24.01.2022 So much has happened in the last few weeks. Where do we start? Never in our wildest imagination would anyone think the entire world would be brought to a standstill by something so microscopic, something invisible ....... well, except maybe for Bill Gates who predicted this in 2015.... shouldve totally listened to him! (watch his TEDTalks). This virus has affected every aspect of our lives and while theres an uphill battle ahead of us, I know that with ever...y storm, comes a rainbow If you havent already noticed, weve been a little MIA lately as weve had to deal with the repercussions of an almost complete lockdown and making sure all of our patients are taken care of and fully informed of whats happening in the months ahead **NOTE: Were still seeing patients for urgent and emergency appointments** BUT, were not going anywhere!! While we cant physically provide routine dentistry during this time, you can bet we will do our best to make sure you and your family continue to have the best oral health, COVID or not We will continue to write blogs, film videos and posts tips on social media on a regular basis so that you will have all the information you need to keep your teeth and your kids teeth in tip-top shape. This means that when these restrictions are lifted, bats wont be flying out of that mouth #jokes But for reals, its strange being a dentist and not being able to do what I was trained to do. Im still coming to terms with the fact that I cant fix and prevent oral health problems and knowing what this will mean for our patients in the long run Yes, this is a setback. But, well take this opportunity to reflect, introspect and change for the better. Method Dental will be back again and we will be better than ever! Thank you all again for your amazing support, love, loyalty, patience and understanding. We truly have the best community #stayhome See more

24.01.2022 #tbt last Tuesday when Dr Anthony Lynham MP stopped by Method Dental to check in on us and say Hi! #socialdistancingpose We talked about all things dentistry, COVID and how the pandemic has affected and still is affecting small business around Australia As a small business owner, we could not have been more grateful for the financial support the government has lent us, including the Qld Small Business COVID-19 Adaptation Grant which has significantl...y helped us dig our way out of this mess and get back on our feet Knowing how hard it was the first time around, we just cant imagine what our Victorian friends must be going through now and were sending them all our love and well wishes during this incredibly difficult and stressful time Fun fact: Dr Lynham, whos also an oral maxillofacial surgeon (a man of many talents) used to be a lecturer at The University of Queensland and has taught Dr. Grant when he was a student at the School of Dentistry See more

22.01.2022 When to start brushing babys teeth? Healthy habits take time to establish. In a perfect world, we would all brush our teeth twice a day. But in reality, thats often not that the case So, if we can instil good oral hygiene habits in our lil ones before their first tooth erupts, the groundwork has been laid, and all they have to do is keep it up! One awesome way to get bub used to the idea of brushing their teeth is to wipe their gums with a sof...t cloth twice a day. This teaches them that cleaning your mouth regularly is a normal part of life and when it comes time to actually start brushing, they wont know any different As soon as bubs teeth start to come through, you can switch to using a soft childrens toothbrush, with no toothpaste until 18 months of age. Regardless of how many teeth they have, brushing is extremely important because decay causing bacteria can set up camp and wreak havoc from an early age Toothbrushing time can be a nightmare for some toddlers So, getting them into the habit of brushing their teeth well before they take their first steps can help save a lot of tears later down the track See more

21.01.2022 Contact sport is back in action! #restrictionslifted As of midday Friday 3rd July, Queenslanders are finally allowed to play contact sport again! This means mouthguard season has officially begun! If you or your child play a contact sport, a custom fitted mouthguard is non-negotiable. They protect you from serious sporting injuries like broken jaws, fractured, cracked or knocked out teeth, cuts to lip & tongue and even concussions ... A custom fitted mouthguard will let you talk & breathe normally and stay firmly in place, allowing you to focus entirely on the game! If stored & used properly, a custom fitted mouthguard should last several seasons! At Method Dental, we make all of ours onsite and you can even choose from a whole range of colours If you play contact sport, a custom fitted mouthguard is the best investment youll ever make. Think of it as insurance for your mouth See more

