25.01.2022 Detectorist life - cleaning out your car (after ignoring it for a few years!) and finding more obsolete currency then new stuff...

25.01.2022 Got a good signal on the weekend around the base of a big ol tree. Well i thought it was. Turns out the signal was IN the tree. I left it there.

24.01.2022 Havent been out in the last few weeks so heres a mid-week funny!

24.01.2022 Currently out western QLD touring with the family. With a non-detecting wife and two young kids ive struggled to find a few minutes to detect but got a pass to take my boy out to and old pub site while the wife and daughter waited in the car. Found a few goodies before we were reigned in. Also got myself a commonwealth bank money box at the dump.

24.01.2022 Today im searching for a school site that operated 1890s - 1920s. My only clues being a line drawing from a ex-student, a parish map and the landowners knowledge.

23.01.2022 Back out swingin’ with a successful ring recovery for a family this afternoon.

23.01.2022 Having a top morning out here on the farm, and this little beauty just saw the light of day in ? years? Im not quite sure what it is. Its very small and it doesnt look like theres a watch face. There is some great detail in the chain links though. No visable hallmarks.

22.01.2022 Yesterday afternoon i had a time to kill before other commitments in town. I havent had a chance to get out for a dig for a while now with work and family commitments, but had to go up to a friends property to drop some stuff off to him. On this property used to be most of an old town, of which i’ve wrote about here before, and has (and continues) to give up its treasures from the ghosts of the past. Yesterday i poked into the old school site to snap a quick pic with an old... photo of the school house. From this school site in particular ive recovered many coins and relics that had been lost over the years the schoolhouse was used as both the school and local meeting place. Holding banquets, functions, celebrations and general business made it a busy little site. The items recovered were indicative of the time and population. Items like a rising sun, 1919 victory medal and a red cross war fundraising medal might be from the welcome home dances held across the country when the local soldiers returned from overseas. The coins found, ranging from the late 1800s through to the 40s possibly from all the bake sales and other fundraising efforts for the community. Rings and decortive pendants lost throughout the years maybe during a kids game or a dance. And the 30 something clothing buttons, well it was a school ground after all, maybe lost during a game of football or kids playing rough. Of course we can only guess how these items got there, through research, and getting the coil to the soil on these old sites. The voices of the past who dropped these items are most likely no longer around, just left with the ghosts of time. Most of the items went back to the owner of the property who takes a lot of pride in the history of his little town. See more

22.01.2022 Finished work this morning and went for a quick drive to a site id be researching just out of town. A homestead and a few other structures built in the early 19...00s and felt into disuse by the 60s. A perfect example of the bush reclaiming what human had created. Very little eveidence of anything ever been here, and with only an old aerial photo to help give me an idea of where i was. I managed to scout the extrrnal house yard fencing and the outer yard fencing, and found the original front retaining wall and steps leading to the front entrance of the house. Unfortunately it was almost undetectable with trees, bush, grass and those big ugly spiders with steel-cable webs waiting to wrap up any one foolish enough to walk around with there eyes on the ground. For my efforts i got a dirty old penny and a button as well as a few odds and ends - a file, a few jar lids, and some old rusty nails. A few broken bottles and smashed insulators towards the back of the property might be giving away a dump site, but i ran out of time and had to get home. Another time. 1st Photo : steps to front entrance of house 2nd: retaining wall 3rd: House site 4th: house yard corner post 5th: bloody spiders everywhere!

21.01.2022 Its been a long time between drinks. With life returning to a bit of normality, hopefully ill get back out chasing some more coins and relics soon. Heres a nice ‘31 shilling for my first target of a spare 45min hint this afternoon!

21.01.2022 Yesterday afternoon i had a couple of hours at a permission site in town after work and managed a few goodies. Im not actually sure if the penny is a 1951 but it seems i dig more of that year then anything else so its a safe bet! Something i dont do often is include a pic of the trash i remove while finding the desireable targets, so heres a glimpse into the bycatch of dirt-fishing! All gone to be disposed of properly.

19.01.2022 For the first dig of the year i snuck out to a local bayside park that always does alright by me. A few bucks and a 38 3p, and my nemesis the brown buggers. On the way back to car netted a 51 roo. Back for breakfast and a few hours later took the kids for a swim. I also took the detector for a swim and found a silver chain thats been down there a while in about knee deep water.

19.01.2022 One of my favourite past-times is reading through these old papers while researching detecting sites. Sometimes you find a pearler of info, a forgotten piece of the past. And occasionally you find something like this. ... Nothing sells dentist work better then a scary clown with fangs. The Gympie Times and Mary River Mining Gazette, 20/08/1901.

16.01.2022 Last sunday we did a quick trip to the beach to visit mily for mothers day. Of course i brought the detector along (its part of the family) and we did iur own walk along the foreshore.

15.01.2022 Two rising suns this morning. It doesnt get much better then this. Happy sunday all.

14.01.2022 Last weekend Neil and I went looking for a couple of houses in the bush that existed from the 20s - 50s. It was a hard slog with the bush so dense in places we are crawling through and trying to swing the detector in any open clearing we can find. We came across enough to make another trip back worthwhile.

14.01.2022 Met up with Josh tonight for a quick hunt around one of my favourite gympie sites. Unfortunatley the cool old boy scout badge/button got chomped by a mower before i got to it - the damage to the 6d though was all my fault :(

13.01.2022 On sunday morning i ventured to a new property i had been granted access to. The original family held this property from the late 1800s through to the early 2000s when the current family moved in, and several of the original family members are interred there. A few of the structures still remain, and ill slowly work my way through them to see what i can uncover.

