.01.2022 We’ve had numerous reports of a southern right whale close to shore in Edithvale and later today in Beaumaris. Our research team was out on the water today and ...we remind people not to approach whales within 200m if you’re on a boat, and 300m on a JetSki. Unfortunately we have also received notification of drone footage which breaches the regulations of remaining over 500m vertical distance away from whales. Here at MMF, we choose not to post actual locations and also not promote footage collected whilst breaching regulations. These amazing animals are protected and distances should be respected, this way we can all enjoy these amazing whales in our watery backyard safely - Dr Kate See more

20.01.2022 Sharks play a critical ecological role on coral reefs, and are an important part of the economy of many island nations as a key attraction for reef tourism. But... the recent Global FinPrint study found they are virtually absent from 20% of reefs around the world. 18.01.2022 BREAKING: The South Australian Parliament has just passed historic new laws that will ban killer single-use plastics, starting in early 2021! It's a historic wi...n for our turtles, whales and seabirds. The laws ban: Single-use plastic cutlery Single-use plastic straws Single-use plastic drink stirrers 12 months after the ban starts, expanded polystyrene cups, bowls, plates and oxo-degradable plastics will also be banned. We congratulate David Speirs MP and the SA Government for cementing SA's place as Australia's leader in the fight against plastic, as the very first state to ban these plastic items. 15.01.2022 Boats and Fishing inside Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary this evening. There were hundreds of fishermen in boats at the edge of the sanctuary and at least 20 well inside the border right in front of me. So there would have been many more illegally fishing if I covered the whole 3 kms of the sanctuary border. We find this particularly disturbing as we are thousands of volunteers who have cared for this sanctuary environment over the last 17 years. We work day and night to keep... the environment free from all the rubbish that visitors discard here and that are washed down by storm water drains. It is a sanctuary where all marine life is protected and the animals are supposed to be left alone and to regenerate and care for their young. We swim all year round and run snorkelling groups to enjoy the sanctuary, as well as school groups and all sorts of educational exhibitions, workshops and walks to engender the love, care and protection of this environment and sanctuary. If anyone sees this again, please take photos and call 133 474 and speak to the Fisheries Duty Officer letting them know the time and place, and registration numbers ion boats if you can see them. This this fragrant disregard for the law and the environment needs to stop. Please help us.

12.01.2022 This week is SeaWeek, a national campaign run by the Australian Association for Environmental Education Inc. to raise awareness of the importance of the sea and all the amazing animals that live within! The theme for 2020 is 'The sea supports a great diversity of life and ecosystems', which couldn't be more true in Australia. We have the third largest marine territory, and are one of the most richly biodiverse developed countries in the world, with many species being endemic ...to Australian waters. Not only are our marine environments rich in diversity, they provide food, recreation and jobs for many people around our country. In addition, the dense kelp forests that skirt around the southern border of Australia, from WA to Northern NSW, create a large carbon sink and could help us in the battle against climate change. How will you be celebrating SeaWeek this week? #SeaWeek2020 #marinediversity #bluecarbon #marineeducation #marinemammalfoundation #marinelitterproject

12.01.2022 Nowhere, it seems, is immune from plastic pollution: plastic has been reported in the high Arctic oceans, in the sea ice around Antarctica and even in the world’s deepest waters of the Mariana Trench. It is up to 35 times more than the estimated weight of plastic pollution on the ocean’s surface. I think this is more than enough evidence to ban plastic on all levels as fast as possible across the globe. Worldwide cooperation is needed.

11.01.2022 Through a generous founding gift from Edward O. Wilson, Faculty-Curator Emeritus and University Research Professor Emeritus, and with support from additional donors, the Museum of Comparative Zoology (MCZ) at Harvard University has established the E.O. Wilson Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. This program supports postdoctoral researchers at MCZ to pursue the discovery and formal taxonomic description of Earth’s animal species. Fellows will work under the supervision of one or more MCZ faculty-curators, who will provide office space, access to lab facilities, and necessary research support. The program aims to achieve broad taxonomic coverage and is not restricted to any particular taxon. At this time, the selection of fellows will give priority to candidates who work on living species. Apply by 30 Sep 2020!

11.01.2022 In Victoria we are so incredibly privileged to be able to see not only dolphins in our watery backyards, but whales too! Victoria’s dolphins include our own Burrunan dolphins, short-beaked common dolphins (pictured here), and if you’re offshore in the open ocean, common bottlenose dolphins. We are also lucky enough around this time of year to see migratory humpback whales and southern right whales inside Port Phillip Bay, as well as (albeit rarely) killer whales (or orca) along the east coast of Victoria. This #WorldWhaleandDolphinDay we celebrate our amazing whale and dolphin diversity #whaleanddolphinconservation #burrunandolphin #humpbackwhale #southernrightwhale #bluewhale #marinemammalfoundation #marvelousmarinemammals #endangeredspecies #whale #dolphin #conservation

09.01.2022 At this time of year when we are all in the water, it is good to think about our fellow aquatic friends, sponges, seaweeds and algae, and what is going into their environment. Research tells us that 4,000 to 6,000 tons of sunscreen enters reef areas annually. Unfortunately this does not spread out quickly or evenly over the entire ocean, but concentrates on popular tourist sites. It is estimated that 90% of snorkelling/diving tourists are concentrated on 10% of the world’s ...reefs. This means that our most popular reefs, such as those in our marine parks, are exposed to the majority of sunscreens. Read this quick article and educate yourself so we can all buy the right thing and help our marine protected areas and reefs. 09.01.2022 Please sign this petition. The incredible mass migration of spider crabs has attracted appalling practices of baited traps and nets that affect not only the crabs but the marine environment more generally. A no take period would be a great measure to protect this spectacular migration event. Just enter your details. That’s all you need to do. And watch the video by my lovely snorkeling pal Julie Everett if you like! Thanks.

07.01.2022 Nice to see after strong community pressure and working together, we helped to mobilise this campaign and get strong action regarding illegal fishing in our beautiful Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary and other areas around Port Phillip Bay. 03.01.2022 The giant spider crab aggregations in Port Phillip and throughout Victoria are an amazing natural phenomenon. They are a popular species for many recreational f...ishers, and are a must-see yearly event for divers and tourists. In an Australian first, our scientists, with help from scuba divers, have tagged 15 giant spider crabs off Blairgowrie with specialised satellite tags to track their movements! During the cooler months, these crabs gather by the thousands to moult in shallow waters, becoming more accessible to the public when near popular piers in Port Phillip. After moulting, the crabs move on to a solitary life and aren’t seen again until the following year. Exactly where they disappear to is currently unknown. It’s important that we understand exactly where the spider crabs go after moulting. That way, we can determine whether the crabs we see in Port Phillip are connected or separate to the rest of the spider crab population distributed across the Victorian coastline. Cue the satellite tags! A mix of male and female newly moulted spider crabs have now been tagged so we can gain a better understanding of where they go. Although the tags look large and buoyant, they won’t impact crab movement or behaviour. Each tag has been programmed to be released from a crab, float to the surface, link with satellites and upload valuable movement data. Over the next 15 weeks, one tag will be released from a different crab each week. This is a trial study, so if successful, we will expand this research into next year. You can find out more about this study and how YOU can contribute through citizen science and a survey here: https://vfa.vic.gov.au/science-in-fisheries/spidercrabs Kina Diving RedBoats.com.au Spider Crabs Melbourne