20.01.2022 .... turn yellow? Causes of teeth discolouration fall into 2 main categories: Extrinsic (external) & intrinsic (internal) stains. External stains affect the enamel, which is the outermost surface of our teeth. Lifestyle factors are the main contributors to external stains. Internal stains on the other hand affect the inner layer of the tooth, called the dentin. Yellowing of the dentin is commonly a result of age , genetics , illness, injuries, radiation/...chemotherapy, or taking certain medications. Because of this, intrinsic stains are harder to remove and can only be successfully treated with peroxide or laser As a rule of thumb, anything that stains your clothes will also stain our teeth. So coffee , tea, wine , berries , curry, dark sauces , beets are all at the top of the offending list. Acidic foods & drinksalso promote staining by eroding tooth enamel, making it easier for stain particles to latch on to the surface of your tooth. Some medicines like liquid iron supplements can also stain teeth. And if you didnt already know, smoking is a big time culprit. Last but not least, if you do not brush and get a professional clean/polish at the dentist regularly, this will contribute to a build-up of plaque, calculus & stain, resulting in teeth appearing yellow or brown. For more information on teeth whitening & treatment options, you can check out our blog by clicking the link below https://www.methoddental.com.au/teeth-whitening-everything/

19.01.2022 In times of darkness and uncertainty, this little ray of sunshine gave us something to smile about Just over 2 weeks ago, we visited Emily Foord Memorial Kindergarten for our annual oral health presentation to the kids As always, we talk about all things teeth related and at the end of the visit, we gave each kid a little goodie bag containing a Colgate Peppa Pig toothbrush, a tooth brushing chart a colouring in page and some boring stuff for mum/dad ...to read. Yesterday, little Pippa dropped in to say hi, introduced herself and gave us her completed colouring-in page with an adorable message to say thank you for visiting her at kindy I mean, what a beautiful and sweet gesture! Needless to say, this completely made our day and its times like these that make me think if we all just stick together and look out for one another, we will get through this Thank you Pippa for the wonderful surprise We cannot wait for you to visit Method Dental again

19.01.2022 Dont mind me with my Peppa pig magnifying glass Just trying to look for those hidden sugars!!! Most of the time, we try to do the right thing. We try to limit our sugar intake because we know excessive sugar consumption increases our risk of obesity, type II diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and tooth decay But unless the ingredients list on the back of the packet explicitly says SUGAR, we're probably not going to think twice, especially if... it's got other things like "fortified with vitamins" or "high in fibre" slapped in bold on the front of the packing. And because of "clever" marketing , Australians consume more added sugar than we really should (& more than we realise) To help you navigate the minefield of reading the nutrition information panel, here are some of the ways HIDDEN sugars can be written: Syrup is in the name i.e corn syrup, rice syrup, maple syrup, agave syrup, golden syrup The word ends in ose i.e fructose, sucrose, maltose, dextrose Sugar is in the name i.e raw sugar, cane sugar, brown sugar, coconut sugar Nectar is in the name i.e nectar, nectar, fruit nectar Juice concentrates, molasses, agave & are all added sugar So the next time you reach for the cereal box or a protein bar, take a look at the ingredients list and see if you spot any of the above. You'll be surprised to find how much added sugars are hidden in these 'healthy' foods! #sugarfree #addedsugar

18.01.2022 ANNOUNCEMENT - 25 March 2020 Due to the developing Covid-19 situation, we are writing to update you on the latest changes being made at Method Dental. First and foremost, your health and the health of our staff and community are always our number one priority.... We have been following updates from the government as well as the Australian Dental Association closely, and new recommendations have recently been made. After careful consideration, we have made the tough decision to defer all routine dental check ups and cleaning appointments as well as deferring treatment that is deemed to be not urgent as of today, Wednesday 25th March. Please know that this decision has not been made lightly and its been made in line with the latest recommendations from the Australian Dental Association. This move has been made to help reduce community contact needed to protect our patients, our staff and the rest of society. Not to worry, we will CONTINUE to provide URGENT AND EMERGENCY treatment at this time, but with the situation rapidly evolving, this may change. Our opening hours will change accordingly and we will be keeping you posted on this. We all have a role to play in reducing the spread and transmission of this virus and we take this role very seriously. Rest assured, that if you do require urgent or emergency dental treatment, that it remains safe to do so. As a dental practice, our infection control protocols are of the highest standards and this allows us to perform dentistry in a clean and safe environment. If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to email or call us. If you have checkup and clean appointments booked in with us in the next 4 weeks, we will be getting in touch with you to reschedule them. We will continue to update you with the latest developments as they come to light. And last but not least, we want to thank you again for your for overwhelming support and love during this trying time Without you, we would be no where and we will need your support more than ever when all emerge from this nightmare. Fighting this virus requires a collective effort. If we all do our part, we will come out of this stronger. Stay safe, look out for one another and well see you on the other side

