07.01.2022 THE SILVER LINING... There are plenty of things I loved about the lead up to and of course during the SEAROAD 2020 Australian Sprintcar Championship and I wante...d to share a few of them. * The racing last night in the B-Main and the Australian Championship A-Main was absolutely fantastic. To be honest, the title race was one of THE best races I have seen in Sprintcar racing, either here or in the US. * Congratulations to the track crew, the Thompson brothers and the people like the Redpaths who volunteered to either drive tractors, graders and even in some cases like Luke Redpath physically scoop out the water with buckets to get the surface into a truly memorable condition when it looked for all the world like the event would be lost. * Congratulations and thank you to the spectators who sat patiently and showed up in their droves to enjoy the spectacle. * Congratulations to Andrew Scheuerle for being a truly worthy Australian champion and for doing all he was asked and more to represent the #1 with pride and class and honour for the last 12 months. * Robbie Farrs class is always evident. A fierce competitor with a global conscience and understanding of how our sport needs to go. * Brooke Tatnells drive from the B-Main (fourth row) to an eventual 6th but be as high as fourth before he tagged the crashed Luke Oldfield and damaged the top wing almost beyond function was just pure GOLD. The guy still has as much heart as any driver Ive ever known. EVER. * Congratulations to the Metro Auto Spares Team owners Danny Kirkwood and Rachel Kirkwood for all of their tireless efforts to lift the game in Tasmania. The two cars driven by Jason Redpath and Adam Alexander looked cherry. Rachel does a power of work for Sprintcars Tasmania and Latrobe Speedway in general as well. I cant thank the Kirkwoods enough also for their friendship and a place to stay, a set of wheels and whatever I need whenever I come down here. * How lucky is Tasmania to have the Kelly Family? Chas Kelly is a saint. Fair dinkum. I love how much Owen and Kristian put their hearts and souls into the sport as well. Passion runs deep and runs hard through that familys core. huge onyas to Neville and Dylan Beveridge for their massive contribution to the race resurrection on the track. Those guys just made it happen. Full stop. * It was cool too see lifelong friends Chas and Garry Rush hanging out all weekend. * Cool also to see Sean Carren from Goldstar Transport over from the West. Hes been a huge part of the sport for as long as I can remember. * How much of a gentleman is Tim Moncrieff. His super cool original Wynns jacket was pretty sweet too. He was genuinely thrilled to be there last night and honoured to hand the current stars their medals. * What a pro Luke Oldfield is. Just lives to race and races to live. A gasser. Speaks well, races hard. Committed. * How bright is Tassie Sprintcar racings future? Goodyer, Frost, Bricknell, Dobson, House, Luttrell, Redpaths, Alexander, Johns, Penno, Bissett, Walkley, Gallagher. Standing Jock and Tate together during the A-Main was a powerful statement of just how fast this State has become. * How about Adrian Redpaths drive in the Pitt Racing 372ci entry to almost make the A-Main straight up. Reddy can still wield that thing. Awesome job. * The Bricknell family are Tasmania. I love their passion. * The new VIP room in turn four at Latrobe is tremendous. Wait until its 100% finished. * Was so good to see so many people in the pits during the pit walk at the start and then again after the racing. * One of the best coffees youll get in Devonport is called "Laneway". Take my word for it. Google it. Great little place typical of so many wonderful eateries. Check out "DC" Cafe in Ulverstone too, the food is fantastic as is the coffee. * Need glasses? Go to See Eyecare in Charles Street Launceston and see the Goodyer family. Such a cool shop and such great service. Brooke and her girls will sort you out, believe me I know. * How good to see Jamie Veal finally break through and score that elusive Australia #1. Talk about pressure from Kerry Madsen and then Marcus Dumesny who almost pick pocketed the win himself! The win for Veal was a huge achievement not only for Jamie but for his Mum and Dad Elaine and Ken and long serving crew chief Juddy - not to mention Triggy. * I love watching David Murcott get after it. On track and off it. What a character. What a throttle stomper. * How good to have Shaun Dobson back in the game again. Just a class act. Ive missed him, Andrew and Finchy. * Peter Doukas is a kid I really rate. His second heat on Friday