25.01.2022 This is the Dutch-Belgian border between Limburg and Flanders. People on one side of this arbitrary line are nearly twice as likely to choose the (e-)bike for a journey. A pragmatic decision shaped not by culture or geography, but by decades of forward-thinking mobility policy.

23.01.2022 "The response to Covid-19, both globally and more so in the UK, has been the perfect example of data-driven decision-making. Transport data formed a key part of this intelligence, with the monitoring of the movement of people and goods, and its impact of lockdown, being core to the Governments daily briefings. As we gradually reopen from the lockdown, we must continue to build on these trends and ensure that data and technology play an even more important role in how we reimagine the mobility ecosystem." #Mobility #TransportPlanning #TransportData #TrafficData #TrafficManagement #Cycling #SustainableTransport

22.01.2022 Why do we need traffic data? Vehicle classification data are of considerable use to agencies involved in almost all aspects of transportation planning and engin...eering. The need for information on truck volumes and freight movements is growing with the recognition of role that freight mobility plays in the economy, and as highway engineers realize the importance of truck volume and operating characteristics on the geometric and structural design of roadways and bridges. 1. Pavement design 2. Pavement management 3. Scheduling the resurfacing, reconditioning, and reconstruction of highways 4. Prediction and planning for commodity flows and freight movements 5. Development of weight enforcement strategies 6. Vehicle crash record analysis 7. Environmental impact analysis 8. Analysis of alternative highway regulatory and investment policies. ***** Excerpt from lecture notes in Transportation Systems Engineering by Prof. Tom V. Matthew, more here: https://bit.ly/3ltItP2
22.01.2022 Well done to MetroCount's local council, the City of Cockburn (AKA Cockbenhagen with a silent 'ck') on pushing for safer shared paths in our area. With more people getting fitter and healthier by actively exploring their local area, Cockburn is starting to look more like bike-friendly cities in the Netherlands or the Danish city of Copenhagen, than ever, the City's TravelSmart Officer, Jillian Woolmer, said. The number of cyclists especially has increased, with more riders... using our shared path network. Its wonderful to see lots of first-time riders getting out and about, too. We're looking forward to partnering with the City of Cockburn in the near future to expand their network of cycle and scooter monitoring sites and improve safety further with detailed data. #Multimodal #SharePath #Cycling #Walking #SustainableTransport
22.01.2022 The City of Melbourne's new cycling lanes continue to #PopUp. 22.01.2022 Local authorities should embrace e-scooter rental schemes because the benefits of the new form of micromobility far outweigh the few negatives, says a report by Cenex, the UKs centre of excellence for local carbon and fuel cell technologies. 21.01.2022 Melbourne's brand new pop up bike lanes are now being monitored 24/7 with MetroCount pneumatic bike and scooter counters! Every single axle that passes the sensors will be time-stamped and classified with speed, direction and traffic gap information. Data is sent to the City of Melbourne via the Remote Access Link.... 20.01.2022 The City of Fremantle has been collecting and analysing traffic data for decades. Just recently, the true value of this historical information was highlighted when uploaded into ATLYST - MetroCount's new online analytics software. ATLYST has allowed the City to very quickly: - Measure the outcomes of traffic calming strategies. - Identify trends (such as a tripling of cyclists during COVID, rat-running or areas prone to speeding).... - Inform road maintenance using network-wide heavy vehicle data. - Compare driver and rider behaviour in different areas. - Assess road safety hazards and inform infrastructure upgrades. 19.01.2022 70% of Australian emissions are enabled by infrastructure, with transport and energy being the two most significant sectoral contributors. "The earliest stage of infrastructure projects is where the greatest amount of difference can happen in terms of sustainability. Therefore, as states are getting ready to inject billions of the dollars into the economy, sustainability should be at the forefront of the decisions being made." - Ainsley Simpson, CEO of Infrastructure Sustaina...bility Council of Australia. Key elements of incorporating sustainability into infrastructure projects include: Leveraging procurement to stimulate economies. Implementing policies that set sustainable, resilient and economically productive outcomes. Sourcing low emissions materials. Using design optimisation to reduce the volume of materials that are required. Investing in recycling innovations. Investing in human capital through training, development and cultural value immunity. Implementing a comprehensive sustainability rating system to capture the most accurate data. Considering public benefit as well as shovel readiness when assessing investments. 19.01.2022 Many are expecting cycling levels to decrease after COVID. Research shows however that public transport usage will remain low with people opting to ride, drive or stay at home to work instead. Bike commuting is tipped to increase by 55% in Melbourne, Australia once restrictions ease. It is vital that more cycling infrastructure is built and maintained globally to ensure safety and ease-of-travel for cyclists - which in turn will reduce emissions. #SustainableTransport #ActiveTravel #MulitoModal #Cycling

17.01.2022 The tourism sector was one of the hardest hit by COVID-19. But #CycleTourism is seeing a comeback with a focus on local/national markets. Canton du Valais in #Switzerland is using their 3 permanent bike monitoring sites along the Route du Rhone track to measure the impact of COVID-19 on cycling volumes and to inform campaigns to get people riding. Understanding who and how many cyclists use the #RouteduRhone allows us to better understand the habits of riders using the cycle...way. This enables us to make informed decisions about #WayFinding and #PlaceMaking signage, measure the modal shift away from motorised traffic and ensure #Cycle infrastructure is maintained. We make sure the cycle networks are consistent and attractive to entice riders. Weve made a substantial effort to promote active transportation as appealing for daily trips. 08.01.2022 Fantastic explanation from Mackay Regional Council as to why they conduct MetroCount traffic surveys on no-through roads: "I often get asked, why do I survey Culdesac and short No-Through Roads, so I thought Id list a few reasons: 1. Traffic Management No-Through Roads provide baseline statistical information for prevailing road conditions. This provides the basis of comparison when investigating speeding and hooning complaints, as all no through roads have very similar c...haracteristics and as such can be used analytically to identify trends and changes in driver behaviour throughout Councils entire road network. 2. Strategic Planning The similar characteristics of these roads and the data obtained is used to determine household trip generation rates, and again is a baseline comparison to determine growth rates. 3. Economic Performance - Traffic data from these roads can even be used to predict current economic trends and population growth. We have found there is a very good correlation between employment growth and traffic growth. These roads having no through function, effectively filter out the background noise in traffic, allowing relatively small but not statistically insignificant changes to be observed. As there are Culdesac and short No-Through Roads in all localities in the Council Area, these roads provide a good distribution of sample, as a working baseline to perform network analysis." - Wayne Amos, Traffic & Investigations Coordinator at Mackay Regional Council. #TrafficSurvey #TrafficData #StrategicPlanning #DataCollection