18.01.2022 When visiting the dentist feels this good! While this is not Mr. S’s first rodeo at the dentist, today was Mr. H’s first ever dental visit! With a bit of help and encouragement from his older brother, his first visit was a success! Having an older sibling as a role model can help ease any uncertainties a little one might have, especially when it comes to new experiences. So the next time you’re booking in a checkup and clean visit for the kids, try getting the kid...s in at the same time It’s very much a case of monkey see, monkey do! A positive first experience sets the tone for future dental visits and at Method Dental, we want every kid to grow up never fearing the dentist. So sibling or no sibling, we do everything we can to make sure kids visits are always super fun and positive!

17.01.2022 .... bleed when I brush? Bleeding gums is a sight Im sure many of us have encountered. Sometimes it happens once and never again. Sometimes it lingers If your gums bleedfrequently when you brush or floss your teeth, then we strongly encourage you to visit the dentist sooner rather than later More often than not, the main cause of bleeding gums is gingivitis. This is when your gums are inflamed because of a build-up of plaque and calculus at the ...gumline. If you suffer from gingivitis, your gums may be irritated, red and swollen too The good news is, gingivitis can be easily treated if you practice good oral hygiene everyday i.e brush twice a day for 2 minutes and floss once a day AND visit your dentist regularly Left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, more commonly known as gum disease. Gum disease is a serious condition that can cause the bones, ligaments & gums to shrink and pull away from your teeth, resulting in tooth loss The good news is that if its caught early enough, gum disease can be treated and reversed Other causes of bleeding gums include: * Hormones during pregnancy * Wearing ill fitting dentures * Taking blood thinners * Haemophilia * Lack of Vitamin C * Lack of Vitamin K If you already practice good oral hygiene and your gums continue to bleed after brushing/flossing, then a visit to the dentist is definitely in order Your dentist will be able to examine your gums & teeth thoroughly, making sure everything is healthy as they should be For more information on gingivitis and gum disease, you can click on the links below: Gingivitis: https://www.methoddental.com.au/bleeding-gums-gingivitis-a/ Gum disease: https://www.methoddental.com.au/periodontitis-gum-disease-/

17.01.2022 Not even a global pandemic can stop us from educating the local kids about the importance of oral health! Adhering to social distancing rules and a COVIDSafe plan, today, we visited the preppies at St Columba's Primary to talk about all things healthy teeth, healthy foods and good oral hygiene habits We were so blown away by their knowledge about oral health, it gives us so much hope that the next generation of kids can grow up cavity free ... Thank you again St. Columba’s for having us and we’re already looking forward to our visit next year! See more

17.01.2022 Just finished a marathon video recording session so that you can have the best resources for your oral health during isolation! While we wont be able to see any of you awesome people in person for the foreseeable future for any preventative measures, well still be here digitally to give you the best information and motivation to help keep your mouth healthy! Watch out as we release the best videos weve ever made in the coming weeks ... #preventionisbetterthancure

17.01.2022 Happy birthday (for yesterday) Jasmine! And, thank you to your beautiful nephew and Mother-in-law for the oh-so-contemporary chalk art! #isobirthday Im going to tell you a little bit about Jasmine, though you probably know a bit about her already if youve ever spent any time in our reception area ... Jasmine is my (its Grant, the dentist here) wife. Weve been married now for just over 4 years and its been the best! Years before we started Method Dental, I just knew that shed be perfect for our reception area because I know the effect she has on people. She makes them smile, puts them at ease and lets them know theyre in a safe and welcoming place. Shes stuck with me even though building this dental practice has been really difficult. Its been the hardest thing weve done together and it has put us to the test! But it has also made us stronger and I know that she wouldnt have it any other way. She wouldnt have it any other way because she wants to make an impact in the world, wants to put herself to the test and shares a vision of bringing better health to our community! She loves her family, my family, her friends, her gym and her coffee! Even during these isolation times, her home gym and home coffee game is strong and all of these awesome people are there for her too, as shown by the wonderful surprises and messages she received yesterday. So thank you for sticking around and learning a bit more about my amazing wife and I apologise if it got a bit soppy

