25.01.2022 Meet Karen and Darcia, two of Kilcoy Hospital's 30 nurses! They help care for a small, tight-knit community and shared with us what they love about working in a rural hospital. "Working rurally has given me a chance to broaden my skills and knowledge. Because we don't have the same resources available at larger hospitals, we improvise and find new ways to treat patients as a team here. It can sometimes be challenging, but it's very rewarding," registered nurse Karen said. "As a CN, my work at Kilcoy is diversified, I describe myself as jack of all trades, master of none. Our roles out here can be so varied! Working in a rural setting also lets you form closer bonds with patients, colleagues and the wider community. We are the people they come to when they're not feeling their best!"

24.01.2022 Our Redcliffe Showgrounds Fever Clinic has been temporarily closed for the rest of today, and tomorrow Friday 11 Sept, due to poor weather . Our Redcliffe Hospital Fever Clinic remains open and ready to meet your testing needs.

23.01.2022 Can you guess what this condition might be? Heres a clue to help you out: Most ________ develop slowly over several years. Well share the answer next week, so check back in!

22.01.2022 Unsure if you need to wear a mask? Unlike some parts of the country, its not mandatory for everyone to wear a mask in public in Queensland. We are currently wearing them at our facilities though to keep both staff and patients extra safe! Face masks can be a useful measure to help control sustained community transmission. Sustained community transmission is when there are multiple cases of locally acquired COVID-19 where contact tracing and testing is unable to identify how the person was infected. If you live in the greater region of Brisbane, watch this video to see where a face mask might be suitable.

22.01.2022 Were smiling, we promise! Face masks alone will not protect you from COVID-19. It is also vital that other COVID safe practices are followed, including: Washing hands often and thoroughly Maintaining a social distancing... Covering coughs or sneezes Staying at home if unwell Getting tested if youre showing any signs of COVID-19. See more

21.01.2022 We want you to know that behind the mask theres always a smile #BehindTheMask #InThisTogether Great video by Childrens Health Queensland!

20.01.2022 Meet baby Myllena During one of Myllenas naps, mother Emmalea found her unresponsive and unwell. Taken in an ambulance to Caboolture Hospital, the doctors diagnosed the incident as a brief resolved unexplained event (BRUE). A BRUE is when an infant younger than one year stops breathing, has a change in muscle tone, turns pale or blue in colour, or is unresponsive. It can be a terrifying experience for the babys carer, just as it was for Emmalea. Little Myllena recovered overnight with the care of our team and is now a healthy, happy and adorable 5-month-old!

19.01.2022 Let's give a big welcome to one of our newest team members, Bayley! Bayley has joined #RBWH as a cardiac clinical measurement scientist where he will determine any underlying heart conditions in patients through non-invasive procedures. "I started here in February as a student and was kept on afterwards. I've only officially been working here for a few weeks and I'm really enjoying it," he said. "Uni has set me up for my role pretty well, but there are so many things you don...'t get to cover as a student. I'm learning so much every day from the team, it's new but it's been great!" Join us in wishing Bayley best of luck in his new role! #ShoutoutSaturday

19.01.2022 Jacque Antwis has helped thousands of babies through the donation of her breast milk, after losing her son Edison at just 10 days old. Baby Edison was born with a rare heart disease, which meant his life was brief, but the impact he made was profound. As her body continued to produce milk, she decided to donate it to Queensland Milk Bank to help other babies who could need it. She says the process has provided her with a sense of purpose and was a way to honour Edisons life and legacy. Read her story in full in todays Courier Mail QWeekend.

16.01.2022 Did you know that UV is high all-year-round in the Sunshine State? This means the sun is still powerful enough to damage your skin even in colder weather or on cloudy days. You can still get a visible sunburn in the winter, so make sure youre applying SPF 30+ sunscreen every day! #slipslopslapseekslide

15.01.2022 Looking for a way to get more physical activity into your day, but simply cant find the time? Why not try exercise snacking! Exercise snacking is all about adding small bite-sized chunks of exercise into your day that add up to your weekly recommended activity guidelines. #RBWH Physiotherapist Alexandra Boughey shares her top tips: Take the stairs instead of the lift. If you have an iPhone, the Health app tracks how many flights you climb each day! Walk more and at... a faster pace to get your heart rate up. If you catch public transport, try getting off one stop earlier. Strength snack by balancing on one leg while youre waiting for something to happen, like for your toast to pop out of the toaster. If you sit at a desk, try doing ten squats between meetings. Do you try to fit bite-sized exercises into your day? Tell us how in the comments!

15.01.2022 Its another #ThrowbackThursday! This month we found a photo of a Royal Womens Hospital (now RBWH) midwife and baby in the Special Care Nursery. Can you guess what year this photo was taken? A hint! In this year, Paul Keating was Australias Prime Minister.

15.01.2022 Dressed like a superhero because she is one! Anndrea is a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner at Redcliffe Hospital and she spends her days caring for our tiniest patients. Here she is pictured before the introduction of masks for staff, making her look even more like the superhero that she is. "My passion is not only for babies but for families too, and making sure theyre cared for properly on their journey," she says. "It can be so traumatic for families, they could never predic...t their baby would need neonatal care and can spend several months by their babys side in the nursery. "I absolutely love it, helping families get through this difficult time to take their baby home is incredibly rewarding." #ShoutOutSaturday

14.01.2022 What's on your Christmas wish list this year? 39 year old #TPCH patient Nicole is hoping to receive a heart transplant for 2021. He's hoping Santa will be able to deliver it soon and we do too!

