25.01.2022 Great news we’ve extended the 80c per work hour shortcut method for claiming working-from-home expenses until 30 September 2020! With everything going on... right now, 12 months may seem a world away but, it’s important to keep good records now to make life easier when you lodge your tax return next year. For more info on claiming working-from-home expenses, visit www.ato.gov.au//deductions-you-can-c/home-office-expenses/

23.01.2022 The case of the dodgy camper: We recently investigated an electrician whose tax return had some fishy claims... a camping guide, portable fridge, jerry can, s...prinkler, BBQ wipes, shovels, soft drink and a picnic rug He said his boss needed him to travel and camp for work, but when we spoke to his employer they confirmed that wasn’t the case. Since the sparkie didn’t have any genuine expenses and knowingly misrepresented his circumstances, we knocked back the claims and applied a penalty. Steer clear of the dodgy deductions trap. Check out our info on what you can claim at www.ato.gov.au//Income-and-deduc/Deductions-you-can-claim/ or talk to a registered tax agent.

12.01.2022 Could your ‘tax plan’ actually be a tax avoidance scheme? Don’t fall prey to untrustworthy tax planners or advisors - you could actually be cheating on your tax.... If you’re unsure, talk to a trusted professional (or us!) to make sure you're doing the right thing and avoid potential penalties. Learn more at www.ato.gov.au/General/Tax-planning/

08.01.2022 Keep an eye on your myGov inbox this tax time! Most people will be accessing their income statement (previously called a ‘payment summary’) through our online... services in myGov. If your myGov account is linked to our online services, we’ll let you know once your employer has made your income statement ‘tax ready’ - then, it can be used to do your tax return. Remember, many employers have until 31 July to do this. Lodge through an agent? No problem. Get in touch with them as usual they’ll have access to this info too. Find more info at www.ato.gov.au//Working-as/Accessing-your-payment-summary/

03.01.2022 Approached by someone offering unusually cheap tax services or promising refunds that are too good to be true? Beware of unregistered preparers! Remember, only... a registered tax agent can charge a fee to prepare and lodge your tax return. Today an unregistered preparer from Sydney received a criminal conviction for dishonestly obtaining a financial advantage. Charging a $100 fee, he used the personal myGov credentials of 1,098 individuals to lodge tax returns on their behalf, redirecting some of the refunds into his own bank account.
