09.01.2022 Should masonry mortar mixes comply with the Australian Standards? Specifiers, Architects, Engineers, Contractors and Owners often turn a blind eye when it comes to masonry mortar mixes for building projects. The responsibility for the consistency and quality of the mortar mix on a building site is often left up to the bricklayer's labourer. A good bricklayer may notice a material change or a problem with the mix, but for many building sites there little regulation and monit...oring of mortars and it is easy for problems to go unnoticed. Mortar is the key to strength, durability and quality of masonry construction and therefore critically important to ensure that it complies with Specifications and the Australian Masonry Standards. Standards Australia AS3700 and AS4773 provides clear details of the appropriate Mortar Class and Mix Proportions for the different types and locations of masonry construction. Non compliance and poor practices can result in inferior quality buildings! Common masonry problems including efflorescence, low mortar bond strength, poor durability, substandard finish or appearance can often be attributed to incorrect or non compliant mortar mixing practices. Use of fire clays and high clay content "brickies" sands, overdosing with air entertainers and the use of outlawed substances such as detergents, sugars and soft drinks to try to improve mortar workability, are commonplace on Australian building sites.

03.01.2022 Since my last post, many of you have been asking about the Australian Masonry Standard and how they should be mixing mortar to comply. I have attached the relevant two tables from AS4773 here and hope it helps! Cheers
