21.01.2022 So you have a rounded upper back or forward head position? Flat or overly curved lower back? Flat feet? High arches? These postural "abnormalities": 1. Can be completely unrelated to injury or pain 2. May have no adverse effects on your exercise or day to day function ... 3. May carry no risk for future problems 4. May need no correction A variety of different and varied postures are fine, there is no single, perfect posture! Credit: The Sports Physio Exercise is Medicine Australia

14.01.2022 Back pain for 2-6 weeks is normal 99% of the time its not "serious" Studies do NOT support posture or postural realignment to address back pain Stress, family, work and other lifestyle issues can contribute to back pain MRIs do NOT show the cause of your back pain

13.01.2022 How does kinesio-tape work? Does it work? Will it fix what ails you? What mysterious magic is this?

12.01.2022 Posture vs pain? Slouching (is in) Posture (is out!)... Its time to rethink old paradigms.

11.01.2022 Back pain is one of the most common causes of chronic pain, but is there a way to prevent it? Whats the best way to treat it and address the stigma around chronic pain? A great interview with Dr Williams from Hunter Medical Research Institute.

11.01.2022 Why are independence and empowerment so important when it comes to fitness and injury management? Are you overly dependent? Do you have a toolkit to empower you?

10.01.2022 More on Posture vs Pain: Association between leg length difference and back pain. Significant difference in lower back curve (lordosis) or leg length differenceand back pain Association between neck curvature and neck pain.... Significant difference in back curve (lordosis), pelvic tilt, leg length discrepancy, and the length of abdominal, hamstring, and iliopsoas muscles The list goes on....

10.01.2022 At least 30% of people who have *no* lower back Pain, have severe "herniated", "bulging" or "slipped" discs. Think about that for moment.

09.01.2022 Is there actual evidence to support workplace ergonomic assessments and modifications? This is worrying....but is it really surprising? I think its a load of rubbish, says Associate Professor James McAuley, a top back pain researcher. Peter OSullivan, professor of musculoskeletal physiotherapy at Curtin University, laughs when asked about ergonomics scientific support: This thing, its built like a house of cards.

08.01.2022 I had massive issues with this Allied Health Professionals advertising in a local, commercial gym. My markup in red (identifying details removed in black): A) Manual adjustment will very likely not help progress your workout (outside of placebo effect). b) Dont be concerned about your posture. Exercise Technique *is* important, of course. Posture however... not as much as we used to think. C) Do you really need somebody else to tell you how well youre functioning? ... D) Exercise and movement therapy are some of the few, evidence-based ways to prevent injuries. Manual adjustments have very few demonstrable effects beyond placebo. You are not broken. Be very cautious about the sales pitch.

08.01.2022 Choosing your mindset affects not just pain and injury management, but your overall fitness journey. Beware the self sabotage! Address your negative beliefs and assumptions.

08.01.2022 Lumbar disc bulges (or "slipped discs", "protrusions") can reabsorb with conservative treatment! Exercise and movement therapy

07.01.2022 Its 4 days pre-marathon, and youve got a significant muscular injury which has popped up. What to do?

06.01.2022 What is the differences between acute (short term) and chronic (long term) pain? How should we approach or think about them differently? This is contrasted with muscle soreness (DOMS) which is expected after new exercise or new intensities of exercise. I introduce some useful metaphors to think about pain, as well as way to self-measure acceptable levels of chronic pain during and after exercise.

03.01.2022 My guest speaker Elisabeth and I talk about her rehab journey following a stroke and brain surgery, and the emotional journey that followed - exercise physiology, developing resilience and mindset all as integral factors in her amazing recovery.

01.01.2022 Your body doesnt need to be realigned. Be very cautious about any Allied Health Professional who advocates such an approach! Theres a very large variety of acceptable postures, and very little correlation between posture and pain or posture and prediction of injury and illness!