14.01.2022 Each year #RUOK Day shines a spotlight on mental health. But how do you have a meaningful conversation? Our Chief Wellbeing Officer Bruce Sullivan has some tips for asking R U OK?: Stop and pay attention, the differences in someones behaviour will tell you if something might be wrong. Make time for a meaningful conversation, ask them over lunch or a walk rather than before heading into a meeting. Listen carefully and quietly. Youre there to understand, not to fix ev...erything. Encourage action! Think of ways you can support them, like suggesting resources or scheduling in another chat. Be there all year round, not just today. Link to full blog in comments.

13.01.2022 A study from Jamieson Trauma Institute this year showed road trauma hospitalisations had increased in 2020 from the previous year, and were predicted to continue increasing over the Christmas period. Dr Sean Rothwell is the Director of Emergency Medicine at #RBWH's emergency department and he knows the importance of being vigilant on the roads. "Unfortunately, we see a lot of road trauma here in the ED over the holidays," he said.... "It's important to always be alert and aware when driving, whether it be a 5 hour drive or a 5 minute trip to the shops. You never know what can happen, so don't take risks with speeding or drink driving, it's just not worth it." Stay safe on the roads and look out for one another.

"It can be pretty confronting at times, especially when I first started, but I really love my job." Where would we be without people like Josie? #ShoutoutSaturday

09.01.2022 #TPCH ED Specialist Faye Jordan is a friendly face you do not want to see this Christmas! Sadly, Faye sees too many little ones on Christmas Day who have ingested magnets and button batteries. These high-powered magnets or batteries are commonly found in kids toys, games and novelty goods, many of which we'd find wrapped up under the tree! Unfortunately, magnet and button battery ingestion can lead to internal injuries and even death. Prevention remains the number #1 focus this Christmas, so please throw away any toys containing these where the batteries or magnets are not securely out of reach, and remind family members to be vigilant with little children around. Together, we can make sure Christmas is safe for everyone!

Its hard to put into words what its meant to have a space like this. Its given me somewhere to feel relaxed away from the hospital environment and a place to hang out with my friends when they visit.

08.01.2022 The blood transfusion service at Kilcoy Hospital started out small, but thanks to RN Maggie's determination to streamline the process for patients, it's now bigger and better than ever! "The service needed a bit more attention than what it was getting, so I just decided to start scheduling the service in advance, making sure product was ordered and that couriers were organised," she said. "We only have a couple of clients a week but those who need regular infusions need an or...ganised and accessible service. Blood products really do affect the quality of life for patients so it's important we do this properly. "I really wanted to offer a great service and I love when things run smoothly and easily, especially for our patients. Now it's all developed and everything flows a lot better!"

07.01.2022 Today we put the spotlight on genetic counselling But do you know what is involved? We sat down with Senior Genetic Counsellor Lyndsay to find out exactly what her role is all about. "A lot of what I do is breaking down the complex medical and genetic information so that it means something to the individual sitting in front of me," she said. "There's a lot of general information about genetic diseases and conditions out there, but no one person is the same, and that's wher...e I come in. "It's my job to make sure someone facing a possible diagnosis, due to their family history, or who has been diagnosed, understand what this means for them and their family specifically. "It's an extremely rewarding role. With a history working in research, it was great change to get closer to the coal face and make a direct impact to patients sitting right in front me, there's nothing quite as humbling as that," she said.

04.01.2022 Opened in 1898, The Lady Lamington building at Herston was home to more than 9,000 young nurses in training during its lifetime. One of these nurses, Cluny, moved into the building at aged 17 and shared it with 600 other women! Even though living there meant you had to abide by many rules and regulations, Cluny says that the four years she spent there were some of the best years of her life. Did you pick up a copy of the Sunday Mail yesterday? Flick to pg 65 to find out what life was like for Brisbane's young nurses as well as an update on its restoration which will see the next generation of healthcare workers once again call Lady Lamington home.

04.01.2022 Its been a busy year for Janice! Janice is a Clinical Nurse Consultant in the Infection Management Service at #TPCH and shes here to set the record straight about a common influenza myth - "the flu vaccine gives you the virus." "You cannot get the flu from the vaccine. Its an inactivated vaccine, meaning its not putting the live virus into you, its putting in a snip of the genetic material of the virus so your body can produce antibodies to fight against it," she says.... "It can take 14 days for your body to make those antibodies, so if exposed to the flu in that time after your vaccine you can still contract it. No vaccine is 100% effective. If you do catch the flu after having your vaccination, youll have a much more mild experience and are likely to recover faster. "There are some vaccines that are live and put the virus into you, measles is one of them. But you cannot get the flu by simply getting the vaccine," she said. #ShoutoutSaturday

03.01.2022 Dr Anthony Holley, Commander in the Royal Australian Navy and ICU Senior Staff Specialist at #RBWH reflects on the importance of Remembrance Day and what it means to him. "Remembrance Day is a wonderful opportunity to recall the 11th hour of the 11th day when the guns fell silent at the end of the First World War. You can't help but reflect on all of the men and women who left their families and their country for many years in the interest of keeping the world safer," he sai...d. "It's an honour and a privilege to serve. We stand on the shoulders of great people and great traditions. It's very sobering to think about the sacrifice of those before us who gave up so much to deliver healthcare on the other side of the world facing challenging conditions. "The Australian Defence Force has an incredible legacy, being part of that innately makes anyone's heart beat faster and feel proud, it's very sobering and it means a lot to be part of it."