night was superb. * Chris Johns is a wild critter. I love it. Kid runs that car HARD. * Nick Penno is a laid back rooster. I really enjoyed watching him race this weekend. * I also really enjoyed working with the BSA Speedway Australia TV/Speedshift TV team this weekend. Was great announcing with Morgan Melvin and also Stridey and Rourkie. Made my job fun to interact with those guys. It was cool to have two RF cameras with us so wherever we went we could show fans unique perspectives. * I like the way that Jack Lee goes about his business. Great looking car and rig and I love Jacks attitude. A fun guy who can wheel but also doesnt take himself too seriously. * Was great catching up with my mate Angryman (aka Jarrod Leonard) even if it was only randomly at times with fellow photography guru Gavin Skene who was down from Sydney for the weekend. * I love the Tasmanian countryside. Its so beautiful. I promise myself Ill visit here one day for holidays but for some reason I never do. I NEED TO. The pubs, the food, the coffee, the breweries, the beaches, the forests, the river, the people, the lifestyle. It IS Australias best secret. * The Redpath family make me smile. All of them. They ARE Tasmania. * It was cool grabbing a coffee with the Harper Family this morning. They have some big plans for next season despite the horrific one they are enduring right now. I think theyll be back with a vengeance. * The Metro Auto Spares boys would have fun at a funeral. Danny, Rachel, Johnny, Troy, Ben, Harley - what a fun bunch of people who love a cold one, love to BS and love to crack a joke. * I love seeing little families on the road with their babies growing up on the road and around the pits - watching the little Beatons, the Easthams, little Xavier Dobson, the little Redpaths...the future of our sport. * How long will it be before Steven Lines wins an Aussie title? Hes just always so damn good to watch. I loved talking to his proud Dad on Friday night about his sons amazing career to date. * I had a really great chat with Kerry Madsen after the A-Main in the pits on Saturday night. Its incredible to consider all of the achievements in the world of Sprintcar racing hes had. He speaks with such wisdom on so many aspects of our sport. He NEVER stands still at a race meeting. Id love to see how many steps he registers on a Fitbit on race night. Hes vigilant in every aspect of the event. * How fast is James McFadden. Every. Single. Time. * I love seeing Luch Monte at a race event. He makes me smile every time. So much passion for life and for success. * I wish there was a more modern approach to how Calcuttas are held. The concept is dated and tired but the people who bid and haggle make it bearable. Luch, the Krikke clan, Bill Barrows, ECP Racing, even Todd Wanless got in on the act. * How hard do the SCCA team work on the show and the racing at Aussie titles. I enjoyed hanging out with their team and working with them. They truly do have the passion for our sport and many of them take time away from their own jobs and tracks to be there. * Glen Sutherlands #20 car is consistently one of the best looking on track. Hes such a great guy from such a great family. * Who is the encyclopaedia of Australian Speedway? Particularly on two wheels? Kevin Titman. Hands down. The guy borders on Rain Man with his recall of Australian Speedway history. Just incredible knowledge. * I loved the battle between Luke Oldfield, Lachie McHugh, and Marcus Dumesny in particular last night. * The Dumesny Brothers. Polar opposites in many ways yet so similar. What a dynasty. * Shaun Dobson was bullet fast last night. Man he shook the bottle up. * The battle between Steven Lines and BT was pretty cool last night for many laps in the A-Main. They used each other up a bit in the process while they were trying to catch the leaders but it was wheel to wheel for many laps. * It was an amazing recovery for Charles Hunter to come back on Night Two after that huge wreck on Night One. The car looked immaculate too. * I really enjoyed hanging out with Tim, Anita and Brock Hutchins at their property this week and watching Brock rip some motocross. I never take moments like that for granted. * Last nights A-Main reminded me how privileged I am to announce this sport and be a part of it. The skill, daring, courage and commitment it takes to drive a Sprintcar is something I will forever admire. And Ill always respect and admire the crews, teams and families that support it all. I love our great big determined, dysfunctional, committed, loud, crazy, passionate Speedway family. God I love my job...