17.01.2022 4 ways to BOOST oral health at home, RIGHT NOW! *Including super detailed brushing and flossing how-to* Step 1. Buy an electric toothbrush and brush thoroughly. If you dont already have one, buy one! Theyre always on special at the ShaverShop. My favourites are the Oral-B Pro and Genius ranges. They have a 2 minute timer to keep you honest and pressure sensors that make sure you dont brush those gums too hard!... But whether you have a manual or electric toothbrush - the technique is the most important part. Follow the instructions in the video to up your brushing game tonight! Step 2. Start flossing! I know, I know... This one is hard. But if there was ever a time to pick up a new habit, its now, right? Theres instructions in the video to help you do a great job and to help make sure you dont hurt yourself. Dont be discouraged if there's some bleeding gumsinitially - theyll stop bleeding usually after a few days of flossing. Step 3. Limit snacking. Im not making this easy am I? Snacking has always been a problem for teeth, but now that a lot more people are working from home, its probably gotten worse We have more resources in the works to help you snack smarter, but in the mean time, theres a few good tips for you in the video Step 4. Drink lots of water. Staying hydrated is of course a good thing for overall health, but did you know its good for teeth too? Yep - it helps to make sure that you produce enough good quality saliva which in turn helps to protect and restore teeth! I recommend having a water bottle with you at all times so its right there, within your reach when you want it For more more great resources to help keep you and your family healthy during this time, click on the link below https://offers.methoddental.com.au/method-dental-covid-19-/

16.01.2022 What is SLS? Also known as sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate, its an acronym you may have heard of. You can see it on labels of soaps etc from time to time and often, most of us don't really give it a second thought SLS is chemical compound that's usually harmless and pretty much found in everything. Toothpaste, shampoo, face wash, mouth rinse, soaps ... you name it. It's basically responsible for the foam created in these products ... While most people tolerate SLS just fine, some of us may experience an irritation or develop an allergic reaction to it. If you have sensitivities or are prone to allergies, you may find that the SLS in toothpaste can cause/irritate ulcers or cracking at the corners of the mouth. It can also worsen dry skin/sensitive skin, causing more itching or flaking While these are rare side effects, if you've noticed any of these symptoms and haven't been able to pinpoint the cause of it, try switching out your current toothpaste (and or mouthwash) for one that is SLS free. The full ingredient list on the packaging should tell you if the product contains SLS or not For SLS free toothpastes, you can try Sensodyne Fresh Mint or OralB Pure Enamel Care or Multi-Protect There are heaps more options available on the market but just be careful to make sure that the toothpaste you choose contains fluoride! 15.01.2022 The first week of 2021 has come and gone In that time, dare I say we’ve accomplished a lot. We would’ve over ate our fair share of decadent Christmas leftovers , survived a 3 day lockdown (if you live in Brisbane) and potentially broken, if not one, most of our New Years resolutions #cestlavie Speaking of resolutions, do you set goals for the future? The start of January is typically a time many of us set our sights on making a few small or perh...aps big changes to our lives so we can grow to be a better version of ourselves. But if you’re anything like me, adopting a new habit like eating less sugar, exercising more or brushing twice a day can be extremely difficult if you go from 0 to 100 in the space of 24 hours So here’s a tip on how you can adopt a new habit and be consistent at keeping up with the changes so that eventually, your new habit seems like something you’ve always done and can’t live without Start small. And be realistic. Take for example flossing... hint hint Start by leaving the floss packet on top of your vanity so you see it every time you brush your teeth Then attempt to floss ONLY one tooth every night Once you’ve succeeded flossing one tooth for 7 consecutive nights, try to floss 2 teeth each night Once you get used to the routine of that, floss a few more teeth each night. And so on and so forth You will notice that after a couple of months, flossing all of your teeth every night will feel like you’ve done this all along and not like a chore Changing parts of your lifestyle can be difficult, especially if it’s something that requires more effort. But since when has anything good come easily? Ultimately, as with any change, if you keep on putting in the hard work and persisting, your efforts will pay off and in the long run, you’ll be healthier & happier because of it #settinggoals #NewYearNewMe