12.01.2022 Up and at them early sunday morning - kind of. A couple of hours at the farm uncovering more goodies from yesteryear. I managed to find where the hills hoist used to stand with a few coins both new and old lying around a small area. A couple of pocket watches, a cool mity-mite toy gun, and the rising sun was the cream on top. Talking about cream, the cream tag saying full, factory gympie probably made a few trips to and from the butter factory back in the day. My detecting hours are getting limited now with the sun coming up later and the family sports starting to kick back in again post-covid, and i still have so much of this property to cover - who knows what else is out there.

12.01.2022 Drove up Bundy way this morning to catch up with some of the great people from the Metal Detcting Wide Bay facebook group on an organised dig. The site was originally planned to be quite a large township with all the things a bustling new riverfront town needed - wharf, school, police station, market grounds, pubs, railway workshops and foundrys, saw mill and a sugar mill, hospital, courthouse etc, but a few floods washed the wharves away in the towns early days and it was proposed to build elsewhere. The only buildings that eventually were built were a pub, railway station and a few residences built to service the railway. Eventually these too disapeared and all thats left above ground these days is a few concrete slabs and a couple of trains passing every now and then.

11.01.2022 Lifes been getting in the way of a good scratch in the soil lately but i managed to sneak out for two quick digs in the last week. The first being at a secret spot of mine in brisbane. Now a park, there is very little there that gives away it was once the location of one of the first farmhouse in the area. I visit everytime im down that way and always manage to find something new, previous finds including coin, jewellery, and bottles from the late 1800s. Each time mapping o...ut a little more of the layout of the house and yards. This time i think i found the laundry, as i managed to find a handful of buttons within a small area. Most of them are Charles Gilbert, Brisbane,(https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/3697705) and a few others are unmarked, save for a wreath or rope. Unfortunately i had to leave not long after finding these, but i know there is more history there for next time. See more

10.01.2022 We’re heading off next week for our third attempt at a family holiday this year (the first two tries were COVID- failures) so ive been forced by the wife to clean out the car. This finds sheet is the collective of my only two hunts this month. Almost two weeks out west coming up though so we’ll see what can be uncovered while on the road!

09.01.2022 Hello little thrip, welcome to 2020.

09.01.2022 Some more goodies from the farm unearthed this morning. There used to be a huge old homestead here, before it was relocated a few years back. Running the 6in coil around lumps of grass and in the old garden beds has been paying off. The owner has said he would slash the area the house stood for me so i can get in there which should be great. Find of the day was this gold, or plated, (not sure) bracelet thing? Its tiny, and i orinally thought it was a watch but it has no key or adjustment for time.

08.01.2022 Still homeless while waiting for house settlement and currently boarding with family on the coast, but commuting to work in Gympie-town each day so havent had a lot of time for detecting. But i have managed to sneak in a few small hunts, 30min here, 45min there. Heres the results of three or four quick detects in the region over the last few weeks. I’m heading out for a longer dig tomorrow so we’ll see how that goes!

07.01.2022 Have i ever told you about the old dip? He said to me over a beer after my last visit. My father used to help them over there when he was a lad, they used to camp down there on the way through Nah mate, where was it? I asked. Dunno, but the dip used to be near the creek, and the camp had to be close. Somewhere on that hill. So early saturday morning off to that hill i went, and massively underestimated what an area that hill actually was. Also underestimated the len...gth of the grass, rats tail and cobbler pegs that covered that hill. I started in the area of where the old dip was, long removed in the name of environmental protection, and unfortunately the only way was up from there - i couldnt get closer to the creek as the grass was 6ft high and just a inpenetrable wall, and who knows whats in there let alone being able to swing the detector. So uphill i went, dodging clumps of grass, swinging in any open area i could swing a machine, zig zagging around hoping to cover as much ground as possible and avoid the bloody cobblers pegs that i was already covered in. I occasionally stumbled across a good target, and managed to find a few things to put in the finds bag, and helped clean the hill up by bringing a fair bit of lead and iron trash home with me. All the finds were pretty spread out though, nothing really indicative of a camp but more of human foot traffic over the last 100years. So 4hrs and eleventy-million cobblers pegs later i headed for home, a few finds in the bag, and on the way home started planning my attack for next time. Maybe the other hill...

05.01.2022 The results of my sunday session dig around home. Helping clean up the bay piece by piece!

05.01.2022 More reconnaisance detecting this morning for a couple of hours. Trying to find a couple of house sites in reclaimed forest.

05.01.2022 I love finding rising suns. This kind of just scrapes into that category!

04.01.2022 Fitst coin for 2021 is a 1938 3d. Happy new year everyone.

04.01.2022 Todays dig was the ugly part of detecting. 3 hours looking for the site of an old school (1890- 1920s) based on a 20yr old sketch by a ex-student and some parish maps. No real joy so i didnt bother drawing it up, but ill put it in the memory bank as another spot worth a shot with a bit more research. Anyway, it was a nice morning for a walk.

04.01.2022 I havent been out much lately, with selling a house, kids sports and more work then I want or need! but got a new machine today to add to the collection. This o...ne is a bit more biased towards the yellow stuff then my nox so look forward to getting out and using it. Ive been pretty impressed with my sons simplex so decided on the nokta-makro over the gm1000. See more
