23.01.2022 Mistakes to Avoid When Exercising: Part 2 . Pull the belly button towards the spine has become a popular cue in the fitness world in order to activate the co...re . It gained popularity as a way to feel the activation of the transverse abdominis which is the corset-like muscle that wraps around the abdominal region and helps in stabilizing the trunk and spine. This activation is crucial for safety and power in activity, however the cue is often misinterpreted . What typical occurs with this cue is a sucking in action which tilts the pelvis out of neutral and the spine into flexion, causing decreases stability of the spinal segments and energy leaks throughout the body . Put this under load and now we really have a problem . Loaded spine + poor stability = OUCH .