15.01.2022 Yes it is a thing. And yes, it is bad. When it comes to brushing your teeth, there is such thing as too much of a good thing. Brushing twice a day and for 2 minutes each time is essential in keeping your teeth and gums healthy but brushing too hard can actually lead to sensitive teeth and receding gums Also known as toothbrush abrasion, over brushing can scrub away the enamel as well as damage and push back the gums, exposing the sensitive root are...a Once the enamel and gum are damaged, there is no turning back. Unlike your skin, hair or nails, tooth structure and gums cannot grow back. As a result, weakened enamel and receding gums can lead to an increased risk of tooth decay and gum disease. So how hard is too hard? Well, first things first Always use a soft bristled tooth brush. But to know how much pressure to apply, hold the toothbrush handle with your thumb and index finger and gently brush your teeth & gums. The amount of pressure you can generate from that grip is how much should be applied. And if you’ve tried it, you’ll know it’s not much at all If however you’re like me and would prefer not to expand any mental energy thinking while you’re brushing your teeth, then an Oral-B electric toothbrush with a pressure sensor & 2 minute timer is going to be your best friend! It alerts you if/when you’re pressing too hard and the 2 minute timer will make sure you’re brushing for the right amount of time! Win-win See more

11.01.2022 Erosion in nature can often reveal breathtaking vistas Like the 12 Apostles. Magnificent rock stacks that rise up from the Southern Ocean along Victoria's stunning coastline. Erosion in the mouth (dental erosion) on the other hand............. not so much Dental erosion happens when surface layers of your teeth wear away because of repeated exposure to acids from the food/drinks you eat or from your stomach (vomiting, morning sickness or reflux). C...ommon food & drinks that are acidic include soft drinks , citrus fruits , fruit juices , energy drinks and wine As the enamel becomes thinner, your teeth can initially look smooth or shiny. In the advanced stages, it can expose the next layer of tooth structure, called the dentine. When this happens, your teeth can appear yellow and can become sensitive to hot, cold or sweet foods/drinks It's important that we address the root cause of dental erosion early on because once tooth structure is lost, it cannot be regained. And if it's severe enough, you'll need complex dental treatment to resolve the problem. Your dentist is the best person to help monitor any signs of tooth wear at your regular checkups and give you a heads up before things get worse Ps. 11.01.2022 No two dentists are the same Just like no two mechanics , hairdressers , lawyers or doctors are the same. Sure, dentists receive the same training & education during university But, how we approach dentistry in the real world is shaped by our personal and professional experiences, ambition, personality and our interests in a particular field.... Some dentists love treating kids Some don't. Some love complex procedures like root canals, oral surgery and implants. Some stay clear of them. Some take an interest in treating anxious patients and some will only place veneers all day every day If you're looking for a dentist for yourself or your family, make sure that dentist's philosophy aligns with yours. Your relationship with your dentist is very much a two way street and if it doesn't feel right or make sense, don't settle. Keep on looking for a dentist and a dental practice that is absolutely right for you because your health and your oral health are far too important See more

05.01.2022 There's more to it than meets the eye Oral health diseases like tooth decay and gum disease can often look or feel like nothing. But when you take a deeper dive, what you see with your eyes doesn't necessarily tell the whole story of what's truly going on In the case of tooth decay, what may look like a small, dark stain on the surface of your tooth can be an infection that's already spread deep into the nerve space You haven't really had any warni...ng signs and nothing seems out of the ordinary, but that's how tooth decay works It sneaks up on you and by the time you've realised, it can be too late. This is especially true for gum disease too This is one of the many reasons why we recommend visiting your dentist regularly. It's a great opportunity for your dentist to check in on your oral health, assess how things are going and very importantly, intervene as soon as something doesn't look right In the long run, being proactive gives you the best chance at having healthy teeth and gums for years to come See more

