11.01.2022 Have You Heard Of Toxoplasma Infection? Toxoplasma gondii, is one pathogen that infects the brain and can cause encephalitis and seizures. Persistent infection ...by this parasite is also associated with behavioural alterations and an increased risk for developing psychiatric illness, including schizophrenia. When a person becomes infected with T. gondii, the parasite forms cysts that can affect almost any part of the body often your brain and muscle tissue of different organs, including the heart. If you're generally healthy, your immune system keeps the parasites in check. In Australia, 20-40% of women of childbearing age have evidence of previous infection. Commonly passed to humans via exposure to farm animals, infected cat litter, or undercooked meat, the parasitic infection causes unnoticeable or mild, to flu-like symptoms in most healthy people, but for a small number of patients, these microscopic parasites hunker down inside of neurons, causing signalling errors that can result in seizures, personality and mood disorders, vision changes, and even schizophrenia. The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 40 million Americans have varying levels of Toxoplasma infection, although most cases are asymptomatic. After the initial infection, humans will enter a phase of chronic infection. Toxoplasma gondii infection can cause significant symptoms and complications in those with weakened immune systems, such as those who have HIV/AIDS, are undergoing chemotherapy, have had a recent organ transplant, or are on immunosuppressant medications. It can affect the nervous system and eyes, causing headaches, seizures, confusion, fever, encephalitis, loss of coordination, and blurred vision. Symptoms usually take between 5 and 23 days to appear after infection. Some of the symptoms include: Swollen lymph glands, especially around the neck Muscle aches and pains Headache Fever Fatigue Generally feeling unwell Inflammation of the lungs Inflammation of the heart muscle Inflammation of the eye, for example, the retina (at the back of the eye) Is it treatable? Yes it is. There are treatments available for those with compromised immune systems, chorioretinitis, for pregnant women to help lessen the risk that the infection will be passed to the foetus, and for newborns with congenital toxoplasmosis. If I had it in the past, can I get infected again? Like most pathogens, once you have been infected and the primary infection becomes dormant, you have immunity against re-infection from an outside source if you remain healthy. However, if your immune system is weakened for some reason, a dormant infection may become reactivated.