05.01.2022 Mr. M and Dr. Grant having a very important discussion about who has the cooler looking glasses This is Mr. Ms second visit and hes not even 2 years old! 6 months ago, he sat on mums lap and went for a ride on the chair. 04.01.2022 Were BACK!!!!! Well, technically, we never left. Since the start of April, weve been operating under Level 3 Restrictions which allow for only emergency dental treatment. However, as of Monday 27th of April, restrictions will return to Level 2, meaning that we will be able to attend to a wider range of essential dental needs!! This move has been made following the announcement by the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC), the Dental Board o...f Australia and the Australian Dental Association (ADA), to ease restrictions on dental treatment provision. While our scope of practice have slightly increased, there are still restrictions on what we can or cannot do. As such, we will be in contact with you if you have outstanding treatment that falls safely within the Level 2 guidelines. Oral health problems like tooth decay and gum disease do not hit pause for COVID-19, so the easing of these restrictions is definitely a welcome relief! If youd like to make an appointment, please call us and we will help wherever we can. During this time, our opening hours remain limited but this will change as the situation continues to improve. As always, our infection control standards remain at the highest level to ensure your are receiving the care you need in a safe and protected environment. We will also be extending appointment times (at no charge to you) to minimise contact and maintain social distancing practices between you and the next person. Last but not least, thank you so very much again for your continued support and love throughout this crazy time. Your messages/emails of encouragement have been so uplifting and were forever grateful to have the Method Dental community we do! We hope youve been keeping safe and well during this time and we look forward to seeing all your lovely faces again soon! See more

03.01.2022 #tbt that time Mr. E came in for his regular checkup with dad!! 6 months ago, at his first dental visit, we rode the "space" chair on dad's lap and played with the bright lights Today, we did all of that AND got Dr. Grant to count all his teeth, making sure they were healthy! Next time, Dr. Grant might even use his special "electric toothbrush" and clean some toothie pegs Bringing kids to the dentist for a checkup regularly from a young age is... a great way to get them used to the idea of dentistry. It also gives them the opportunity to get to know the dentist , be familiar with the environment, build a relationship with the team and learn about the importance of taking care of their oral health For some kids, it can take a few visits to get them to a point where they're confident and comfortable sitting in the chair by themselves. For others, they get stuck into it right away. But one thing is for certain. The earlier and more frequently kids visit the dentist, the better their relationship is with dentistry and this can only be a good thing for their oral health in the long run #startemyoung #2yearsold

03.01.2022 First dental visit Balloon animal Looking cute Being the best 1 year old ... Thanks for being the best little man Mr. G! You were an absolute champ! As a rule of thumb, we recommend babies visit the dentist for the first time within 6 months of their first tooth becoming visible or when they reach 12 months of age Whichever comes first. While their visits to dentist at this age may not result in a checkup and clean, its really more about getting them used to being in a dental surgery, getting to know and trust the dentist and understanding that having someone else caring for your mouth & oral health is a normal part of life. Children absorb so much more than we know and they will carry these positive experiences with them for life. This means that when theyre ready for a full checkup and clean (usually around 3 yrs of age), theyre prepared and fully aware of what goes on at the dentist #firstdentalvisit

02.01.2022 Stories have so much to offer! They inspire us, shape us, and bond us Stories give children a sense of wonder and can teach them so much about the world around them world This particular storybook called ‘Tiger’s Troublesome Tooth’ by is about a tiger cub who has a sore tooth and needs to see a dentist While he’s initially scared about going to see one, he goes on an imaginary adventure to cope with this new experience and by the end, he conqu...ers his fears and feels great that his tooth is healthy again! Stories about trips to the dentist, like this one can help kids visualise what happens at the dentist, which then takes away the mystery, fear and unknown surrounding dentistry. By breaking down these barriers in a safe and fun way, it can help kids overcome their anxieties about a new experience and make their visit to the dentist a success! Other storybooks about dental visits we love include ‘Peppa Pig: Dentist Trip’, ‘Dora Goes To The Dentist’ and ‘My First Trip To The Dentist’ by Eve Marleau and Michael Garton So grab a book or two and your little one will be on their way to learning all about what goes on at the dentist before their first dental visit! 02.01.2022 S O S In a previous post, we discussed dental first aid tips and what you should do if your child knocked out a baby tooth. But what if YOU knocked out a tooth? Children aren’t the only ones prone to injury. A simple trip walking up stairs or an overzealous tackle on the field can result in some serious injury to your face and teeth And when it comes to dental trauma, time is of the essence so knowing exactly what to do after an accident can... be make a big difference to the long term health of your teeth If an adult tooth has been knocked out, here’s what you should do: Remain calm Find the tooth and hold it by the crown only (the crown is the visible part of your tooth when you smile) If it’s dirty, rinse it in milk or tap water quickly. Do not scrub Place the tooth back in position inside the mouth - make sure it’s facing the right away & bite down gently onto soft cloth or tissue or you can even use your mouthguard (if you have one on hand) to keep it in place. If you can’t replant the tooth, store in milk or saliva and bring it to your dentist right away See your dentist ASAP, ideally within 30 minutes of the injury Even if the tooth isn’t knocked out but is loose, cracked/chipped/fractured or has moved out of position, do not delay seeing the dentist. The sooner you do it, the better the long term outcome for your teeth. The best way to prevent a dental injury is to wear a custom made mouthguard..... which clearly isn’t realistic in day to day life (unless you’re Dr. Grant ) But, if you or your child play contact sport , investing in a custom fitted mouthguard is the best insurance policy for your teeth. Having to deal with a lifetime of dental treatment and problems is just not worth the gamble. #dentalfirstaid See more

02.01.2022 Did you know you can actually STOP tooth decay?! There are 5 stages in the progression of tooth decay. Stage 1 - Demineralisation... It all starts with acid produced by plaque eroding the enamel. This weakens the enamel, causing brown and white spots to appear. It is ONLY at this stage that tooth decay can be STOPPED and REVERSED! Your dentist can apply a high strength fluoride varnish to remineralise the enamel and strengthen it Stage 2 - Enamel Decay A cavity has formed and tooth decay has effectively penetrated the outer most and hardest layer of the tooth, the enamel. Stage 3 - Dentine Decay At this stage, the infection has progressed into the 2nd layer of the tooth, called the dentine. The dentine is softer than the enamel, which means the infection can move a lot quicker. Stage 4 - Involvement of pulp Pulp involvement means the infection has spread into the area where the nerve lives. Stage 5 - Abscess Left untreated, the infection in the nerve space will find its way out of the tooth through the tip of the root. When this happens, a pus sac forms and if left to fester, it can spread into the surrounding area and into the bloodstream. This can be fatal This is one of the many reasons why we encourage all of our patients to visit the dentist regularly because without a comprehensive checkup, youll never know whats lurking in your mouth until one day, you wake up in the middle of the night with a pounding toothache ! To think all of this couldve been stopped and reversed if it was caught at Stage 1 For more information on the progression of tooth decay and what you can do to repair the damage at each stage, check out our blog NEXT WEEK! 01.01.2022 Coke vs Nutri-grain. Which has more sugar?? Hidden sugars are a massive problem for our modern diets. Obesity, Type II Diabetes and heart disease are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to health complications from eating and drinking too much sugar. And lets not forget the impact hidden sugars have on our teeth too!.. Those darn iso snacks! ... Growing up, I ate a lot of Nutri-grain because, well, theyre the breakfast of Champions . I also thought muesli bars were healthy because they had grains and fruits. And I definitely snacked on heaps of flavoured yoghurt because I thought they were great for my teeth But, when you delve deeper into it , you realise that its not all its cracked up to be. You see, Nutri-grain actually has MORE sugar in it than Coca-Cola I.e 26.7g/100g versus 10.6g/100ml! Who wouldve thought! What about muesli bars? Its pretty much held together by honey/agave/whatever you want to call it. It all boils down to sugar And yoghurts? Well, the natural, unflavoured ones are great. Just dont be fooled by some fat free varieties as some actually have added sugar to enhance the taste. And as you probably already know, sugars are turned into acid by those pesky germs inside your mouth And its those acids that rot your teeth! So, the next time you do your grocery shopping, take a look at the nutrition label. You might be surprised at what you find See more
